Should we take a stand against soccer?

No, you mean "like most soft **** anglophiles i'll be doing everything to get the Soccer world cup here because then I can jerk off to the idea that Australian Soccer actually means anything on the world stage."

Soft? Yeah right. I've seen more hardened fans at soccer, by a long shot, than at any other code. And that comes after watching four codes of football for 30 years, and playing two codes.

The simple fact is, the WC means alot on the world stage for Australia and Australians.

There is no way I am voting for Rudd if he wastes our money on a stupid soccer world cup bid.
The sooner these turkeys realise that most Australians do not care about a 0-0 snorefest the better.

We draw 0-0 with Turkey in 2022?

Thanks for telling us the result of a game that wouldn't have been decided until the final whistle.

For me taking a stand against soccer is the only way. These people are trying to trojan horse the AFL, that is destroy it. The only actions I can take is not to buy A League membership or go to games. Every dollar these people get will probably be aimed at wrecking the AFL and I cant accept that. ITS TIME TO SAY NO TO SOCCER!

The simple fact is, that the AFL , NRL and S14 season means a lot for Australia and Australians .

.

I wouldn't deny that, i'm part of that too. But, the question is, when it comes to the crunch, what would people prefer. From what I've have seen, by a long long way, it is the "football" world cup. The surveys and polls i've seen indicate this, and even on this most AFL of all websites, a large part of the punters here by and large want it too, even at ANY cost. Not everyone, but alot.

You and i both know that those polls are rigged by people in soccer forums desperate to gain attention for their code in this country.

The polls also only largely show one demographic.

I think this is the key thing. As the costs go up more and more public support would fall away, till we reach the point where those wanting it here at ANY cost are in the minority.

I'm worried that the costs will get out of hand, and that the governments won't be able to stop spending. It will be used as an excuse for everything. If we get the 2022 World Cup, should we aim to meet FIFA minimum requirements and not exceed them, or should we go all out to put on the most impressive show we can manage. There is a big difference between them in cost, I think we could do the former but the latter would be unaffordable. However, I think there will be pressure to go for the most expensive option.

Anyone who has any love for our game of footy needs to take a stance against Soccer. Soccer is trying to destabilise AFL Footy and in time takeover. None of us want the death of our code and the only way we can prevent it is to stay loyal to the AFL and to our clubs and tell the FFA and the A League clubs to go shove it.

Switch the roles in that paragraph and you have the history of VFL/AFL-soccer relations in Australia for the past century.

There is no doubt they are after our territory and I've heard Robert Walls mention before that we should do everything in our power to ensure that soccer does not flourish.

In what ways could we do this taking into consideration they may be in for a windfall of government dollars over the next few years.

It's got nothing to do with allowing soccer to flourish.

It has everything to do with the Government directly supporting a foreign competitor against a local entity, using the assets of the local entity.

There's a question of social justice involved, especially if the Government tries to force the AFL to hand over both grounds.

I agree with you.

Unfortunately for the government (and Soccer), they do not control the judiciary. If it goes to court the AFL will win. Unlike many places in the world that play soccer, we have the rule of law.

The AFL have the contract with both the MCG and Ethiad, during footy season, not Soccer.

The only way the government could force it through is to squeeze the AFL in other ways (e.g. threaten to withhold funding) and coerce them to negotiate an agreement with Soccer.

It wont get to that. This whole kerfuffle will ring enough alarm bells to get FIFA to award it to somewhere that actually cares about hosting the soccer world cup. Like England for example.

Interestingly, some soccer heads are arguing the exact opposite, that FIFA will somehow how see Australia as a "challenge" and it will embolden them to give it to Australia to fight off the other codes.

But it sounds like BS to me.

England will more than likely get the 2018 world cup, but the 2022 could go to either America or Australia.
Seeing as FIFA want to promote soccer throughout Asia, where two thirds of the world's population is, and a great percentage of FIFA's major sponsors are, Australia would stand a good chance of getting it.

It won't be easy, but Lowy has to 'convince' each of the the 24 member committee that Australia is the right choice.

Lowy managed to get Australia unanimously accepted into the Asian Football Confederation, when a previous attempt by David Hill was knocked back by
180 votes to 1.

One should never underestimate Frank Lowy.

Unlikely. In the greater scheme of things, Australia and the petty squabbling between rival codes are quite insignificant.

Our main advantage is that we are in the Asian time zone, with the millions upon millions of Asian soccer fans in Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea that they are targetting.

Australia's second advantage, which will become more obvious after the inevitable muggings and murders of soccer fans in South Africa next year, is that we are blessed with political stability and security.

After South Africa 2010, this point may sway the heads at FIFA

You're right about Lowy.

Even more amazing is the fact that he is Jewish, and the Arab countries form a very powerful bloc in the AFC.
