It was when Fullerton was left in nowhere land and way out of position. Consequently the Bulldogs rebounded because of it. There were plenty of those similar moments in the game that contributed to the loss....not just the umpiring decisions.
Yeah . A combination. My immediate thoughts after the game were we blew it by not putting the foot down when we had them by the throat in the 3rd and lack of composure in the last . Of course if the umpiring had've been neutral we would've won but when can you ever count on that. What was in our control we could've done better.

Frustrating game. The game itself was pretty electric to watch but the number of 50/50 calls that somehow all went their way were astounding. And then the number of non-calls on top of that. Several HTB calls, Bont's mark that Big O was holding in front at the same time... Rich's somehow touched mark... Can anyone explain how McCarthy got thrown to the ground and then the free was called, but immediately reversed? Pretty sure that turned into a goal as well.

I didn't really know how we were going to play that one out - No Hipwood, no McStay, Rayner would've been handy AF as well... and despite this, and stocking our forward line with defenders we still managed to only lose by a single point. It's easy to look at the simple numbers and go "Haw haw OuT iN sTrAiGhT sEtS" but I would argue we have definitely grown as a team. Just not our year this year.

The umpiring - and I use the term VERY loosely - was right down there with the robbery in the 1983 qualifying final Fitzroy vs Hawthorn, and that disgraceful performance in 1991 in Adelaide, with 8 free kicks in 2 minutes.

These blokes cannot be permitted to control another final, particularly one with Footscray playing. The AFL cannot possibly excuse that!

Well that was cathartic. Reading this thread, helped me understand my irrational anger at the end of the game last night. Usually I am fairly philosophical about umpiring, but that experience was too much.

great to read the wider football community also thought something was amiss.

Happy for the small minority of dogs supporters who found some additional joy from reading the thread and liking certain posts.(insert ironic thingy here) What miserable lives you must have.

Good luck next week to the majority of dogs supporters who were circumspect. Hope the Bont is ok.

Sometimes things just go against you, seems like that was the year we just had. Injuries. Two shots at goal that missed everything. As another poster said. “ it is what it is”

on reflection the team gave us another good year. Feel for the players, coaches and support staff this morning.

looking to forward to next year already.

ps loved the image of Rayner supporting teammate.

Hey Guys
Thought you played really well and should have won but for the shitty umpires. I don’t know why the dogs seem to get easy frees that other don’t get. That last qtr I counted was awful especially that non call for holding the ball in the middle that ended up with a B Smith goal. Good luck next year

For me Fullerton was an issue all night, he kept trying to get the ball out the back instead of turning and leading back at the kicker. Best example that comes to mind was when Charlie had the ball running down the interchange wing and he was waiting for Fullerton to turn and present for the kick but kept running away from him and consequently the ball goes over his head and out of bounds. With McStay or Hippy in the team thats a mark 60m out from goal with an open forward 50.

My biggest angst against the umpires is the frees we didn't get but the Doggies often did....HTB, incorrect disposal, length of time of a tackle and we even got done for a throw lol which was there but.............
Yep at the same time every non-call we received could be justified as the correct decision as well.
It was just one of those games.

Last 3 years in finals..

Last 3 years top 4..

Only 1 team can win....17 teams can't win

We have been up there, giving it our best shot. That shot may have been a lot better had we not had the injuries to our better players etc (and other forces)

We get those players back next year, with some luck as well, injury free we reset and have another go, we have the team to do that.

It's not that easy to win a flag, but we will not give up, we will keep having a go.

We are the Brisbane Lions......we will be back!:brisbane:

100% agree. Reading some posters here it's almost like we should be winning Granny's every year and if we dont there needs wholesale changes to our list and coaching group!!! So far away from reality its scarry.

Small minority of those are the ones who have forgotten how bad we used to be, in 2015-2016.

Credit to Fagan for bringing us to be not only be competitive, but consistently throughout years. This is what the club has preached about the last few seasons.
Thankful to see the club bringing success, finals is always great experience and when we make it into a Grand Final it will be all worth it. It does suck that we have more expectations but the reality is that we had so many young players out there. Coleman, Robertson, Payne, Fullerton, Starcevich (50 games how on earth)

This will be great learnings for the group, particularly the younger players. I was angry last night but now a lot more calm and happy to enjoy the ride. Some clubs go 40-50 years without a premiership, who knows when it may happen for us? What's good is that we have the right young talent who will ensure we never die wondering.

Well .. that seriously sucked. Our depth was really challenged .. and out last 4 or 5 'bottom list' players were exposed. Brought back memories of Fitzroy's finals loses in 1981 / 83 /84 , especially 81 vs Pies. That was shattering.

Footy Gods decided to tease then terminate this year. But brilliant turnout. Well done fans. We crave the catharsis of live footy ..

No we haven't all turned into Snake Baker..........or have we....perhaps a tad?

We were so banged up and that would have taken so much out if us, a fresh Port would have won by 60 points at home, lets be real.

Making a prelim would have been nice, but we can't even win finals and big games - hypothesising that we might have gone all the way is just not at all realistic IMO.

We are a 5 to 8 team, we finished where we belong.

We are going to carry a huge monkey on our back into finals next year, if we make it, that's for sure.
Agree - like Fitzroy in 1986. Two huge wins and then ran out of players and got hammered by a terrific Hawks team. Need to look at what Demons have done in re-jigging their game play and shoring up the defence.

We're in the window. Best take our chance. Look at Collingwood (minus the absolute sh*t storm of player management, actually don't look at collingwood)
If you dont think we gave it everything and didnt take our chances I am not sure what to say.
We are a young group and plenty of opportunities over the next 4-5 years ahead.
I for one am grateful for the enjoyment our team brings when you look at where we were a just a few years ago.
I am also excited to see where this group goes in the next few seasons.

Gosh that really really hurt. I don't know if we would have beaten Port and I highly doubt we would have won three finals in a row to win the premiership I just don't think we are quite good enough right now but I would still have loved for everyone involved in the club to have tasted victory last night.

Under manned and on the wrong end of some very iffy free kicks we were so brave and I can't be prouder of the effort. I really hope the boys have the resilience and hunger to go again next year. After playing finals for three years straight we shouldn't take it for granted that will just happen in 2022.

This is what I think we need to look at going forward...

Neale - Lyons - Zorko - McCluggage have been heroic the last three years in the midfield - Robbo to a lesser extent as well. But we need to start looking at rotating more players through the middle and in the case of Zorko much less time in the centre. These guys have been tremendous warriors for us but they can't keep doing it week in week out - year after year. Too many times this year I thought we looked tired and were overrun through the middle. Keep them fresh by adding midfield depth. Rayner - Bailey - Dev Robertson - J.Berry - they all have to step up next year and play longer mins in the middle. Zorko having bursts through the middle will be good for him and team and him resting forward will be a headache for other sides. Like wise Rayner going into the centre will be good for 5/7 min bursts. I like the idea of Lyons or Neale resting in a forward pocket - they are capable of kicking goals.

Coleman playing off half back in the last month has been a massive win for the side. He has looked really composed down back and offer a bit more speed and polish. Keep down back and get more games into him so he becomes even better in the position.

Birchall been a great servant for Hawthorn and for us but it's time to move on. Coleman / Answerth need to fighting for that spot. Hippy won't be back to mid season next year so we have a dilemma to think on for the off season. Do we keep playing Fullarton and hope he grows into the position or do we try to find some one else in off season who won't cost us much in wages/draft picks - and do we have the space in salary cap to do so? Is it worth throwing Mason Cox or Ben McEvoy a 2 year contract just to help out while Hipwood is out ? I'm not sure but these are the things that need to be looked at. Fullarton was better last night but he needs to improve a lot - still fumbles too much. Also Daniher needs to stop trying to play from behind hoping he can take mark off the round or get cheapie out the back. You're forward lead - how many times did McCluggae and Bailey run through the middle last night look up and had no one leading to them? Harris took more contested marks in 5 mins than Joe did for entire match.

Cockatoo should never have played last night - so unfit and no confidence in his body. I wouldn't play him next year until he 50% fitter.

We will get two players inside the top 20/22 in the draft so that will add some more quality but not necessarily players who will impact immediately.

Let's hope the players use this loss to strive harder next year but we can't just expect it to happen. We need a better run with injuries but I fear a few players like Gardiner are going to be struggling for rest of their career now and Neale was so bashed up this year. It's why we need to really build depth and to be fair by playing K.Coleman - D. Robertson - J.Prior -T.Fullarton -J.Payne we have started the process.

2022 we go again.

Anyone else seeing the delicious irony of the Bulldogs fans taunting all the talk about the umpiring, when only two weeks ago they were all pissy over 24 seconds?
