5: Aussie Jones to Ben McEvoy should end up a decent one.
I'm sure you'd love to forget about Fergus Watts

18 for Essendon:
Paul Van Der Haar, Matthew Lloyd, Michael Hurley
5: Terry Daniher, James Hird, Brent Stanton
Actually, for the Hawks I'd almost suggest number 24
Knights
Langford
Croad
(Cox, S)
Croad
Stratton
For consecutives, number 2 has been worn by 3 players since 1984
Chris Mew
Nick Holland
Jarryd Roughead
Was about to mention the #3 at West Coast.
It's a run of, what, 24 years so far and if Gaff lives up to what he's displayed so far, it could extend to 30+ consecutive years.
Now it's given to our No 1 draft pick each year, so in 10 years time, that's be an unbroken chain of 12 very good footballers.Number 35 was worn for 29 years by two players for Collingwood. Daicos and Presti.
Was Crimmo's number retired until Andy Collins? I knew they were holding it in case one of his sons made the grade, wasn't sure how long for though.
Would ask the same for number 5 at Geelong. Was it retired after Polly before Malarkey got it? There wouldn't have been too many years between the two. Malarkey came back after a year or two off and had to settle for number 6.
This weekend's AFL Record carried an article on the famous #23 at Hawthorn with the likes of John Peck, Don Scott, Dermott Brereton and Buddy Franklin having worn this number.
My question is about the longest uninterrupted run where the same number jersey has been worn by a very good footballer. (I'm hoping that such a term avoids debate that would possibly follow a category like "great").
I realise that in previous times - although a tradition re-kindled by Richmond - that captians where the same number, so that may be an unfortunate exclusion/ exception.
Dermie went to the Swans in 1994. Buddy joined the Hawks a decade later. In between such legends as Crawshay, Justin Crawford, Collica and Nathan Thompson wore the famed 23. If the Footy Record says it was uninterrupted then they need to sack their fact finder.
But all pale before the fabled #9 at University
1912 Jack Doubleday, 9 wins from 53 games
1913 Lester Kelly, 0 wins from 40 games
1914 Dick Gibbs, 1 win from 35 games
