List Mgmt. Saints father and son

I can tell you that young Rice turned his ankle badly the other week and the Saints were all over him making sure that he saw the right doctors/specialist. They are very keen on the boy.

However, I do recall his father at the same age was also killing them at senior level in the country when he turned his ankle badly. Hawthorn were all over him making sure that he saw the right doctors/specialist, but they didn't take him the next year and he went to Geelong instead..........?
Found this on the Carlton board.

Saints would be desperate to get a Father/Son on board, despite that "injury" if Rice is any good and we want him and he picks us (think he must pick?) i'd expect us to take him.

With the new rules for electing to take a F/S pick, wont it be good or bad depending on the teams ladder position?

If we have picks 3, 21, 39 like last year & they (the AFL) rate him as a first round pick, would that mean we'd have to nominate to take him at pick 3? Because that would seriously suck if he was to be rated in the pick 6-15 bracket

Alternatively, if we finish quite high on the ladder & we have picks 16, 34 etc with the kid rated top 5 in the draft, its a bonus to nominate to take him at pick 16

I'm only bringing it up because with Luke McDonald last year for North. I highly doubt they would have elected to take him if they had a top 3 pick, evenly though he was highly rated. They ended up having to use their pick 7, which I don't think they really wanted to because he seemed to be rated somewhere 'in between' 1st & 2nd round, & they weren't allowed to use their 2nd round pick for him. He wouldn't have made it through to their 2nd round pick either which sucked big time!

We'd have to offer our 1st pick only if a team offers a round higher than ours.

So, if we offer round 2 pick of 21, then someone like Brisbane/Melbourne /GWS can force us to offer pick 4 by offering pick 1/2/3. Highly unlikely to happen with Rice.

Also McDonald was rated as a top 5 pick with the best footskills in the draft, hence North got a deal with them paying just pick 8!!

That's what I mean though. If North had pick 1, 2 or 3, and say Richmond (pick 12) had announced they want McDonald with their 1st round pick, that would have forced North to use that pick 1,2 or 3, potentially missing out on a better player or sacrificing the F/S pre-selection altogether

Just seems like another AFL rule change that could either work beautifully for or seriously screw teams over IMO

It's simple, we welcome the kids to the club early, make them feel right at home. Come draft time, they nominate, we bid. If we're successful, you beauty. If another club outbids us, we let the kid go, let him develop for a year, then spend the final year of the usually two year contract whispering in his ear to come home.

That's not correct.

North would be forced to use their NEXT pick after the bid, not their pick in the same round. If Richmond at pick 12 were the only club to nominate, North would only have to use their next pick after that (presumably 19, 20 or 21 in your above example).

The rule is brilliant. It still provides an avenue for the romantic side of the father-son rule. But it also promotes equality. The club selecting the kid can still get a bargain (based on the fact another club has bid earlier). But not so long ago North would have used pick 78 or something on Mcdonald instead of 8 (given others before North were happy to bid for him).

No what happens is if a clubs nominates him with a pick, say richmond with pick 12, then north can use there next pick to take him which would be there second round. if we had pick 4 a club could only force us to use that on rice if someone with pick 1 2 or 3.

Yeah the current rule is MUCH fairer then what Geelong got away with by filling their ranks with some of the best players in the competition with garbage picks.

It was never right that they had 100% dibs on someone like Abblet or Hawkins whilst giving up almost nothing for them.

I can give them a month or so to settle in a bit but by month two I want those kids running laps!

That's not how it works.
If you have pick 3, only teams with pick 1&2 can force you to use it. It doesn't matter what the other teams behind you do, unless they bid for the player which would force you to use your next pick (pick 20-odd)

Also, McDonald was definitely not rated between round 1 - round 2. West coast would've taken him with pick 6.

Yes, after 3 others & now yourself have explained, I understand it correctly now :thumbsu:

I couldn't believe the gall of Geelong whinging that one first rounder was not enough for Ablett. Yes, amazing player, but you picked him up for free. Give me a spell.

I love the F/S rule, but it's kind of like inheritance - the better your team was in the past, the better the F/S picks you're likely to get now. So, we've been killed by how bad we were between the early 70s and late 80s. It's only now that the first of our "golden generations" is starting to produce kids of draft-able age.

So, can somebody explain for me how this whole Father Son rule works now?
If a player wants to, they can nominate as a father-son for any club where their father's played 100+ games. They don't have to.

Prior to trade time beginning, there's a bidding process. Clubs bid whatever pick, for example a club might really like a prospect and bid their first round pick, say 6. The nominated club has the option to match that bid with their next available pick, be it pick 7 or 23. If they match the bid (and every club has so far), they get the player for that pick. If they don't, the player goes to the bidding club.

It's worth remembering this is done before any trades are done and any priority or compensation picks do not count.
