If you are waiting for me to disagree that the urgent timing of this immediate agreement is a distraction for political gain well dont hold your breath.

Of course it is.

Doesnt mean im not in favour of it though - doesnt mean i cant still hate potato head and hair plugs.

Just means i finally have a policy i like - our best defence is being an island - its also our biggest weakness.

The germans showed that the best way to fight a country with an overwhelmingly strong naval advantage is by using submarines.

my issue is cheerleading this as a win, when its a $2.4b **** up, and kicks up down the road a further 5 years with fewer boats to boot

and we do this the same day we talk about war in Taiwan.

i legit dont know what our agenda is on this

Same here. I can't see it swinging votes for the LNP. Would have been better to spend the money on Australians and just invite the US and UK to set up fleets here.

Thats not why we cancelled. We cancelled because the french subs wouldnt be ready for our war with china.

my point is, the reasoning is bullshit. Dutton just wasted $2.4b because he wants a cooler toy

And our Finance Minister SA Senator Birmingham admitted on ABC Radio this morning that the Federal Government made an agreement with the US and the UK to shift to a new class of nuclear submarines without knowing either the potential acquisition and lifecycle cost of them OR the cost penalty to Australian taxpayers of withdrawing from the $90 Billion deal with France for the old ones.

To make matters worse, French media is now reporting that the Australian Government formally advised their French counterparts that they were proceeding with the existing €50 billion+ contract with them (albeit with substantial amendments) as recently as 2 weeks ago. The compensation that is likely to be sought by Naval Group is likely to be signficantly greater than that signalled by the Australian Finance Minister.

What is utterly amazing is the notion that the UK and US governments would trust this government with anything important, let alone their top secret nuclear propulsion technology.

Yeah well i keep watching dutton every day saying something new and inflammatory about china and it shits me to tears.

Walk softly and carry a big stick.

Brainwave 2. This is our suck up to China selling or letting it get stolen the nuclear propulsion technology

Nuclear furnace causes heat... heat boils water....steam drives turbines , turbines turn generators , generators make electricity. electricity drives motors.

China can do that.

Getting the feeling the libs know they are losing the next election and setting up some poison in the well for the incoming Labor government.

Which program? If that is the case then this government is utterly incompetent. I'm not against the idea of nuclear powered subs, but that is just gross negligence.

As long as we build the proven Virginia or Astute class that are in production already then it should be much cheaper and quicker to get them into service.

Would be even smarter to just add them to the existing UK or US production lines and just perform non nuclear maintenance here but politics will prevent that sensible option being taken.

My feeling is quite the opposite. This announcement is all about getting Morrison re-elected.

The Government is gearing up for a Khaki election in the knowledge that announcements on national security issues and draping yourself in the Aussie flag are very effective at taking the focus off political embarrassments such as a slow covid vaccine roll out, Ministerial indiscretions and faltering defence contracts.

Just as the Morrison designed 'Stop the Boats' and 'Sovereign Borders' campaign proved pivotal in getting Tony Abbott elected as PM in 2013, I am certain Scott Morrison is convinced a 'launch the boats' campaign and re-aligning with old allies in the United States and Great Britain to face an evil empire (in this case the PRC) will prove pivotal in getting him re-elected in 2022. Even better if he can make that announcement while sharing the stage with international leaders (even if one of them can't even remember his name).

That Albanese was so quick to align the ALP with this hastily contrived nuclear subs announcement that lacks even a hint of critical detail, tells you all you need to know about just how powerful this announcement is in terms of political impact on the Australian electorate.

There's an old saying in marketing - sell the sizzle not the sausage.

And with these nuclear powered sausages at least 20 and more probably 30-40 years away from ever becoming operational under an Australian ensign, if at all, former marketing man Scott Morrison has all the sizzle he needs to sell himself as the future PM needs in these 'very troubling times'. And we, the Australian voters, will fall for the same pea and thimble trick yet again.

Radio National. Listen here and see if you can find a single scrap of fact in this fluff:

it’s also the only play left.

God will protect us, the Pentecostals will pray and the plagues will fall on China...... oh wait their plague made it to us instead and now we're ****ed, carry on

Nail meets head. Even by Scotty from Marketing's standards, this has been platinum-level.

People out on Wednesday night thinking we're going to war with North Korea, or have made alien contact; instead we get an embarrassing U-turn out of a multi-billion dollar deal this same government signed only 5 years ago.

I don't know how he got Biden to go along with this charade.

I thought that was the case that the reactor was “black box” so we wouldn’t do any direct nuclear things?
