From Rd 1 it appears, to me at least, that 3 teams are already well off the pace and will struggle big time.

Brissy- Gutsy, but they've lost their most important player (and only key forward of any note) and face 2 very difficult months without him. Vossy will need a miracle to win anymore than 2 games during this period.

West Coast- A win full of heart, but they've lost their best player to what appears a serious groin injury. Going to be a long year.

Richmond. The scoreline flattered the Tigers. They got the Blues at a good time, as they were missing a half-decent key defender. They were obliterated in the inside 50s and Jack is their only real shining light.

Too soon to call a long season for these teams?

Pretty much.
Who knows how Le Cras will affect West Coast.

Brisbane losing Brown is a real kick in the groin. They also lost Staker for the year and probably Beams for a while with a hip injury...

Big losses...But they played really well.

Richmond is hard to tell yet. They look undersized in KP spots, but I think their mids are better than they showed. Foley had gastro apparently. Martin was unusually quiet.

I doubt any of these teams will win a premiership, but that can be said for quite a few more than this, and could have been said just as clearly last week.

I think we'll still play each week though...If it's all right with you.

Hahah love that this thread was started by an Essendon supporter. :thumbsu:

It's probably to early to call I'd say. I'll wait before round 2 before i start making season ending predictions.

Not about Essendon at all. Just calling it as I see it with these 3 sides. Port won't have a great year, but I'm confident they'll pull quite a few good wins together.

Jack needs some decent support pronto or his side will continue to struggle. He is a gun, but you're not competitive if you're so reliant on one player to kick your goals. Who is the next best player the opposition has to plan for? Morton? Vickery?

Was going to say duck for cover Bombermick, but it's too late.

Would you of been brave enough to start this thread if you'd lost yesterday? ;)

Deledio.

He's a potentially devastating forward.

Not exactly a ground breaking discovery you have made.

It was to point out that Essendon are premiership contenders.

Gotta feel for Vossy and Worsfold.

Le Cras is a massive loss. On the brightside, Darling looks great.
Eagles have to weigh up where the list is and judge him on how the kids start coming through.
A bigger shame considering how good Cox was too. Season could have been respectable.

Lions just cant win a trick.
Lost Fev to Fev. Brown to a shocking injury (how did browns head not break that guys knee). And Staker goes down as well. Tall options are spent. Again, would be harshly judged if they finish last this year. Took a gamble, failed but came so close.

Tiges i cant agree on. That 3rd quarter was great to watch. If they could unearth a second target to play Ottens to Jacks Richo, and just keep themselves switched on, they could take it up to a few unsuspecting teams.
Morton looks like a great link up option in the middle. Graham keeps improving nicely and some of the kids are looking very very good.
Conca and Batchelor were good for first gamers in the heat of it all. Helbig wasnt bad either. If they can keep the core of Martin, Foley, Cotchin and Deledio firing in the middle, that isnt a bad setup.

I wonder if Miller has it in him to loom as a threat.
Liked the look of Derickx as well. Big unit. Good hands.

Not a great performance by the Dogs either at least WC had a win and Brissy gave it their all. Too soon to make predication like these.

If we had a honorable loss (which I was expecting) sure. :p I know everyone is canning me 'cause I support Essendon and all 3 sides were tipped to struggle. Just can't see any of these sides kicking enough goals this year. If we get done badly by Sydney I may have egg on my face, but it's not really about us.

I love the typical Bigfooty mentality.

As soon as anybody from the opposition dares to discuss another team in even the most slightly critical fashion rather than make a reasonable argument why the poster may be incorrect with his predictions/assumption, it is straight to the "So who does he/she support?" and then attempt (usually badly) to tear shreds off the posters own club for having the cheek on a public football forum to criticise their club. So predictable.

Richmond supporters in particular are so precious (not just in this thread but oh so many others), especially when it comes to all things Essendon of late. However it is getting easier to see with each passing week why... one club continues to flounder and the other decided enough was enough and has gone all out to try and improve, and improve they will.

I think its far too soon. Give the comp 5 rounds at least and then you can start to work out who deserved to win and who pulled off a lucky win in the first round.

I don't agree with that. Brown is a massive loss and can't be replaced but our midfield and defence looked far better than we did last year. Have a few rounds after our bye, Saints, GC, Essendon and North are all home games with Richmond being the only away game. If we finish round 9 with only 1 win then yeah season over.

Good post. To be fair, Richmond's future looks the brightest here because of their very good midfield talent. Richmond fans- who is going to provide a secondary target for Jack?

Fev was a gun during his days at Carlton but they always struggled because there weren't other threats sans Betts. All the good teams have two threatening tall targets. Collingwood have Cloke and Dawes, Hawthorn have Roughy and Buddy and Adelaide have Tippett and Walker.

I really liked the few minutes i saw of Derickx. Hit a couple of packs hard. Took some great grabs.
Not sure what his position is, but the tigers got a great return out of switching Ottens from a ruckman to a forward.

All they need to do is capture that mentality from the third quarter.
They're run was brilliant and when they take the risks to run the ball and deliver it forward they've got a decent enough forward line to capitalise.
Jack may not take the same marks as his cousin, but the ability to land on his feet and link up in a crumb is impressive.

It's 1 game, the season is over for nobody. Likewise the Pies don't have the flag in the bag.
