Consistently seen the following issues with the Pies over the past few seasons and then in today’s game:
- No big bodied stand-your-ground defenders like Steven May. Moore and Howe are decent aerially if they get a clear run at the ball but they are simply not as effective in a contested situation as a McGovern or Harris Andrews. They also go to ground too easily against big bodied forward and give away positional advantage. Quaynor is agile and good. Bruzzy is a bull. Madgen looses too many contests for mine.
- this one is obvious but no power forwards at all. Every premiership team of the past few years has had at least one or two ace forwards (Lynch/Riewoldt, Darling/Kennedy, Brown/Fritsch), or even if they haven’t had them, they have had their 3-4 main forwards kick 25-30+ goals a season. We’ve only had Checkers and he’s a hard worker but not exactly a power forward. The last one we had was Cloke and that was LONG ago
- The ability to stick and break tackles. This one gives me the absolute shits but we just seem like featherweights in front of the other sides in this department
I reckon the midfield is OK, it’s issues in both key parts of the ground. Unfortunately no matter what sort of game plan (chaos etc.) we adopt, without quality defence and offence I just don’t see us winning against the good teams.
