I'd be astonished if Tex retired at the end of the season

If we miss the finals, I can not see them having co captain in 2020, leaving Rory Sloane as the sole captain. With his body breaking down, he might consider it a good time to walk away.

first time i've seen/read pyke that emotional about a game we've played. embarrassing, outplayed, miles off, apologising. he might have done it before but i can't remember it.

i'll wait with baited breath as to whether this is the tipping point of realising the team needs to be freshened up or if it is just more talk coming from the adelaide crows.

I honestly think by round 1 2021 we will see a very different side.

Douglas, MacKay, Tex, Betts, Jacobs, JJ, Gibbs, Hartigan, and possibly Talia will all be gone.

The existing will begin this off season and then continue next with more players moving on.

3/4 of those guys shouldn't have a spot on our list after this year.

If we're still playing all of them next year as first choice players then we need to get rid of Pyke immediately.

Dominated by an opposition mid AGAIN (Gray) and not one of our guys can go to the next gear and match it.
Watching Jenkins behind the ball when we desperately needed a lead up was interesting to say the least, yet when we actually had a clear transition all our forwards are standing in the centre square out of position.
Seeds was not marked numerous times on the wing at centre bounces as port where using his man to stand on the edge of the square and come in from the back effectively using him as a +1 defender. NOT ONCE could we identify this and get the ball to Seed standing by himself!
Pyke might be a good coach but he needs to clear the deck around him.
Why the hell would you continue to pick blokes that let you down, it makes no sense.
Play the kids atleast then we can cop a loss for what it is.

If Jenkins wants to talk about "I expect to be picked" then he should actually put in a half decent performance after talking like that.

Didn't have a great night but I have a hard time bagging any of our forwards or backs too hard, other than missing a few gettable shots in the first half. This one rests entirely on the midfield. I can't recall EVER seeing our midfield get smashed that badly. Port weren't even running it through the middle, they were just casually jogging it through.

The complete non-contest offered by our mids meant there was no clean ball coming in to our forwards, just hack kicks when there was anything at all. And our defenders were just under siege - when their midfield is just sending it in completely unpressured like that, life is going to be tough for any defence.

i thought our defence held up pretty well, hartigan vs howard aside. talia was probably close to our best. they got absolutely no help from the midfield, who at times allowed rockliff and spp to waltz through and get it in quickly. something we struggled with all night.

You are kidding surely, the top tier players make an enormous amount of money for chasing a football around.
No digging trenches, 4 am starts or minimum wages while still on a AFL list.
Most will milk it until they are told to go, very few consider it a good time to walk away especially when at present they are considered an automatic selection.

Should have played on straight away for the snap ... had space and about 12 seconds on the clock .

I agree the midfield were badly beaten but our forward line as a cohesive unit is non existent.
Forwards are there to kick goals something very few of them are doing at present.

Nah, he’s risk averse, keeping Dougie and bringing back Mackay is pure him. You can’t change who you are.

I disagree. He doesn't seem to be that risk adverse which you tend to see when we have periods of bad results. These selections tend to only happen around the point we start to get comfortable again more than anything else, or have one bad week in an ok period which makes me think its other powerful voices (Campo would be one seeing he has a kingmaker vibe to him right now) driving it and Pyke compromising (the problem with selection committees really).

Equally to that, tactically Pyke is more than adequate. He's shown that he's able to reinvent when required.

Not the problem, though potentially is hamstrung by our problem areas.

Dixon just said it in the after game interview. He basically just said all they had to do was keep running and chipping it around and stop the Crows contested footy. Port knew our game plan, everyone does. It is not about a player standing up. The team game plan is about an arm wrestle and Port/Geelong did not want to come to the party. No one will now.

Pretty much, it is what happens to every club that tries this style eventually.

There is a reason it doesn't work on its own, and that we needed to expand on it desperately coming into the bye.

I'm still a little confused why Murphy made his kick for goal harder by taking the kick further out half time. Surely standing as close to the man on the mark with a 1 step kick makes more sense?
Murphy is no Charlie Cameron. Cameron would have kicked that in his sleep. Stengle has some skill and i would get him in over Murphy to see what he can do.

Huge moment in the game just before HT when Mackay had two team mates free in the forward 50 and kicked it straight to Westhoff.

We get a goal there, all the momentum into HT and who knows what happens.

Mackay is a liability and has been for a long time.
Yep , if he had any sort of vision he would have seen Milera at 1 o'clock working into clear space as the defenders moved the other way to cover ... it would have taken 2 more steps and a 35-40 metre pass resulting with Milera jogging into an open goal .

Yeah but it was on his natural side for a snap and his defender was on the back foot ... he could have taken 2-3 steps to open the angle . Not a difficult shot .

I find the lack of smart footballers in our team bloody concerning. Doesnt seem to be a priority obviously in our drafting and trading. Constant 2 metre handballs to a player under more pressure and missing free players when kicking into our forward line is just plain dumb football.

True, but we can blame Hartigan for his faults and his many mistakes tonight.

After Tex missed and they kicked 3 quick goals to go +14, Motlop took possession, dished off a handball then hared forward with a string of 3 of his mates, all at top speed.
Motlop!
Our blokes stopped and watched the goal that came. I knew then we'd lose but never expected the gutless capitulation that followed.
After Tex's goal 15 seconds into Q3, we scored 3 points for the rest of the game.
Hartigan was complete schnithouse tonight ... same as last week .

We got the pissweak Jenkins back and it was contagious.....

I am sick and tired of seeing our poor forward play. Shallow entries inside 50s and lack of movement from Tex and Jenkins to get into the right side of the ball to mark. Hard to explain, but a key forward should always get into open side of the contest to have more surface area of his body open to mark the ball. Neither Tex kr Jenkins do this. Tex used to. Hberg is great at it BTW.

The reason why our guys go to Eddie and Murph so much is because both of these guys know how to read the ball and get into position to receive it best. However they are too small to take advantage.

Clurey and Jonas gave our guys a bath purely because they read the ball off the boot and got to the spot where the easier mark is made. Where our forward should be.

It is basic forward play. Can somewhat forgive Jenkins for this fundamental flaw as it is something you learn as a kid. When he is in form he compensates for this flaw by being more aerobic. But Tex, c'mon man. He knows better. This aspect of his game has fallen dramatically in the past three or so year.

Came here to post same but might as well just quote instead. This is our biggest issue and has been all year, all last year, and all of the 2017 Grand Final.

Any illusions people might still entertain about us being able to carry both of them in the side on the basis of the one good effort either of them put in every 6 weeks must well and truly be dispelled now.

Opening minute of the third quarter sums up TeX's career. One amazing, unexpected piece of brilliance, followed by a total waste of an easy opportunity he should nail and then the opposition make us pay.

Himmelberg might still be raw but like McGovern did, he attacks the ball and leads up at the ball carrier. So does Fogarty. Jenkins and Tex play like small goal sneaks and we've already got Betts and Murphy playing.

They're better than us and younger.

By the time that we decide to play some of our talent, they'll have a full season to two seasons on them. You cannot catch that.

Port were ruthless, we were content. Our club will be on its knees in 10 years. Dark times are coming.

We sat back and let them out maneuver us at every turn during the off season - they traded to be in front of us, and we let them.

Handed them that game in the first half.

Port arent any good but they arent that bad that you can afford to kick 4.10 in a half. They will eventually make a side pay if you keep them in it which we did.

Showdowns always ebb and flow. Port were always going to come back.

We should of took our chances.

Tonight our captain cost us. He was lining up for 2 goals in a minute, at the start of the 3rd. He missed, they went down and scored. Then he tried to be to cute centering the ball. They go down and score again. Got thier tails up and we had no answer.

Poor disposal by walker cost us two goals, gave them momentum. Right after they were pumped up by thier Coach at half time.

Douglas
Mckay
Jenkins
Betts
Galluci
Seedsman
Atkins

Did nothing.

Laird
Smith
brown
Sloane
Milera
Murphy
Walker
Hartigan

Next to nothing

Crouch boys
Rob
Talia
Kelly
Greenwood
Keath

Tried.

Gold coast due for a win, help us get pick one

We'll probably play a showdown final, winner gets to go to Sydney and play GWS.

Absolutely pathetic. Murphy is the worst small forward in the league by some margin. Is not AFL standard. Running around like a blue ass fly and pressuring players after they have disposed of the footy achieves nothing. Playing players that are past it also achieves nothing. We were shown up by a rubbish side being led by the worst coach in the comp. Shithouse effort by a shithouse side. We should be embarrassed and changes need to be made.
