Review Showdown 47 Post Mortem - Port Federers v Adelaide Tomics

Hard to say many positive things about last night. Even in the first half when we were well on top, we have a very nasty knack of missing easy ball under no pressure and in turn leaking simple goals. 4.11 was arguably more unacceptable than our 2nd half purely because we did it to ourselves. I liked the idea of Smith forward to try and break the tag, didnt work but we did try, and I will always like Milera ahead of the ball. Other than that..... not much.

Greenwood - Best half of footy hes played all year, but yet again he falls flat, is it fitness or is it that hes hit the ceiling ??. Tackle numbers are deceiving, when youre that close to a contest youre bound to lay a tackle.... I wonder if we are better off letting him go.

Crouch - We know he isnt a defensive player, so he needs to make the most of the ball he gets. We saw those bursts at times but his footskills let him down. Not going to hang him but he does need to lift

Jenkins - Hindsight is wonderful, but his selection was iffy at best. Everything that could have gone wrong did.... even giving away a free kick when being held by 2 opponents. Will be better for the run but what he does next week doesnt matter too much.

Mrouch - Our "best" on a very dirty night. Should have nailed the goal running into the 50 and we are almost away.... but he didnt and we werent.

Gallucci - Another who wasted chances, and he did look lively before going off with concussion. On the edge.

Kelly - Putting together a pretty decent season. He's harder to beat 1v1 and doesnt have as many errors by foot, starting to learn his limits.

Sloane - Horrid, you know its a bad night when Rory couldnt hit the side of the barn door with most of his possessions.

Seedsman - Chocolate to boiled lolly in a week. He TRIED to take the game on, but he looks to have lost a yard. Hard to know what to do with him.

Talia - Did his job pretty well, didnt give Dixhead much space and have regained his marking form.

Tex - 2 goals in between a whole heap of nothing. Not his own fault though, 13 i50s in a half isnt a forward problem but what I didnt like what the now common one handed marking attempts. Like JJ he was being held a fair bit but it wasnt a good night.

Mackay - If youre an AFL footballer streaming inside 50 well in the clear do you A) take a shot at goal or B) hit a ridiculously difficult pass to a smaller opponent on the boundary ?? This is why every coach hes had has loved Dave, Hes an unselfish footballer, does the team things....... VERY poorly.

Hartigan - After some decent form it was a matter of time before we saw the normal Harto.

Brown - Another who didnt have his best night, though like Seeds he did actually try to run and create. We dont have an alternative though.

Eddie - The cliff is near, please Ed give us a few more moments to get to your 600th goal. Time for Stengle though, or McAdam.

Atkins - When you dont win the inside ball then a guy like Atkins is going to struggle. However, when you get the ball, can you please stop trying to be Dustin Martin, youre not.

Douglas - Richie I love ya, but its time. If we arent going to drop you, then you need to make the call yourself. So far away from it, its quite sad to watch.

Laird - Dont know why teams tag him, just let him run and he will give you the ball back anyway. Skills have fallen away dramatically, so much so that its to our detriment he gets so much of it.

Milera - Started the game on fire, but even the kick for goal was an ordinary kick. An assistant coach asked me the question when discussing defensive exits "Would you rather Junior kicking the ball or Kelly".... lineball at the moment.

Smith - Servicable, thats all. He really really needs to lift.

Keath - Yeah not awful, but his form has dipped. Needs to stop flying into his teammates.

ROB - Had his colours lowered for the first time in a while, not to matter he will keep learning. Wasnt awful by any means.

Murphy - Just doesnt do enough, we need a more dangerous forward option.

We are full of slow and/or lazy players and a heap that should be out to pasture.

We have some great youth, some great older talent ... But we have the mix wrong.

Some of the guys playing SANFL must be given a sustained go of it in the coming month. We have an easier draw, so playing the same old crap would be a huge mistake ... and hide the problems behind soft wins.

BTW, I don't think Power are the yard stick we should measure ourselves against. They are ordinary too ... But at least they have a handful of young players in the 22 with some upside.

Signs are not good. Pyke seems set in his idea of what it takes to be successful ... even though it has produced nothing but pain for us supporters.

Exactly, that’s what they’ll be saying internally. Once we can’t successfully compare ourselves to the mob down the road, all we need to do is pick a lesser comparison point and everything is sunshine and rainbows again.
They should also be saying a young port side isn't the coast.

Not this time, the one side we compare ourselves to just spanked us in front of a 50K home crowd.

Perfect team to lose to in that regard.

I disagree. He doesn't seem to be that risk adverse which you tend to see when we have periods of bad results. These selections tend to only happen around the point we start to get comfortable again more than anything else, or have one bad week in an ok period which makes me think its other powerful voices (Campo would be one seeing he has a kingmaker vibe to him right now) driving it and Pyke compromising (the problem with selection committees really).

Equally to that, tactically Pyke is more than adequate. He's shown that he's able to reinvent when required.

Not the problem, though potentially is hamstrung by our problem areas.

Pretty much, it is what happens to every club that tries this style eventually.

There is a reason it doesn't work on its own, and that we needed to expand on it desperately coming into the bye.

Campo is his right hand man and if Pyke doesn’t trust him, then why is he in such a position of influence? Pyke got the club into a GF in his second year and that brings power. You’re saying he chose to not use that and stick with someone he didn’t actually rate in their role? I’d suggest that is the definition of being risk averse. We all know that the on-field problems at the club start at the top with Chapman. But this continual excuse making for Pyke, who’s in his 4th year, is getting ridiculous. He has his crew, he’s their leader, he’s got who he wants or who he deserves. He cannot be isolated from his team.

The umpire said you can go up to the line but not cross it, Murphy thought he meant the boundary line

If that's the case he should be dropped (should be dropped anyway).

I don't play and I knew the rule...he's a bloody AFL forward and this situation was going to come up at some stage, how the hell didn't he know the rule???

Players who could get BOG but also ones whom we cannot trust and fail us more often than not when the heat is applied...Walker, Jenkins, B Crouch, Laird, Smith, Seedsman, Atkins. That's not a premiership team.

In particular, our midfield is a mess. Players who we cannot drop yet they all have massive deficiencies that collectively make them a poor midfield.

It is slow, poorly skilled, can't be bothered defending outside of the immediate contest.

We MUST install Milera as a starting mid, Jones needs to play every game and have mid cameos, pick 2/3 is hopefully a gun mid, and I'd give serious consideration to recasting Doedee or Smith as midfielders (Smith got 15 touches and a heap of metres gained as a high forward in first half yesterday so is capable of more).

What sort of photos does Douglas possess of the selection panel? His AFL career should have been finished 2 years ago.

So do we continue without that hurt factor and run with accumulators

The Crouch bros are what they are and getting hands on the ball is the first requirement so that is fine. 'Clearances' is a funny stat which doesn't begin to give a picture of midfield stoppage contests. Port showed us with their run and ball movement from centre working quickly INTO ATTACK. We need some explosive more direct pace to support the ball getters. We don't have that personnel wise, but we also certainly do not have it with Camporeales coaching.
I'm just an abserver (aren't we all) but I think the way we play now could easily be simplified. eg. Most of our effort at centre bounces is expended on structural defence and its negative flat footed imbalance. Attack the game through the ball a little more with more basic football and support running from outside.

Ooohhh
My head !
If only the Crows kicked as many goals as I had wines last night
So embarrassing getting beaten by a team that got beat by the Dogs
Watch us get done by the GC

Pick one at least would be safe then
Shame we need about 18 first picks
2 weeks in a row...

And gifting GC a win won't get them off the bottom of the ladder by season's end.

We will lose on merit.

Eddie went across and talked to him, he also talked to the umpire.

Either they both misread the umpire or the umpire got it wrong

What was clear is that the situation got away from Murphy and the process and execution of his shot for goal was shambolic and unprofessional.

We desperately need midfield speed. I like the idea of Milera and Jones going into the midfield as that gives up speed straight away.

What do we do with Sloane? Has he lost a yard of pace.

I’m just posing a question, if we are looking at injecting Milera and Jones into the midfield, a good idea mind you should we honestly look at trading Matt or Brad Crouch, should have we let Rory Sloane leave as a free agent last year?

What is the best direction the midfield should go in over the next 2 months and what will it look like round 1 next year.
Sadly IMO, I think it will look exactly like it did last night. Slow and very disinterested.

I know it happens after a loss but I couldn't help but notice the contrast of the athletic height and football ability and balance of the Port youngsters compared to our short, no-outstanding-attributes young players. We have none that look like strong aerialists with pace and goal kicking ability. The contrast is marked.

only watched the second half. lucky me

no run, no spread. one paced with no forward structure or pressure.

yuk
Exactly this. Our players couldn't get any separation from their opponents all night so when we were supposedly spreading so were our opponents.

Port played very man on man most of the game and zoned when they needed. We were mostly kicking to one on one contests, ball hits ground, Port were able to get an extra man or two to that contest, turn over, cut us up back through the middle, ad nauseam.

Couple this to our inept forward forays where we have three of our players flying for the ball to further ruin any chance the two or three Port defenders had already ruined, of any of our talls taking a mark, while the Port players who didn't fly, were licking the lips when the ball invariably came to ground.

Without doubt the Crows' dumbest and most inept gameplan and execution of basic skills I've had the displeasure to witness live.

Wines, Wingard & SPP

All looked top 10 future players early on. All stagnated.

Not with the current regime. Most of all I like their confidence, can remember Rozee listening in on an Eagles huddle, that's something you can't teach. We are probably running them into the ground though, did that before....

SPP bit early to call stagnated
