I can understand how people from other clubs and people that are not in the inner sanctum of this unfortunate situation may think this is a disgraceful thing to do to a VFL legend. The facts are this entire situation should be blamed on the outgoing president who has been president for the last few years. Yes we made the GF, but as a group of players and club this it was nothing like the last 15 years at ODFC. To keep it simple Steve had lost the players by round 5 the president knew about this, but was happy with the situation, he was far too busy causing fights within our club and with opposition supporters.

There was about 30 players that were not going to play at the club if Steve was the coach, there were also another 10 odd players that were not playing at the club due to other circumstances which happens every year, personally these players didn’t have a problem with Steve, Steve is the perfect citizen and genuine person. The president had managed to bad mouth and upset the main person who recruits all our players and also gets a lot of sponsors on board, so this person wasn’t going to get players and sponsors on board when these 40 players leave this year. So when the new president was elected he started ringing players and he got the same message that they were not playing at Oakleigh due to the coach and the previous president, the new president spoke to Steve and the previous president they were happy for these players to go, but both men didn’t recruit any new players, if they did recruit players and we would have been semi competitive Steve would have still been coach. The players did have a meeting on the Sunday and the general contentious was they wanted the group to stick together they spoke to Steve on the Monday and voiced their concerns again, then Steve resigned on the Wednesday. Steve didn’t have to resign he could have coached again but we would have been another Parkmore, we wouldn’t have lasted half the season. In the best interests of the club Steve resigned, which was the best thing for the club.

Unfortunately he shouldn’t have been reappointed for 2013, the correct channels were not followed if they were Steve would be coaching another club right now. As for winning a flag next year that’s not the most import thing, as long as the players and people around the club enjoy themselves that’s the main thing, with last year’s president moving as he was going to vice in 2013 but has moved on. The place will be to the way it used to like a fun place to be at for all.

Let me add to the train wreck that is the ODFC as this airs itself in a public forum.
It was a committee decision to reappoint Steve Wright not an individual. The vote was unanimous. The committee that have appointed him have now stood down in disgust over what has happened now that is loyalty all except for the new pres he went behind the coach and the committees back. What a guy.
This person who brings in major sponsorship has provided nothing in the last couple of years don't believe me check the books. He promised that he would form a syndicate to pay a 'big signing' no money forthcoming. This person then made written contracts with players then not let on that he had verbal contracts and sign on payments which the club didn't find out til later and have since honoured. This person was part of the independent body that originally signed on Wrighty he also fought to get rid of Pitts. His seconds player mate was even appointed assistant coach to Steve. So no surprise he now wants his mate as coach. Talk about stabbing someone in the back. FYI the ex pres was the one who got most of the sponsorship money and after this debacle the club has now lost this money as sponsors are pulling out. So then who is going to pay the players and then how many players will stay when there is no money.
The club became a better place when certain people walked out and this was reiterated by a lot of visitors and even a league executive.
The one regrettable incident was the Murrumbeena incident where he challenged a supporter of theirs to have the guts to go amongst the ODFC supporters and insult them. He was then king hit but why would we let the truth stand in the way of a good story. So yes all he did was stand up for those of the Districts. When he offered to step down the league asked him not to and may I add the murrumbeena supporter had been in trouble previously with other clubs.
when the ex pres asked if the players had an issue with him on the night of the infamous meeting he was told they didn't have a problem with him at all. So what was said in an open forum at the club was a lie?
The ex pres did listen to the players and did speak to Wrighty on their behalf but this was the same conversations the players were having about Pitts. Btw Pitts did not apply for the coaches job in 2012.

So yes the inmates are running the asylum

Sounds like the whole joint is a shambles. Good luck to anyone that is involved trying to clean up that mess. Egos ruin footy clubs and from afar and let me say a long long way afar it seems as though egos everywhere and on all levels have brought this cub to its knees

This is obviously ex pres who wrote that post?????? The new president didn’t go behind anyone’s back he made his own views after investigating the matter for over a week and that was made public from the start. As I said previously if the club went on with Steve as coach the club would have folded mid 2013 so yes a tough decision had to be made, please note Steve resigned in the end he could have gone but there was a reason he resigned. In regards to the club being a boys club I don’t agree, the changes had to be made on and off the field due to the ex president driving sponsors, life member’s supporters and players away from the club. It’s not just 3-4 people the pres rubbed up the wrong way, plenty more, what makes it even more embarrassing when he start’s to lose a argument or doesn’t get his own way he will resort to physical violence which he always comes up second best, this is the way this man has operated all his life.

The ex signed 1 sponsor over the time he was president, if this sponsor was to jump ship it would be the way the ex had looked after them. The other sponsors were signed on before before the ex started the ex was also given new sponsors on a platter but because his manner couldn’t seal the deal. This person who gets sponsors and recruits into the club has been this for 10 – 15 years and been doing a great job, yes this year he found it tough to get sponsors on board but again a major factor was the way the ex pres went about things with him. It may have been a committee decision but the un rest had been kept away from the committee by the pres so obviously the committee would agree. I wonder how our previous coach Grant Pitts and Shayne Sheedy would view the ex pres????????

The one regrettable incident at Beena, what about punching on at Hampton with their supports, the Thursday before the GF this year and in the rooms after the GF more physical violence, if you want me to go on let me know?

No not the ex pres he does not use a computer. Just someone within the club that feels he deserved defending. He wouldn't know how to log on nor does he read this as he doesn't hold stead for faceless people.
It's obvious who Turffontein is. And obvious that this player is trying to blame everyone else for them in effect forcing Steve to stand down.
A couple of life members left and were no loss. Many more came back.
Like to know who the only 1 sponsor was as he got as he got anumber of others who tipped in $1000. Check the books and who were the sponsors driven away? Don't say your mate as said he hadn't provided anything in a couple of years despite his promises.
And for such a bad pres he was asked by many to stand again but declined.
Hampton he asked someone to stop swearing in front of his daughter and he did nothing ask those who were in the rooms. His daughter was petrified when he was hit.
Yes he has temper issues. GF night got out of control and when someone started emptying a fire hose on the tiles it was easy to see that someone was going to get hurt.
I find this quite sad that this club I played for has made itself available to public derision.
I look forward to seeing how the 2013 season transpires and wait with baited breath as the new coach is announced though why anyone would want the job has me stumped.

Edit that should be a the life members were a loss as they did work hard for the club but many more did come back which was great to see.

Both turf and all sports make good points. I played just under 10 years at districts and know a fair few of the central characters here.

The ex pres is a bloke who feels his way is the right way, can't fault him there. However his mannerisms and demeanor can be taken as intense and abrupt, and he's an old school bloke who's not adverse to throwing a few now and again. Not necessarily a good look on players (especially gen y blokes), parents, wags, sponsors etc..

Never an easy decision to make, but if one feels that a great club will die off if change doesn't happen, then witha heavy heart you do it. I feel bad for wrighty and also for the club, and hopefully they can now get on with the business of next year

I was going to send a post with plenty more issues with the ex pres but couldn’t be bothered, no need to check the books I know the truth. His reputation over the years speaks for itself with everything he has touched with sports or his working life business etc.
If he had everything under control and did a good job the club wouldn’t be in this situation. Steve could have coached in 2013 it was his choice, him resigning says that he knew that he couldn’t continue and put the club first, I complement Steve for this.

Let's just put it out there what we all know needs to be said,
Oakleigh are a bunch of criminals and after their actions during finals we all welcome them to 2013 as the most hated club in divy 2.

I couldn't have said it better myself so very true the man was a bully, a liar.

From a Div 2 fan, at last OD get their just desserts. A quality bloke like SW couldn't fix their culture of drunks, spivs and brawlers. Good luck, Fermanis, you'll slot right in...

I know who you are and you should watch your mouth, there's no need to call someone a fat slug.
Are you serious? A fat Slug? A man has been humiliated, betrayed, stabbed, publicly ousted by a group, and you hang your hat on "A Fat Slug"? You know who I am? Its not hard, and I do not hide the fact, that I am a close friend of a victim, standing up for his rights as he is too proud to air his thoughts, sorry dude, watch my mouth? Really pathetic, its only just begun my slimy friend, just add salt to a slug and see it shrivel, cruel but effective.

ODFC has asked for everything that they are currently getting - their culture has been abysmal for years- the crap that went on jusy before half time in the Prelim showed the football world that. A good and noble man in Steve Wright tried to change what had beome ingrained, only to see the Committee cave to the very special interest groups who had contributed to the crap culture

As an outsider looking on you have to wonder how ODFC made the Grand Final. If the Stevie lost the players after Round 5 then I shudder to think what would have happened if they were playing for him. If there was such dissension in the ranks, then it shows in the performances on the ground.
I have been around a few clubs in my many years and I can tell you there are people out there who would prefer to see the world burn rather prosper without their control.
Time will tell but I suspect the instigators of this coup de tat may discover to their shock that they are not universally loved and there will be others waiting in the wings ready to whisper and agitate. In the end the club suffers and the people who do the hard yards every week without thanks will eventually walk. Seen it all before.

meanwhile down at ODFC, the new coach settles into the vacated position

It just shows how little impact a coach actually has at this level of football. A 'good coach' is basically the coach with the best contacts or biggest budget.
