Marshall full time ruck. Hayes and Heath as 80% forwards and splitting the chop outs.

Heath able to bring the ball to ground with his 205cm frame
It's possibility, he had 15, 3 goals, and 25 hitouts in the 2nds today.

Mids playing well across the board ✅
Max leading Coleman ✅
Small forwards lost the selfishness ✅
Defensive unit extremely miserly ✅
Good points of difference across the whole ground ✅
Hilly and NWM running and kicking teams off their feet ✅
Rucks able to battle even if undersized/under injury cloud/missing ✅
George still short and bald ✅

Liking the look of things atm 😎
**** off

I'm really optimistic about NWM. Since Gresh, Max he's probably the 3rd draftee that's got me hooked since the first game he played. That kicking ability reminds me of Dal, Lenny a lot. He makes those risky kicks look like nothing to him, he just laces them out. I also think he will take a mark of the year soon.

The big lad was pretty handy as a forward threat today from the little I saw of the Sandy game.

Good win, we weren't at our best today but we still ground out a win against a tough opponent.

We are building something good, the best I've seen us play since the 2009 and 2010 era, we are finals bound and should be aiming at top 4 now.

Marshall and Hayes were awesome today, they almost broke even in ruck taps with Witts and beat him around the ground and had a big influence.

Hayes has definitely earned his spot for next week and it will be hard to drop him when Paddy comes back, he is such a great competitor.

Higgins was awesome too, our best small forward since Milney, him and King are our best forward duo since the G Train and Milney, a dynamic duo.

With Billings, Clark and Jones returning it's going to get hot for spots,

Windhager was a bit quiet today so he will probably lose his spot, like Owens he needs to go back to the VFL and knock down the door.

NWM didn't get many touches either but the touches he gets are so good I would keep him in the team, he makes good things happen.

Dominated score from stoppage and clearance numbers ..maybe just maybe, we over analysed the ruck dilemma in the preview thread :D

Not I

I called for Hayes and he did his job, 3 centre clearances and 11 contested possessions!

All the little taps and blocks to advantage are very sweet too.

B Long

Career-high 20 disposals
85% DE
Just 1 turnover
Game-high 9 intercept possessions

Playing with great energy, maturity and confidence this year. 💪
He and DMac are both great examples of players who have learned to play within their skill set, and are succeeding through simplicity.

Not everybody needs to be a highlight reel superstar.

492 metres gained from 15 touches is a crazy stat

A quarter of the team has ice strapped to their leg after a game every week.
He was listed as “out” on the afl website stats page with a few minutes to go in the game (still there now). So he was essentially subbed out injured, but we didn’t bother to substitute Byrnes in.

Did you see the game live? How was he to the eye?
I got to watch a fair bit. He's very athletic for his size, mobile, he competes hard. He's got a good tap (I think hes been around Patty a lot). This was his best game, without Campbell he really shined much like RoMa without Ryder.

I would say he's still very skinny in terms of Ruckman size, he needs more muscle. Is he AFL body ready, I would think not but I would not be surprised to see him debut soon if he keeps playing this way.

We got to remember this was his first proper preseason, but hes showing great signs.

Crouch 9 clearances, 7 tackles, 9 score involvements and went at 88%. Having a bloody excellent start to the year. Midfield functioning well. Add in Jones next week or the following week and it's looking seriously strong. Not something I thought we would be saying about this midfield at any stage this year.

Pretty good sign that we can kick 22 goals and add in someone who can kick 5 goals the next week. Higgins is shaping to be an elite small forward. Such a dangerous forwardline.

Defensive system is looking really system. Suns look really dangerous when they get into the corridor but we blocked it off well most of the day. It's interesting that Buckley talked about how he thought we didn't have any specialist intercept defenders in pre season. I had the same concern. It's a great sign that the system doesn't seem to prioritise one or two interceptors, but rather seems to be a widespread approach that is completely team first. Wilkie, Lienert, Battle, Paton, Howard etc all take their one or two a day but more importantly, the defence as a whole seems difficult to pass.

Glad we played to our strengths and brought Hayes in rather than bringing in Campbell to negate Witts. Witts had no influence today. Suns were smashed in clearances and our two big boys were far superior in the air to Witts/Chol. Hayes doesn't get many hit outs, but he competes bloody hard. Plenty of ruck contests where Witts probably gets a hand on the tap, but it's that pressured by Hayes that there is no benefit for Witts.

A solid win overall. We were pretty sloppy at times and didn't always handle the extra pressure from the Suns compared to Richmond/Hawthorn, but we worked through it pretty well.

Happy for Lade getting a win. Good on him.
