-John REEVES (1949-55) 102 Games, 36 Goals
-John DUGDALE (1955-70) 248 Games, 358 Goals
-Arnold BRIEDIS (1972-83) 161 Games, 279 Goals

-Shannon GRANT (1998-2008) 243 Games, 323 Goals

That's a pretty damn good list, even if Lachie's not quite there yet.

10 at Essendon.

Alan Noonan 1967-1976
Garry Foulds 1977-1989
Gary O' Donnell 1990-1998
Mark McVeigh 1999-current

In that little group you have Essendon's best CHF and played 200 games; a 300 game dual premiership player; a premiership player and club captain and finally, the on-field spiritual leader of the club currently.

Was Crimmo's number retired until Andy Collins? I knew they were holding it in case one of his sons made the grade, wasn't sure how long for though.

Would ask the same for number 5 at Geelong. Was it retired after Polly before Malarkey got it? There wouldn't have been too many years between the two. Malarkey came back after a year or two off and had to settle for number 6.

Yeah there were at least couple between Farmer and Malarkey...

1962-1967 - Farmer, Graham
1970-1971 - Evans, Phil
1972-1976 - Barkley, David
1977-1986 - Malarkey, Gary
1984-1996 - Ablett, Gary
2007-2011 - Varcoe, Travis

35 - Robert Harvey to Jamie Cripps.... That was a solid 24 years worn by a very good player :D

Harvey - 2 Brownlows & a few B&F's

Cripps - has kicked 7.2 from 16 kicks in his career.... Solid effort

This weekend's AFL Record carried an article on the famous #23 at Hawthorn with the likes of John Peck, Don Scott, Dermott Brereton and Buddy Franklin having worn this number.

My question is about the
longest uninterrupted run where the same number jersey has been worn by a very good footballer. (I'm hoping that such a term avoids debate that would possibly follow a category like "great").

I realise that in previous times - although a tradition re-kindled by Richmond - that captians where the same number, so that may be an unfortunate exclusion/ exception.

Dermie went to the Swans in 1994. Buddy joined the Hawks a decade later. In between such legends as Crawshay, Justin Crawford, Collica and Nathan Thompson wore the famed 23. If the Footy Record says it was uninterrupted then they need to sack their fact finder.

NO, the Footy Record doesn't suggest a consecutive run...... I was asking for the unbroken streak.

Peck, Scott consecutive

Then Paul Abbot (a premiership player IIRC?)

Followed by Brereton

Four players - Crawshay, Crawford, Justin, Collica and Thompson followed by

Franklinn.

Hawthorn had a run of five consecutive premiership players wearing #4 between 1960-1990.

1960-62 Morton Browne
1963-72 Ken Beck
1973-78 Kelvin Matthews
1979-88 Peter Russo
1989-90 Andy Collins

Also had six consecutive premiership players wearing #12 between 1971-98, if you include Paul Harding (1992, West Coast).

But all pale before the fabled #9 at University

1912 Jack Doubleday, 9 wins from 53 games
1913 Lester Kelly, 0 wins from 40 games
1914 Dick Gibbs, 1 win from 35 games

#4 goes alright for us.
Sam Kekovich, Ross Glendinning, John Mossop, Michael Martyn, Daniel Harris, now worn by Liam Anthony

#27 1956-98
Dwyer, Greig, Crocker
