The french are being extremely petulant and their outrage is completely unjustified. It was a commercial contract for the supply of military hardware, not a military alliance or mutual defense pact.

Australia has changed its minds on its defense procurement strategy. It is a straight forward question of breach of contract and payment of compensation for the breach.

Why is the French reaction unjustified?

1/ They have just finished being screwed over by Trump for 4 years and then Biden does this? The Euro USA relationship was already at a tipping point - how much are they expected to cop?

2/ France does not give a shit about Australia and they have had zero respect for the Morrison Governments diplomacy skills for a long time.

The incompetence doesn't justify the French reaction.

Actually. This decision has put China in a more powerful position. Xi must be rubbing his hands at his good fortune.

Here we are trying to muscle up against the emerging superpower and the UK USA and Brits are busy ****ing over their European allie.

Genius!

Just wait for the French to gather EU nations and tell them to stop importing Australian products...it won't be far off.

Other that serving US interests why do we even need them? It's not like the Chinese will be threatened by our 8 subs.

Messaging wise they need Japan/Korea/India involved asap. Old colonial powers telling Asia what to do is not how you sell the message in Asia.

You risk losing support in SE Asia, and further fuelling the nationalist views in China.

If this action is being primary pushed by Asia and not westerners, that messaging won't work.

No efforts against China matter unless South Korea and Japan are involved

They are the ones with the true strategic value rather than little Australia in the anus of the world just following the US like a dog

petulance required for their domestic consumption i think - loss of face and of work for one of their businesses. You know the Australian government (either side of politics) would do the same, the austrlian public would expect such a response

I genuinely don't understand why Australia, blessed with their geographical location and certain resources, don't just stay neutral

Instead we strap ourselves into meaningless wars of US because the Australian branch of Murdoch-conservatives need to help out the US-UK main branches like an obedient co-worker, to the detriment of the country

So the french found out about this via the media.

Does this govenment actually know how to act like a govenment at all?

Their constant lens of focus is - how can we give the Murdoch media and its pleb audience its next sugar high. NUCLEAR SUBS! We STRONG on CHINA! ANGLOSPHERE!

We're little more than the USA's pitiful sidekick under the Liberals. We fit the role of a pissant, unthinking henchmen well.

The US helped us in WW2 and we have been their lap dogs ever since

It is depressing how little ambition this country has

The subs were the centrepiece of expanding French military cooperation. Which was announced only weeks ago.

You also have the right to break defence procurement contracts, but you don't have the right to expect this doesn't make you seem untrustworthy or unreliable or fickle.

All traits that go over well in the world of international security.

And how much extra does this cost us. If I'm going for an Australian defence contract, I'm now thinking how much it's going to cost me if Australia gets distracted by a shiny new toy 5 years in, and just dumps me.

I'm definitely building that risk into the contract.

Simple reality check. If the French had done this to us, the screaming and outrage and knashing of teeth from those that think the French over reacted would be awesome to behold.

Morrison is the best PM Australia has had since Howard.
He's the worst ever.

Even if you picked a hypothetically bad PM, Scumo is worse.

If Latham had become PM, maybe he would have been worse, but it's touch and go.

I'm pretty sure if Gillard or Rudd presided over this AUKUS deal, we'd have a fleet of solar powered submarines.
No, we would have a bunch of proven Japanese subs, already being built.

Instead we have Dutton saying we are going to war with China, and 8 subs we may see in 30 years.

It's ok though, I'm sure China will wait, Fair's fair.

I'm looking forward to the carbon tax.

Years after the LNP scrapped it, they are bringing it back. Well, not them exactly, it will just be those we export to, accompanied by a big middle finger from France.

This.

Please look at a ****ing map everyone.

Look at China, look at Aus, then look at China, then look at Aus.

Then look at the UK.

Shit hits the fan, we are getting nothing from the UK, and every year their influence and military power relative to the rest of the world falls.

They are in a military and strategic sense irrelevant to us, as we are to them.

The mere possibility that Japan or South Korea could side with Australia in a conflict pretty much precludes direct military action against Australia by China.

Ukausus or whatever it is is an emotional, dare I say it, snowflake like appeal to those that still think Australia is somewhere between Scotland and Wales.

Full of warm fuzzy emotions (the UK bit anyway).

Not surprising since Dan Andrews found out the Federal Government were giving Victoria an extra 800,000 Pfizer doses through the media at one of his pressers last week as well.
