Autopsy Saints roll the Cats.

We are in a different place now, we've built up via the draft and are starting to get rewards. This is the model we should have followed the first time. It pushed the time line out. Adelaide were in a GF in 2016 and look closer than us again. North had their last finals the same year. Adelaide didn't gut as hard.

We are coming off a 14 year rebuild and are still a few piece off a serious top 4 list. Some might already be here but we are not at the Crows level yet and North should surge at some point.
"When did our rebuild start" is a common question or statement.
There was the first one which was built on Dunny, Acres, Longer, Hicky, Paddy, Goddard, Billings, Gresh, Coff, Clark, Clav, Pato, Marshall, Wilkie, Sinclair.
That one failed spectacularly, we salvaged only 4 players from it.
Then there was the one that started in 2018 with the drafting of King and topping up which is your favourite subject. That also failed.
Then there was the one initiated by Ross and SOS which probably started on the day of the "leaked" audio from the practice game "I can't take this lot anywhere"
I've argued with Stav over +/- 12 months from that date, but that's roughly how long we've been rebuilding for, not 14 years.
For the first 11 of those 14 years we were simply ****ing it up.
Habitually saddling the current mob with the failures of the previous is so bloody tedious.

Yep, had this same conversation when I said Brisbane and Carlton will jump. North would be hard to watch but they've done the work to build a solid list.
No they haven't. They got handout, after handout, after handout. Adelaide, Brizzy, Hawks have done the work, not Norff. They squibbed it big time.

North deliberately destroyed their list, then were an embarrassment.
Laura Kane went cap in hand to the AFL demanding free draft picks at the expense of other clubs ( like us). Scott at the AFL rejected the Kane proposal.
Then the AFL made their DEI choice and it was Laura Kane straight from North Melbourne.
Then surprise, surprise, the free picks over a number of years was approved by Laura Kane.
They got top ten picks and picks at the end of the first round, multiple first round picks.

Plus being total shit for years and look at that, they have a whole bunch of terrific young players.
It stinks to high heaven and all never mentioned by the AFL industry.

Absolutely.
The architects of their own demise - and rewarded for it. Total rort.

It's not mentioned because it's blatant corruption. The media know who feeds them.

Oh and I am being mischievous calling Laura Kane DEI, just because she is a woman.
I am sure she is a very good administrator, I am just pissed off that her proposal is rejected until she joins the AFL.
I have heard nothing of her recusing herself as there was a obvious conflict of interest.

I also noticed this. On the AFL website in the '7 things we learned' article. All about the Cats.
It's been like that for 12 years. Completely irrelevant. At least Cornes cares enough about us to give us a whack!

It's possible she was recruited for her stunning lack of integrity, and being a woman was just a bonus to the virtue signalling aholes at head office.

Turns out she’s not very good, the AFL just appointed Geoff Walsh to hold her hand lmao

It pretty much a pre-requisite for many jobs at AFL house I’d say.

Whatever happened / is happening with the Geelong investigation?
Why do I have this feeling it’s going to be swept under that lumpy carpet at AFL house.

Time rushes by and will we pause to ask ourselves how that happened against Geelong?

With a ragtag midfield we beat a team that was good enough to leave out a player the calibre of Mitch Duncan, even when Bailey-smith was struck down! Truth be told we were a toe poke and a tad of inexperience (young Geelong players bombing forward in the last three mins) from losing that.

But we won and how come these dice all rolled out six?? How come..
1) Mitchito comes back 100% - straight back to 2023 form!
2) Ro was all cooked Round one but had been touched by the magic wand and he is statue resurrected!
3) Jack Sinclair is all go! Go go!
4) The Irishman is standing in the middle of a tempest and is as like a rock!

What a remarkable turn of events.

Any other way we lose!

How come?

Now in a day or two we might come back to earth a bit and realise that even North and the Tigers are no more gimmes.

Absolutely anything could happen next week.

Last l heard there was no Geelong investigation, l think it was Whateley that said it. Been killed off quick before grew legs.

How is even possible to put a figure/number on the ‘extras’ a player gets for his/her family, over their lifetime, when they are convinced to jump clubs. How are we even to interpret a comment like, ‘family first’ from such a player?

Just think of the benefits of school/education connections for kids (can always be camouflaged as scholarships) of sports club memberships (a fringe benefit of sponsorship) , health care (club offers family health care - for life as part of bla bla) but then there are even more benefits that are based on access and introductions to people with power - access to lawyers, (camouflaged as he’s a Hawthorn man etc) , to tradespeople (he built Lance’s pool, looks after the boys) , and real-estate ! But it isn’t even limited to club friends! Once you are ‘inside’ that elite you’ll have access to other stars’ from other clubs lawyers, financial advisors etc, there is just no end to the trail of benefits and privileges that can put for a player and their children. And their children etc etc. it would be pretty easy to say yo oneself, ‘ I’m 24, I have 2/3 years max to get onto this gravy train and there are no guarantees. I’ll need to be ruthless and I’ll need to be disciplined and I’ll lose a few friends along the way, but hey..that’s life”

He does a lot of 1% stuff that gets missed in the wash up. A hand on the ball of an opposition player that slows their possession a fraction, a small bump that spills the ball. He manages to get in between the ball and opposition player a lot which gives time to our mids.
I understand the frustration with him with some on here, but I wasn't the least surprised he got a contract extension.
100%
Watching on weekend live he just does little things that get it going our way ….a hand in…a deflection..he’s laconic but oddly important we looked better when he was on
I also don’t get the hate he’s has injuries but I genuinely hope he gets a run at it cause he adds a point of difference to our mid rotations

50 games is that point where consistency tends to kick in. Owens would have taken a lot of confidence from that performance. He looked like he knew he was the alpha dog up forward. Windhager too, just a super pro performance and lots of little bits of clever play that showed he's got some glitter on his disciplined demeanour.
Yep have been but worried bout Windhager….does he have another gear
He does
He just now needs to work on consistency
He’s also quite smart with ball in hand gets it away not often rag dolled
He’ll be a very good mid
Agree re Owens …IF he could improve that kicking 10% he’d be a genuine star
His contest work is class though

Need to remember that Windy’s last two years have been partially derailed by a broken hand in both of the pre seasons. Put him back quite a lot and if I recall correctly spent a lot of time in the vfl.

He had already successfully tagged a couple of good players - think Neale may have been one? - while still getting possessions of his own..

I think his reportedly excellent work ethic will stand him in good stead, and hopefully he’ll be learning a lot from Lenny and McRae.
He’s going to be a very good player for us, imo.

Yes so I was correct to go all Andrew Tate/Trumpy on her. Obviously DEI.
Now we have to Norfies there, more free dps incoming for sure.

I looked at the Geelong board last week. They seemed to think he is finished and needs to be nursed to 300 games.

Is that what the leaked audio actually said? I don't recall ever hearing this before.

You are blinded by Norths weekend win as to where they really are. It was only a week early they got comfortably beaten by a half strength Footscray.

Adelaide different kettle of fish. Why? Simply because they went hard in the offseason adding Cumming Peatling and ANB to what they have.

The previous few years they landed big fish. Rankine and Dawson.

They still managed to draft:
Thilthorpe pick 2 2020
Rachele pick 6 2021
Soligo pick 36 2021
Curtain pick 8 2023
Draper pick 4 2024

And blew a pick 11 on Pedlar in 2020.
Just solid recruiting over 5 years and has led to this season.

For comparison:

2021
NWM p11
Owens p33
Windhager p47

2022
Pou p10
Caminiti rookie

2023
Wilson p18

2024
Travaglia p8
Tauru p10

Big signings:
Henry ?

So, in comparison. We have ALOT OF young talent that is still finding its way. Might be another year off.

Haven’t had the success the crows have had via trade or free agency.

Haven’t had the absolute pinnacle picks they have in that time.

BUT.

Add TDK in. Another aswell?

Find a good one or two from:

Keeler Collard Hastie Ari Garcia O’Connell Hall Barrat Boxshall Said Dodson

And our own narrative changes big time too.

Post round 2.

- we have used the equal most players thus far. We need another 2 changes this week aswell. So likely a Travaglia debut. Carrol Henry?

- we are below the league average for average selected side age. We still haven’t played.

Travaglia Tauru Henry Carrol King Pou Barrat said Dodson McLennan Sharman. Maybe have missed a couple aswell who we would hope become part of the future.

It’s likely we need another year getting a good pick. Cutting the list and recruiting.

But… you could also see a word where we finish 7-8 just off the sheer talent that hasn’t yet played and I haven’t included Howard as he is important for our structure.
