Round 13 vs Gumbies FFC @ House of Gumby

After the first bye of the season, the Swamprats headed to the House of Gumby to take on beez and his crew. After a false start two weeks ago, followed by a bye, this would be the week that the skipper would finally play his 200th game, in another MOTR featuring the Rats.
The Gumbies drew first blood before Rats rookie My Cotchin Rules kicked the first for the visitors. Both teams continued to trade goals, while RPCB was seeing stars after a heavy bump from GWS Goose. Fortunately the Port doctor cleared him of qoncussion and he was good to resume playing, as the Rats were leading 5.2 (32) to 4.1 (25) at the first break.
The Gumbies again scored first in the second term, as goals became harder to come by. After some missed shots by both sides, Ant Bear responded with a goal for the visitors. okeydoke7 then goaled to extend the margin, which remained much the same until the half time siren. By now the Rats were leading 7.6 (48) to 5.2 (32).
Once again the Gumbies scored the first goal of the third term, before HirdsTheWord responded for the visitors. The home side narrowed the margin again however as their continued to put pressure on the Rats’ defence. Unlike a fortnight ago, the Rats weren’t letting easy goals through however, and at three quarter time they were leading 10.6 (66) to 8.7 (55).
Unlike the first three quarters, the Rats scored the first goal of the final term after nice intercept mark to Power Raid resulted in another goal to HirdsTheWord. Again the Gumbies hit back with two successive goals to reduce the margin to just five points. The Rats needed a steadier and they got it through Okey. The Gumbies kept coming though and when HotPiesWithSauce goaled at the 22 minute mark, the scores were tied. The Gumbies then had what they thought was the chance to win the game but were beaten by the siren. A draw with both sides finishing on 12.8 (80)!

Round 14 vs Gold City Royals @ The Golden Throne

The Rats’ third successive away game saw them head to the Golden Throne to take on the Royals (for the second time in five weeks) in yet another MOTR. As always, it didn’t take long for the pre-match discussion to turn to okeydoke7 's bathwater.
In muddy conditions, the Swamprats got off to a slow start as the Royals piled on the first three goals of the game. A fired up Jewelsbon jagged one back for the visitors before the Royals added two more in quick succession to take the lead out to 24 points. Some great defensive pressure by Okeydoke resulted in a goal to edgie. At quarter time the Royals were leading 5.0 (30) to 2.0 (12).
Another poor start to the second term saw the Royals get the margin out to 30 points before a huge bump by Jewelsbon resulted in another goal to edgie. The Rats could not make inroads however and the Royals continued to score for the remainder of the term. At half time the Royals were up 10.3 (63) to 3.1 (19).
Okeydoke got things moving to start the third with a classy running goal, but again the Royals added two successive goals to take the margin out to 49 points. The skipper tried to lift the Rats with a running goal from the wing, but the Rats were unable to build any sort of momentum. At three quarter time the Royals were leading 12.3 (75) to 5.2 (32).
sataris provided a rare highlight for the visitors with a great defensive mark going back with the flight early in the final term, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Royals scoring at will. A dirty day for the Rats saw the Royals run out 48 point winners. Final scores were Royals 14.4 (88) def Swamprats 6.4 (40).

Round 16 vs Coney Island Warriors @ Underground Stadium

Having gone a month without a win, things weren’t quite getting desperate for the Swamprats, but a win was needed to keep the younger heads in check and the masses happy. After a long stint away, the Rats were finally back at home taking on the Wazzas. The Warriors resorted to naming their team one post at a time despite no one being interested to see the side they’d named, whilst Qurovision was proving a nice distraction for some.
okeydoke7 got things underway for the home side, scoring within the first minute. The Warriors responded with three successive goals before edgie hit back with a solo effort. The visitors kept coming however and got the margin out to 26 points before Okey scored just before the quarter time siren. The scores were Swamprats 4.2 (26) trailed the Warriors 7.4 (46).
The two sides traded goals to start the second term, before edgie got the home fans cheering with a brilliant solo effort. The Warriors wrestled back momentum and got the margin out to 16 points before another brilliant piece of pressure from Okeydoke kept the Rats in touch. At half time the Swamprats were trailing the Warriors 9.6 (60) to 11.4 (70).
The game tightened up in the third term as goals become hard to come by. Eventually it was Ant Bear who broke the deadlock in the 11th minute to reduce the margin to just five points. The Rats took the lead when sataris kicked truly but it was short lived. At three quarter time, the Rats were trailing by the smallest of margins at 11.6 (72) to 12.5 (77)
Okey had several chances to put the Rats in front early in the final term, before he finally succeeded with his third attempt. The Warriors reclaimed the lead before Okey missed another chance to take the lead back again. Scoring started to open up again and Ticky009 had the home fans cheering when she reduced the deficit to just three points. The game need a hero and the Rats thought they had one when another desperate defensive action from Okey saw sataris give them the lead. Unfortunately Tonga Bob had other ideas and stormed forward to kick the match winning goal and seal a ripping game of qooty. Final scores were Swamprats 15.9 (99) lost to Warriors 16.6 (102).

Round 18 vs Las Vegas Bears @ The Stadium in the Sky

Having a bye that wasn’t really a bye saw us come up against the Bears with only a five day break. The Bears themselves were in the same boat, so both teams got on with preparing for a Friday night specatular. A little bit of banter between old pals Ant Bear and Millky95 got things underway, before the Swamprats stirred things up by boldly naming their team at the start of the week.
The Rats got off to the fast start, kicking three goals inside the first seven minutes, with two coming from GremioPower. The Bears hit back though and took the lead in the 11th minute. The two teams traded several goals before JoshWoodenSpoon kicked the ball through the wrong goals, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Despite a seven point play from My Cotchin Rules, the Bears finished the team stronger and went into quarter time with a small 7.3 (45) to 6.7 (43) lead.
The Bears started the second term on fire, and pushed the lead out to 18 points. The margin could have been greater had they taken all of their opportunities. The Rats hit back through okeydoke7 and started to gradually claw their way back. The Bears responded with a late major, before Okey kicked another to bring the margin down to just six points when the siren went. At half time the scores were 11.7 (73) to 10.7 (67).
The Bears nabbed the first goal of the second half before a great steadying goal by Jewelsbon. When Okey kicked his fourth, the Rats had finally hit the lead. Both sides traded goals once again with My Cotchin rules putting through two in two minutes (with a Bears goal sandwich in there). The Bears had other ideas though, and they hit back hard, regaining the lead in the 13th minute. When regular full back Rodney Dangerfield ran up the field to kick one, it was party time. He enjoyed it so much, he added another as the Rats piled on a ten goals to one final term. The final scores were Swamprats 28.15 (183) def Bears 17.13 (115).

If a five day break seemed tough, the next round saw the Rats only have a four day break. At least we had the weekend off to sit around drinking piss, before preparing for a home clash against the Roys. The Roys, led by the indefatigable Mobbs were jovial as always, while the home side’s minds were on the job, knowing that a win would cement a top four finish.
The Roys kicked the first goal of the match, before a pair of okeydoke7 goals saw the home side take the lead. HirdsTheWord extended the margin before the Roys responded with another of their own. Quarter time of a relatively low scoring match saw the Swamprats leading 3.2 (20) to 2.4 (16).
The scorers might as well have gone out for a cup of tea to start the second term, as neither team was able to score anything early. Both teams were falling down at half forward, before Okey finally scored a major in the 11th minute. The home side then decided missing goals was more fun than kicking them before the visitors responded with a goal of their own. The Rats finished the term strongly with goals from HirdsTheWord and the skipper, stretching the margin out to 21 points at the main break.

When HirdsTheWord scored again, the game was all but done and the crowd were in raptures, celebrating the home side winning the double chance. The final scores were Swamprats 11.12 (78) def Roys 7.9 (51).
