Re: We lose!!!!

they played alot better than the cats almost all game, they got the ball down to there forwards so easy and were first to the pill early in the game.....but to go down by on a goal and not really play the whole game and with stevie and otto to come back

Re: Cam Mooney - Major Concern

yes Ottens may get a gig in the forward line with maybe Hawkins getting a rest in the VFL for a while once Otto is fit enough to play

Frankly, Ottens does not fill me with confidence in the forward line. He is just as capable of shanking easy shots at goal as anyone.

Re: We lose!!!!

Brave effort, absolutely everything spent by the fellas, having Gardiner kicking 4 goals was decisive. Not sure if he's ever done that before. Add Ottens and S.J to the mix, and things might be different.

Yeah! where's Lonergan, should be available to cover Gardiner and the like. And he plays forward as well.
Stupid team selections will cost us the flag if these types aren't played, we need tall players to help Scarlo and Taylor they're the only talls down back, and they're not overly tall anyhow.
This proves it, we have to ring changes or we may stumble once again.

Am I the only one who didnt mind us losing? Sure it was a dissapointment but was an awesome game, especially the second half. And the way the Cats just kept on pushing back was awesome (although they shouldnt have been in that position to begin with.) That second half had some good signs from Mooney, Mumford is improving, Taylor is good.

Will be a good wake up call. In a way I know how Hawthorn felt last year I suppose when we beat them in round 17.

Secondly, We gave them a game leading start which ended up being decisive. There was a few coin flip moments when the scores were tied but the Saints took theirs and we didn't.

Best H&A game you could ask for. Shows how far off other teams are.

How do you respond?

Just wondering how the Geelong football club respond after the disgraceful umpiring in the last term. in particular the "raping" (couldn't find a better term) of Gary Ablett in the last quarter.

The amount of times Ablett was held and no free kick was called, but I must admit that he has got a more than fair deal for the rest of the season. The advantage that the umpire called with minutes left was laughable at best.

Just wondering what action must be taken after this monstrosity?
Do you simply get another ex-player to bitch and moan to the media as Voss did for Ablett last year?

Re: How do you respond?

Wow Hawthorn a supporter even whinging about umpiring when they are not playing, impressive commitment to the cause.

Losing may be OK. Let all the flogs drool over the Saints & Collingwood for the next 8 weeks. We can just quietly go about our business. Michael Voss will be happy thinking that we may be as flat as a tack for next weeks game at the GABBA.

One thing's for sure. Get the Saints out in the elements on the 'G, which is where we'll play them come finals time, put SJ and Otto in the side, and we'll smash the crap out of them. Ablett, Selwood and Bartel killed them today, and they'd have silver service next time around with Ottens hitting the ball down their throat.

Good to see Moons with his kicking boots on today though. :thumbsu:

Those umpiring decisions in the end were costly, if not deplorable (advantage, my arse!), but we shouldn't have let them get out to a 5 goal start to begin with.

Rocker oz 33 - 'they played alot better than the cats almost all game, they got the ball down to there forwards so easy and were first to the pill early in the game...'

I took half a page to say this - but spot on !

Don't mind the criticism but if you could be more specific ? My perspective is not about today so much but what Geelong may need to look at if it is to win this year's flag. What worked and did not work - in a big game and under substantial pressure. You cannot sit back and not continue to learn and evolve to win this year's flag - as the Bullies are coming as well.

PS. Doesn't make me feel any better Geelong gave them a start - and that's why Geelong lost. I would say they were out played us considerably in the opening 20 minutes of the game and deserved their lead. If that is enough for them to win the game - then they beat Geelong fair and square. What Geelong learn from this is now surely the point - given Geelong LOST the game.

Re: Cam Mooney - Major Concern

how many times did a cats forward have to beat 2-3 guys in marking contests?

i think mark blake has more to worry about...washed up gardiner took him to the cleaners.

Gardinar took two marks close to goal while Blake was within distance but was unable to mount any defence. The result was two goals.
He only has tapouts as his only tool and brings nothing else to the game. No defensive skills, no contested marks.

Best game I have ever seen TBH.

We will no doubt learn plenty from today's match. But the Saints are the real deal, they deserved to win although I am still convinced come finals time in front of 90,000+ at the MCG we will beat them.

And may I just say that everything positive I have ever said to defend Mark Blake has been utterly obliterated as of today. His horrendous showing against Gardiner was literally the difference in the match, and he has completely blown any chance of maintaining his position when Ottens returns. We should look to move him on come the end of the year. We have the back- up stocks to do it, so we should.

Hawkins

This bloke needs to spend a few days every week in a boxing ring learning to get angry and dish out some punishment.

When he's not getting his hands on the ball at least use that mountain of a body to crash some packs and run through a few blokes, he has to find some way of having an influence on a game, and if its not on the scoreboard it has to be with his body.

When he's having a game like he did today we're effectively 1 man down.

I dont want him dropped cause that means Lonergan comes in, and i think the longterm answer is Hawkins.

Just get some bloody mungrel about you Hawkins PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Otto and Mumford should be our ruck duo come finals time. Mumford has so many more strings to his bow than Blake does, it's not funny.

Re: Cam Mooney - Major Concern

Blake's insistence on being a spectator during pivotal moments of games is a definite concern. I'm far from a Blake-basher, but he's either got to pull his finger out, or step aside when Ottens comes back.

Re: Cam Mooney - Major Concern

Hawkins and Blake cause me much more concern !!! No Steve Johnson was an obvious hole in the side - but we should never have allowed them that ridiculous lead.
Hawkins had better grow up or he might be looking at another club and Mumford showed much more guts than Blake!.

Re: How do you respond?

We won't whinge.

I think that we can find a host of other factors where the club can actually do something about improving performances.

Bleeting like a lost lamb is not one of them.

Agreed; Ive been a bit of a Blake sympathiser in the past but he was dreadful today and Mumford was so so much better.

I wonder if they should play him at CHF and leave Mooney at FF.

Iwas concerned that he would not make a contest and hit the packs to enable the ball to spill for our smaller players.

I too am stunned by a ..... Hawks fan..... saying....man... woah

I question to if the goal awarded to Gardiner (his first) was a goal....

Re: Hawkins

I've seen the Cats play a fair bit and I feel he isn't ready for senior AFL Football, doesn't mark the ball or present himself. He is a liability on the field. He should be in the reserves until the end of the season. You need a tall forward and he isn't the option for now, will take a few more years to develop. Should try and get Hall for next season and have him in the team until Hawkins is ready or bring back Lonners.

If we could somehow merge Blake & Mummy into one player we would have a killer Ruckman. Mumford opened the ruck from the 1st bounce and they killed us. Blake came in and we started to get clearances. Blake is a much better tap ruckman. How many times did Mumford tap into Montagnas hands? Too many. But Blake lacks the physical presence and that is his weakness. He should never have been allowing Michael Gardiner to take those marks.

Please come back soon Ottens!
