LOL - I hate revealing my actual team (even though the Premiums shouldn't change too much over the preseason), but I'll say who I like and any risks they may have:

Dane Swan: Almost a lock - the only concern is the amount that he is interchanged (the most interchanged player in the AFL last year) which helps him immensely to break tags, and which will presumably not occur so much with the reduced interchange bench this year ... I do expect his figures to drop somewhat, but as you'll see there are question marks over all the other players too. :)

Chris Judd: Would be a lock were it not for the fact that he has had an interrupted preseason and is still suffering somewhat from the effects of a bruised heel and Quad injury.

Luke Hodge: Absolutely love him, but he can be tagged in the midfield more readily than the previous two players and his scores seem to suffer more as a result ... also unsure whether the Hawks having more premium midfielders (a fully-fit Burgoyne this year, Cam Bruce who has been playing midfield this preseason, Riolli being used in there for longer bursts) will help or hinder his scores - maybe too much uncertainty for me at this price.

Scott Pendlebury: Don't see much potential downside here. A great player in a great team, who is coming a bit closer to his prime age-wise. Will rarely cop the number 1 tag due to Dane Swan and when he does has a unique attribute in his height (190cm) which helps.

Dal Santo: Not particularly fast and he really struggles with a hard tag meaning his week to week scores are a bit variable ... having said that just look at the consistency of his year-to-year Supercoach averages and how high they are. Quality. If the photos I saw over the pre-season are any indication, he should be getting a LOT of hard balls this season. ;)

Montagna: Not as many years as Dal Santo as an Ultra Premium, but harder to tag, reasonably consistent and has a very high ceiling as far as scores go. Had a huge breakout season 2009 and his 2010 was good - are his scores on the way down ? I doubt it. I also doubt that he will finish the year averaging 125 again, but he should be solid for another 110 year.

Brendan Goddard: The best of all options this year, but I'd start him in the backline.

Chapman: Ping !! LOL - last year was the first time in ages I haven't picked him and the first time in ages he hasn't had hamstring problems. I'd wait to see if I put him in my team - if I do, don't select him yourself as he will have an injury plagued year. If I don't, jump on board and grab him as he will remain uninjured all year. I'd start him in the Fwd line though.

No love for Selwood?

Judd, Hodge, or Montagna? Would love Pendles but I already have Swan, and dont really want more than 1 premium player from each club in one area.

Lots of love for Selwood - but not this year until we see how he responds to being the number 1 player tagged at Geelong (see my previous comments - just a few comments up from here).

Out of Judd, Hodge or Montagna - If I had to choose one ... it would be ... Joddge ... :thumbsu:

haha, even though your response doesn't answer my question, it eliminates Montagna, which makes my decision some what easier...

LOL - at least you picked up on that nomenclature subtlety :)

But, not wishing to be obtuse, if Judd wasn't injured it would be him over Hodge this year in SC for me (even though I prefer Hodge as a player in real life personally).

People's thoughts on Jimmy Bartel?

Heard somewhere he always stepped it up when Ablett was out of the team.

He does - but has been wearing his "elbow brace" all preseason (elbow injury last year) which is NOT conducive to getting a good preseason training in ...

I have Judd filling the spot already, and wouldn't even consider changing him if he didn't have an unjury cloud. I think Hodge has a higher ceiling but doesnt cope with close attention. That said with Burgoyne, Bruce and Rioli all looking to spend plenty of time in the midfield he may not have too.

Is an %90 Judd better than a Hodge who might get tagged out of the game?

Probably - because despite the new additions to the Hawk's midfield, Hodge will be the first tagged. Judd is too, but he handles it better (and may be helped by Brock Mclean doing more "grunt work" until his inevitable injury :))
The only things clouding the situation for me are Judd's injury concerns (and diminished preseason) and the fact that I really like Hodge as a player.

So you’re leaning towards Judd.
Im getting ever closer to having you make the decision for me :p.

I agree with you on Hodge, love him as a player (wish the zone was still in place so he could wear the blue and white) but there is no room for favorites in super coach. Given he hasnt proven to be able to handle a hard tag, teams will take advantage of that. One would hope that seeing he was caught out last year, he would work on it over the pre season.

LOL - OK, I'll make the decision for you ... Judd. Hodge has had plenty of time to work on dealing with the hard tag (it's not like he's a youngster) and, if it hasn't worked yet ... (but we both agree we love him as a player) :thumbsu:

Now was that so hard. :D

How about this...

Take Judd out, put Gibbs in the midfield as an MPP for my backline (he is currently in my backline, and I have no mid/backs in my midfield) and add another premium back. My options would probably be Broughton, Lake, Johncock or Enright (any other suggestions are welcome).

Just another option to ponder, with Judd not holding 100% faith at the moment.

Put Heppell in your midfield.

Already have Heppell in the backline. If I moved him it would be at the expense of Gaff, Polec or I. Smith. And there are not as many rookie backs at the same level as Heppel that could take his spot. Suggestions are welcome.

i had judd in my team for a long time, until i realised there is better options out there especially if your out to win a league and not over all... u can get so many prems for midfielders... im tossing up between pendlebury or dal santo.. and a few others, but there my top 2 on my list!!!

Well D Swallow showed just how good he was last night - is there anyone out there who isn't going to pick him up? If so - what's the rationale?

Harris will average as much as Swallow over the season. He is cheaper and I dont want 2 GC mids.
I like your rational but at the same time...... really? I think not having Swallow will be like not having Barlow or jPod last year IMO. But good luck anyway mate. I personally hope both tear the season apart (having both) :thumbsu:

Anyone starting with Daniel Cross in their midfield? Perhaps there's not much potential upside on his price / 2010 output and he handballs a lot, but he's one of the most consistent premium midfielders.

It's a good question, i was wondering the same. I doubt too many will have him, i put him in last week but mucked around with it last night and ended up replacing him with Burgoyne then with Sewell.

Cross is a consistent performer and scores equal to or better than most of the premium mids other than the obvious and for some reason i have no doggies in my team

But, in the end i think Sewell will rip it up prior to having his brain re-arranged

If you went Cross though, i think it would be a good and almost unique pick in the midfield, which isnt bad considering what he scores

I would be interested to know what the past number 1 draft picks scored in their first seasons (Mids only). Scully, Gibbs, Murphy, Delidio, Cooney and then also what Harris has average.

Undesratnd that there may be a difference with Swallow playing a full season of VFL but these numbers could either back up or destroy my theory.

May as well answer my own post...

Scully - 71
Gibbs - 63
Murphy - 70
Delidio - 75
Martin - 78 (couldnt find Cooney).

HARRIS:
2005 - 74
2006 - 93
2007 - 86
2008 - 83
2009 - 74

At the cheaper price I'll stick with Harris
