No, we need a balanced mix of young & experienced.
For example, playing Collard & Hastie early last year, did it prove to be of value? I'd say not.
And probably why Travaglia will be held back.
And why a player like Phillipou had to downgrade to the vfl to improve & actually regain confidence.
Trav is emerg this week
Not exactly being held back

Anyone know what Hastie did to A) get subbed after 50 mins and B) get dropped for the following week?

All impressions were he was one of our shining lights in pre-season… now seemingly exited from the team after 50 mins of footy.
You'd have to be in the inner sanctum to know. I'm guessing he went away from one of the team's important key rules / non negotiables, whatever they are.

We need one no doubt
But not our biggest issue
We could have an elite small forward and with our midfield and overall teams execution of skills under pressure,IQ and footy nous it won't move the needle.
I think you are completely overlooking how transformative elite small forwards are in the modern game.

Hawthorn is a prime example of having multiple very good small forwards and the impact they have around the ground and closer to goal outside of the centre bounce.

If… Collard can start to deliver on his potential it’s a big win for us and one we need.

It also gives us Hall Henry Higgins and Collard who are all goal threats and all can rotate between genuine smalls and in time as high half forwards.

The key thing with playing with 4 or 5 small fwds is how you move the ball and their ability to get up and down the ground. Our ball movement would have to improve dramatically to make it feasible. Maybe the back end of last year showed we’re capable. But certainly not on last weeks form

Last week Jones had 11 disposals (0 contested) at 63% efficiency from 73% TOG. I'm certain that Boxshall would offer more than that.

Byrnes was more prominent but just wastes the footy. He had a hand in lots of Adelaide scores and bungled attempts at our own opportunities. He's the same player that he's always been and that player just isn't AFL standard.
Boxshall had a minor injury the week after the practice game so missed a bunch of training then didn't play at Sandy last week since he travelled with the group. Debuting after an interrupted 3 weeks would not be setting him up for success.

I get we are all impatient to see him after he looked great during those practice games but we need to do what's best for him as a player and sometimes that means waiting a few weeks.

Absolutely zero point in bringing Collard in just to make him sub. How is he supposed to start to get comfortable and raise himself to the level on 20 minutes of football?

Also small forwards as subs don't make any sense, they need lots of bites at the apple over the course of a whole game to have an impact. An explosive runner who can make an instant impact makes more sense like Jones.

Great to see Collard in, please learn from last year and don't give him one quarter and then drop him.

Windhager doesn't have the aerobic capacity to play on Smith
He will run rings around him.
There's is only one player on our list that can outwork Smith and that's Wilson
Windy is an excellent runner. He has both the running capacity and the concentration to go with someone like Smith.

Marshall looked very proppy at full forward last week and I didn’t think Harry was that bad.

Marshall must have improved in leaps and bounds over the week. Hope so because our second ruck option is normally Owens - who himself can’t be [emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]% Keeler hasn’t played ruck at Sandy since year and I doubt they see him as a ruck backup.

Yuck yuck and yucker

We need to get some back up talls in because there is a massive hole. Liam McMahon, Denver Grainger-Barass anyone. Just get some one temporarily. No one expected much from Wilkie or Marshall.

Where is our selection integrity???

Correct me if Im wrong, but from training and VFL reports Collard has hardly deserved a call up to the AFL side? Most pundits have questioned as to whether he will even make it. I cant find a legitimate reason justifying Collard's selection over others, how does he go from being rated so poorly to getting a game?

More examples of how seriously amiss the club selections are at present -

  • Playing under done players last week Marshall, Clark and Jones back fired.
  • Shoenmaker reportedly continued to struggle with the defensive side of his game yet gets a game, only to be dropped the following week?
  • Hastie has a red hot crack when a lot of the senior players are going at 70% gets the chop? The kid is good over head, a good kick yet for some ridiculous reason he is the fall guy for teams apathetic efforts. Lyon preaches he is creating an environment to allow kids to grow while make mistakes and be ok with it, but does exactly the opposite with Angus.
  • Hill didnt look like he wanted to be out there against the Crows, in short his efforts were piss weak! Yet they sub off a kid who was having a crack? Hypocrisy at its worst when Lyon was critical of the teams effort.
  • Steele is meant to be a club leader and his efforts were only marginally better than Hill's?
  • Blind Freddy could see we needed to move Caminiti to defence but the club thought better?
  • Boxshall sets the world on fire in practice games, yet when others are struggling he is over looked??
  • Stocker was having a great preseason yet gets over looked in our first game?

How can the coaches expect player accountability when they are not adhering to the same expectations in selection? The club (Lyon) lacks consistency and integrity in its selection and smacks of a group under pressure making poor decisions in my view. Lyon is being shown to be a complete hyercrit preaching one thing in his media outings and doing the exact opposite at selection.

The backline looked like it had holes all over it. Hastie played okay but the defensive unit failed. It looks like they are looking for experienced defenders that stop scores first. Hastie is more of an attacking defender.

I think it's purely that he's the last small forward standing.

This is just wrong.

Windy would be a better runner than almost everyone on Geelong's list, bar a few.

He's top 3–4 at our club in time trials, and we're the best club in the league for distance covered at speed according to all the GPS stats from last year.

In a pure foot race I would back Windy over Smith every day.

Don't know how Marshall could possibly play ruck this week, he looked very proppy and underdone last week, and I wouldn't expect Owens to be doing much ruck work as I don't reckon he would be totally over his injury. Could both be last-minute outs. I bet Boyd will be back in.

Keeler will be the 2nd ruck.

Owens is good to go. Was flying in multiple contests in match sim yesterday with zero issues.
