Adelaide v Brisbane
Sunday 29 September, 2:35pm Adelaide time, 3:05pm Brisbane time
Brighton Homes Arena

Brisbane come into this game off their 2 games in a round last week - beating the Bulldogs at home and West Coast in Perth, with a week where they'll be completely overshadowed by their men's side, something about a Grand Final or something.

We got the job done against Essendon and sit top of the ladder 4-0.

Can we take advantage of this and jump them, or will Brisbane continue their dominance over us?

Brighton Home Arena - will it be affected by the Lions requiring a venue for GF afterparty/family day?

I don't think so. I suspect any after party will be at Brunswick St, and they could potentially use the Gabba for any Brisbane based festivities.

Or the AFLW match could be incorporated into the after party festivities. Sydney are somewhat doing this, with a live site at Henson Park on GF day incorporating West Coast's AFLW training session (they're playing GWS at Henson on Sunday)

Playing Brisbane in Queensland… with Queensland-based umpires…

Friendly reminder…

Free Kick count last 3 times Adelaide has played Brisbane in Queensland;

Season 8, Rd 8 2023; Brisbane: 16 Adelaide: 6

Season 7, Prelim Final 2022; Brisbane: 18 Adelaide: 9

Season 7, Rd 8 2022; Brisbane: 18 Adelaide: 8.

If you see a certain dark woolly haired umpire you just know it’s going to be a tough day.

Springfield is so far out of the city surely they'd have their main stuff right near the Gabba

So they're going to send umpire 34 from yesterday up to the game :D

As presumed on the day it’s a busted collarbone for Brooke Smith so that will be her season done even though they haven’t exactly said that, you’d think that could be it for her time on the list too unless they increase list sizes at the end of the year, but who knows that’s more outside view and they do seem to rate her somewhat internally.

Allen & Henry still out.

Squad named; Ballard, Varnhagen, Boileau and Kustermann all added to the squad, Smith only confirmed out.

Charlton, Boyle-Carr, Munyard and Waterhouse named on the bench, ideally would like to see Munyard and Waterhouse both out as well with Ballard, Boileau and Kustermann being the ones coming in🤞

Still no Mueller even on the extended interchange bench. I wish someone in the media would ask a question about it.

If we're going by the standard set in previous weeks, the first five names listed on the bench will be the ones who play. That would mean Varnhagen and Boileau in, Munyard and Smith out, with the emergencies being Ballard, Munyard and Kustermann.

Yep, but you’ll never get anything answered about selection with only one regular in-house reporter in attendance and a random Advertiser intern rocking up every few weeks at Clarke’s press conferences.

Unless it is an internal matter involving some sort of standards or like I’ve suggested Clarke more than likely just doesn’t think she has any versatility so doesn’t want her in the team (yet selecting Waterhouse seems to make him quite hypercritical then). It literally makes no sense given how it’s compromising a player like Goodwin’s game.

EDIT: stumbled across this, maybe it could be health related if she has suffered a flare up?

Without scratch match reports unsure to know but maybe she’s been judged to be too limited to perform in games at AFLW level so they are heavily managing her game time in lesser intensity matches.

Shes been very open about her struggles, could be the case.

Shes a fantastic human is Kizza

Sucks if that's the case. Although you'd think she would be dropped for personal reasons, rather than "omitted" and then not seen since.

I refuse to accept there is any way she has been dropped on merit (regardless of any lack of flexibility) considering some of the other players we're listing.
Yeah it's strange.

Good footy smarts, strong over the ball, good kick. She's probably a little bit slow if anything and we seem to be playing more up tempo.... but that's not enough to warrant her being out of the side

Adelaide have broken from their usual extended bench method and didn't leave out the last three mentioned this week. Instead it's:

In: Ballard, Kustermann
Out: Smith, Waterhouse

Two out of the three changes Firewalker wanted anyway! Just Boileau for Munyard missing.

The starting 16 is identical to last week, except Boyle-Carr swapped onto the bench for Newman.

Emergencies end up being Boileau, Varnhagen and Waterhouse.

I'm glad we're not carrying Varnhagen or Waterhouse into this match. Brisbane in Brisbane is a seriously tough match and we need players who are either in form or could potentially get into form.

Suppose 2/3 ain’t bad… Clarke hopefully has realised now Waterhouse makes the forward line worse not better, Munyard staying in after her season so far is 🤮 though, also it’s almost become tradition that the club doesn’t trust new draftees, very annoying because Boileau desperately needed games pumped into her - she should’ve never been dropped & now she can’t get back in.

Also like I mentioned after the Hawks game other than Gould they’re again going in with nearly no aerial presence at all inside 50 which is a dangerous play against someone like Brisbane’s defence who love to peel off and intercept.

I haven't thought Munyard has been that awful so far. She probably offers slightly more than Boileau right now, but she's a veteran compared to a two-gamer fresh into the system. Much more upside with Boileau.

I think we're going to rely on winning the ball in defence and in the contest enough to restrict Brisbane's score, rather than piling on goals ourselves.

I wonder how much the men’s win will distract Brisbane’s AFLW side?
Yes, the Brisbane girls might be all fired up and beat the Crows convincingly. But they could also be distracted, thinking ahead of themselves and seeing themselves getting a Premiership cup, alongside their male counterparts. I hope it’s the latter!
