Should we forget about RWO?

Thanks for the update Des.

I don't mind this place so much, it's just that there doesn't seem to be as many Swans fans posting here as at RWO, which means less activity. I'm looking forward to getting RWO back!

Grayham, I'm sorry if you feel as though RWO owes you something for your support.. But I can assure you it is (probably) not personal!

Did I say it owed me anything ?

We are consumers, and as such have a choice where we frequent. IMO its an illinformed decision to not get the board up asap even if it meant old posts. (who reads posts older than a day anyway, and what a nostelga trip to see what we posted in Aug 04). Just seeing how people felt about the delay ?
Hopefully you will learn from this, and it wont happen again next week.

Grayham...and your contributon to RWO is?

The term 'consumer' implies a commercial relationship. There is a commecial relationship in this BFB forum by virtue of its advertising, but that relationship is absent on RWO.

RWO is a free service provided by passionate people for lazy bums like me, who contribute nothing but gain a lot. When the wheels fall off, as they occassionally will, people like Des don't deserve to be chastigated by 'consumers' like you.

How about consuming some humble pie.

Even here on Big Footy, most pay nothing for their 'membership'. The only commercial arrangements exist between the administrators and the advertisers who pay to advertise and those members who have paid to upgrade to premium membership.

Thankfully the vast majority of posters seem to understand that their enjoyment of boards like RWO is entirely dependent on the goodwill of Des and the time he has invested in creating the infrastructure - and to a lesser extent the team of mods (led by Mike) who do their absolute best to keep the place civilised and the writers (led by Chammond).

It is sad that this understanding is not universal.

It really is quite simple grayham/barry/whatever you want to be called - Des doesn't tell you how to run your site, and you should treat him in the same way. Basically, if Des was running the site to make a profit, I'm sure he would have been alot more annoyed at the slow response from the webhosts, but the fact is, its a free site, that takes a back seat to more important things in life (of which Des has a number of going on right now).

So get over it, and if you choose to come back when RWO is up and running again, then great, if not, I don't think it will cause anyone to lose sleep.

Is there any point going back to RWO if/when it eventually comes back online ?
This site is ok, and we arent getting an interlopers trolling, even though we are so close to the AFL area.

Should we support a site that goes down for 10+ days during a critical part of the season?. When next ?
You can do whatever you like but I'll be going back to RWO once its back online. I think your judgemental comments in this thread about RWO's administrators are unfair.

Fair call, but no such thing as a free lunch. The people who buy the products, induced by BFB advertising pay for the forum in the form of higher prices. Personally, I value the community spirit of a forum free of advertising run on goodwill, but also appreciate the BFB advertising supported model.

Anyway, back to the footy...is Ben Matthews a hack or what? Would a team of Ben Matthews beat a team of LRTs? Would such teams playing in an empty stadium make a sound?

As someone who has been a poster on RWO from its infancy in the Rivals.net days I would be extremely sad to see RWO disappear

RWO is not just a message Board, it is also an information web-site from a fans perspective. Sure its biased, but hey what else did you expect. It is a chat room, and it is a place to go to talk about anything you damn well want to. You can engage in anything from light hearted banter to downright personal abuse (until those mods stick their beaks in), it doesn't even have to be about footy. The big bonus with RWO is that on the whole it self regulates itself.

RWO is a place that many have formed lasting friendships as a result of it being in existence, and to just say "stuff it, its been down for a week, we've lived without it, what is the point of having it anymore" means that you haven't really enjoyed what the site and its members have to offer you.

Should we forget about RWO?

No way!

Dr-J you forgot to mention that RWO is the birthplace of the now prestigious Troy Luff Medal, enabling the fans to vote for the best player of the season - which is in itself a reason to keep it around. :)

The vibe is different from here on Bigfooty - maybe because it's a smaller group of posters, with more in common (ie. all following the same team). It's irreverent, funny threads, like the "What are they doing right now" thread on RWO mentioned earlier, that give RWO its own unique flavour. And yes, I have read some hilarious threads on Bigfooty, even though I don't come here as often. One thing RWO does lack is a really good Commetti-isms thread. ;)

It seems like most of the RWOers that came here (temporarily - I don't know) aren't settling in. I think that the reason is because RWO is smaller, where as BigFooty is 50 times the size. RWO is like a little community. A family. But here, more like a mafia. :p

I tend to agree with the people here that don't care how recent the board is, as long as it's back and we are all eglible to make a post. A pity for the people who hadn't signed up by then. All I know is that I had 2 posts back then.

Well thank God ROK is back - but who was responsible for closing the "I'm Back" thread?

Honestly - the militant midget mods on this board are ridiculous. (hmm methinks that I will be reprimanded - like I give a toss!)

RWO for me - and Des your blood is worth bottling for the effort you are putting in to take us all "back home". We do appreciate your efforts as its a bugger of a job.

Show me the way to go home.................................

Like it or not RWO is an extension of the swans. The mainstream media often use it as a barometer of swans fans feelings, and it generates passion in existing swans fans, and encourages new fans looking for an outlet of opinions.

I'm fully aware there is no commercial link between the two, but that does not mean there isnt a link. The only reason why not is that telstra (AFL) are a little nevous about running forums due to libel issues.

But when the site goes down for 11+ days during the footy season it reflects badly on the whole swans/AFL image in Sydney (club, fans, media). I'm sure some outsiders are saying words like: "typical", "culture", "1933".

FWIW, If my sites were down for 11 days (and I have one "free" non-commerical one), I would expect to be roasted over the coals.

Dont accept mediocrity....in anything.

grayham, I think you're missing the point.

Firstly, it is a free site run by a bunch of very dedicated fans in their own spare time. It has also been pointed out a few times that the problem lies with the host of the site rather than a lack of action on Des's behalf.

Secondly, The fact that there is a independent and well-run fan site reflects very well on the Swans and their following. I doubt outside fans would really care whether RWO is up or down. In fact, without naming names, a few other clubs don't have fan sites and would be envious of the quality and following RWO has generated over the past few years.

Finally, the fact that there has been such a commotion raised by its absence shows how valued it is by its members. If you want to leave, that's fine, but I doubt you'll find many other following your lead.

In that case, I dont accept any of the comments you have posted in this thread. :p
