Injury SJOGHCIU 2022

These days does anyone seriously expect Shuey to manage more than 2 or 3 games in row? I'm not exaggerating, I think he's up to around a dozen soft tissue injuries since the infamous "double hammy" game in 2020.

Saw a stat last week, Shuey/Yeo/Kelly have played a combined 11 games together. That's out of a total, by my maths, of 47 games since Kelly arrived. 1 in 4. Pathetic.

Just had a gutful of these fragile players. If you can't a) get on the park and b) stay on the park, you're just wasting everyone's time including your own.

Luke Shuey

2010 - 6 games
2011 - 25 (out of 25)
2012 - 21 (out of 24)
2013 - 14 (out of 22)
2014 - 20 (out of 22)
2015 - 25 (out of 25)
2016 - 23 (out of 23)
2017 - 23 (out of 24)
2018 - 20 (out of 25)
2019 - 24 (out of 24)
2020 - 13 (out of 18)
2021 - 7 (out of 22)
2022 - 4 (out of 7)

Apart from the beginning and end of his career he was remarkably durable

From 2011 to 2019 he played 195 games of a possible 214 games

He’s missed more games (23) in the last 3 years than in the 9 years before that

Like so many things at our club, our S&C staff haven’t dealt with life after covid particularly well because Shuey is by no means an orphan when it comes to missing games post 2019

And that's the problem we are facing. Well one of the problems.

Durable (formerly durable) players are now at the end of their careers and are now injury prone.

Shuey. Hardly missed a game for years, now hardly a game played goes by where he doesn't get a niggle or worse.
Gaff. Was MR Durable. Not now.
Hurn. Competed with Gaff for the most durable player award. Never missed. Now? Hardly plays at over 50%, and never plays close to fully fit.
JK. Imagine in 2010-2015 suggesting he be rested from travel because he looks beaten up. Now it all 'he needs to be managed', he 'needs a week off when it's a big travel game', and so on.

And with the demands of AFL and travel and the age of these guys, it's not going to get any better.

Hence why I reckon we need to swing the axe in the offseason.

Shuey - stripped of captaincy (a bloke who cant play more than half a dozen games a year shouldnt be captain)
Gaff - trade bait IMHO. The way he wants to play footy is not conducive to a winning strategy anymore, and I dont think he can change.
Hurn - retired
JK - retired
Yeo - reduced contract $$$ if we can swing it. Like Shuey the bloke cant get on the park and is approaching the end
NicNat - reduced contract $$$ if we can swing it. His knees cant hack it anymore and the fact that he can only play with extremely managed minutes means he is constantly sucking up rotations that other players need on gameday. Bloke's great for the publicity factor, but thats about it.
McGovern - dare I say it, trade bait. His massive contract is hurting us, he's in and out of the team with constant niggles and every man and his dog has worked out how to play him. Trade him while he has value.

Core of players we need to build our next list around:
  • Darling
  • Allen
  • Duggan
  • Ryan
  • Kelly
  • Rioli
  • Barrass

Go to the draft/ trade table and start filling in the gaps.

This is of course not even touching on club culture and the S&C/ medico teams...

I think that's a bit rough on Gov. He came back in career best shape and was dominant to start the season.

He's one of the few who looks like they did the work required during the off season.
Yeah, wtf? Been our best player this year and only out with Covid. Bizarre take.

Also, how is his contract 'hurting us'? Who have we miss out on/lost because of what he's being paid?

I've been slamming Gov for two years for being out of shape and now give him full credit for being an absolute Gun this season. He could be in line for AA if he keeps up this form. No way we trade him, we need him for leadership in the backline and to teach Edwards, Bazzo and Hough.

I think that’s why trade bait was floated. If we were ruthless and there were no other consequences involved (destroying club culture by actively trading star players), then you’d be silly not to entertain offers. Not going to be here for our next flag tilt and is still one of the best defenders in the game in career best shape, you’d get extremely good value to reset the list almost instantly. It’s 100% the right business move, just don’t know how well it’d go down with all the other aspects of the club.

If this were an American sport Gov would be on the table for sure. But it isn’t (thankfully) and he won’t be.

Yep, reckon we could go to the draft with that pick and get a young buck to fill one of the positions we will need to fill.....CHB! Might take 3-4 years to get him up to speed ...if he makes it.

Thats analysis is spot . Trade our an AA CHB in preak form this season and the hest onfield leader we have for a young buck that MAY make an AFL CHB in 3-4 years. Enticing isnt it

He messed up the summoning spell and has been dragged off to hell by the lesser daemon he was trying to summon to play mdifield for us as a top up.

f’ed his ankle and return date is unknown

Real shame. Deserves an opportunity, and to think he’s done an ankle at a time when he definitely would have got one. Timing is everything i guess.

Any idea when he’ll be back? And if he’s still likely to get a run?

When he first injured the ankle the club seemed more optimistic in how they reported it... but the rehab isn't coming on at all and we're keeping him as a "TBC". Bit of a mystery, but looks set for another medium to long term on the sidelines at a guess.

In our preseason games, he played well and was looking likely for a Round 1 debut. Had limited minutes but was pretty clean, moved well, was the only bloke in the team able to ride a tackle before disposing. We're in dire need of inside mids.

Even taking off my player sponsor hat, I reckon he'd likely get a game later in the year if he can get fit. Even if it's just to see what he can do in the seniors.

For Gov? You’d get an absolute bucket load of picks including at least one other top 5 pick. I’m not advocating it because there’s more to it than just his value but surely you can see how that makes sense from a business point of view.

A bloke that’s not going to be here for our next tilt for a bunch of picks that could be the first step to reload our list. If you were playing a video game you’d be doing it (nothing more to it than purely his value), but obviously we’re not and there’s more to it, which is why it isn’t viable

Article from the Journal of Sports Medicine about a strong link between frequency of player injuries/availability and leadership styles in professional sporting teams:

Brief summary:

Whilst its obvious that something is rotten up the line at WC, it's interesting to see that the huge amount of injuries the team is copping may partly be a by product of this as well.
