It's implied to do so ? (guessing from American culture) but I had never heard it be announced/referenced to do so until a few years back when Hamish was the MC for the stadium/channel 7 coverage of key events (anzac day/finals etc).

I'm not exactly against it - just find it odd, in one breath leaving your hat on shouldn't be a big deal. On the other hand taking it off isn't hard to do either.
