Phantom Draft Snoops Annual Mock Draft with explanations

Thanks for your work :thumbsu:

I am just interested in whether you think Vardy's clearly the best ruckman in the draft, or whether he's equal with Gawn. And are there any equal to these two or does it drop off after them?

If Vardy's clearly the best and Melb will go at 18, I wonder if we might consider swooping at 17.

Normally I'd say we wouldn't pay 'overs' but we do really need a quality ruckman this year much more than a good mid, which could be nice, but we can live without for a while.

as they stand at the minute then i would have vardy but ultimately i suspect gawn might be the one. just so much to offer at 206cm and pretty mobile. i think a lot of clubs will be attracted to him so you may find someone pay overs in what will surely be a 'needs based' draft moreso than previous years

Fair point...normally I wouldn't want my club expending a top 30 pick on a ruckman (and particularly not 17) but given our real need and the changing draft situation, I could live with it.

I wonder if the fact that we already have Blake and Simpson (2 big and not particularly mobile ruckman) might sway it against Gawn and towards a Vardy etc. Having said that I do agree with you that Gawn is fairly mobile so I'd be happy with him.

yeah i will be updating post november 10th when all delistees are known.

Thanks.

I also thought I'd point out Simpson has decided this week not to re nominate, so I think this makes it certain we will take a KPF somewhere. Not sure if this changes your phantom, but it seemed relevant enough to throw in there.

yeah it will - wont change the front end but i will change some picks around the back.

All

Given the number of changes post the 2nd lost lodgement and a very quiet Sunday avo I thought I would update my original. Ball has been added and made a few other changes. Have some higher and some lower as well as added some others that were on the cusp last time.

As always just remember its my view and I dont pretend to be an expert - just observations of someone who enjoys watching junior footy.

awesome draft!!

Jetta, Tapscott and Taylor would be fantastic!
Although i'd like to get bartlett in for 22 or 23, and ive got a feeling eagles are going to almost definitely swoop if he's available.

Apparently eagles arent interested in taylor :)() so maybe bartlett could be his replacement. Anyway a fantastic read, big improvement from your first and im really looking forward to your final version:thumbsu:

if essendon pick fitzpatrick over bartlett and gysberts i will shoot our recruiting manager in the head, we shouldnt get a ruckman at 24, maybe at pick 33 but barltlett and gysberts are to talented to pass up.

otherwise good draft, looks very realistic.:thumbsu:

# 6 – Sydney Swans
Gary Rohan / Geelong Falcons / 186cm / 79kg

This kid is a very fine prospect and could well be the best player that emerges from this draft. Has so much upside in him it’s not funny. I see him as ultimately being a similar player to a Kouta or a Goodes or more recently a little like a Stephen Hill. Will not need many touches to influence a game and with his superior fitness and explosive pace should really burn the opposition. The key will be to get this guy in 1:1 contests where his athletic attributes such as his pace and leap are going to enable him to dominate his opposition. Ball skills are good and is also capable of winning his own ball. The knock on him is going to be does he get enough of the footy? Like an Adam Goodes though – he aint going to need a lot of it to really influence a game though.

Others they would look at: If Butcher was still here I don’t know that Sydney would go for him. They have Mumford and Seaby for the ruck and keen on Bradshaw for a fwd post and have the improving White and Johnstone up forward. I think it will be the middle they will focus on so I would be thinking about Stevens, Lucas, Melksham and Cunnington. If I had to pick one I would think Cunnington or Lucas.
Then why Panos at Pick 14? Try putting Koby Stevens there.

ideally I think the Swans would want another tall fwd and if Panos was available they would jump. They can get a midfielder later but to get an A grade fwd and an A grade mid I think would be a good outcome for them. White will definately start as FF with Bradshaw next to him but Johnston I think will probably end up as a 3rd tall. In saying that it could easily work as a 2nd midfielder in that spot so happy to conceded 50:50.

bit concerned it was significantly better - didnt think I changed that much

Thanks - would think that Fitzpatrick would be recruited more as a Tippett like player. Fwd first but could do stints in the ruck

Snoop an excellent job you have conducted here, I read your last phantom aswell as this one and it's excellent, im suprcied I haven't posted on it already.
I 100% agree on Lucas slipping, I'm sure it will happen and he will end up and Essendon, Adelaide or Syndey (most probably Sydney).
Excellent job, and nice explanations.

# 54 - Sydney
Andrew Hooper / North Ballarat / 172cm / 78kg

Every year there is a bloke like Hooper. Dean Kelly ghosts for me are revisted but Hooper is different. Whilst its highly unlikely blokes of his stature get picked up this early (if at all) I think Andrew is very likely to go around here and he is a very much a Swans type player. Everything he does on a footy field says he is a chance to be very successful at senior level. Very very hard at the pill, wins a heap of contested footy, runs hard all day and has really neat finishing skills with a reasonably penetrating kick. One of the things that makes him distinctive is his sprints though. He is incredibly quick off the mark and would therefore present as a terrific Back pocket / roving type to man the elite smalls running around for many teams at the moment. I really believe this guy is in the Sam Mitchell mould and a club would do well to give him a go.

I was thinking I was the only one who rated this bloke at all. I could really see the swans picking him up late especially now that luke ablett has been shown what direction the exit is in.

I have had him as high as # 35 but let him slip a little. He is exactly the sort of kid Swans might take - esp given Ablett & Buchanan leaving.

I would be a little disappointed if we only ended up taking 1 genuine KP type in the draft. For that reason, I would rather we took Houghton at 44 rather than Reid, as I think we have a much bigger need for KP types rather than 3rd talls which it appears you have Reid pinned as. The only other change I would make is Sheppard at 19.

Come next Thursday night I would be rather pleased if we ended up with: Martin, Sheppard, Carey, Houghton, Ledin, Long & McDonald.

Great effort Snoops, easily the best and most informative Mock Draft.
Like many others I really rate Cunnington and would be happy with him or Morabito at 4 would be very pleased if the remainder of the selections went as you predicted.:thumbsu:

Good draft, though I think Christensen is a bit of a reach at 19, especially as he's so short, and we already have some short players I'd hope for some height, especially with midfielders often being so tall in today's football. I'd like Sheppard though, our backline needs some runners.

good post :thumbsu:

but i think freo will go taylor at 20 and west coast sheppard at 22/23

do you think ball is a chance to go to the pies at 30?

Nah I think that essendon will take him at #26. With mcphee gone they have the money and stated are keen.

frankly a bit surprised bc with watson, welsh, prismall in the middle they hard need another slower type. I think they need a quicker type to compliment stanton, zahar and winderlich. Last two aren't walk up starts for best 22 either.

Lions go after them and they to are keen as voss is hell bent on a premiership in next 3 yrs. But with rich, power, black, adcock they need some pace I would have thought as well. Thing for them is a junior might'en be the diff in their prem window. So taking Ball helps I guess. I would have thought. Wojo should have been thrown a big offer by lions as he would have given them pace.

Personally (and most my pie colleagues disagree) I would be just as happy with Harris at our last selection and take a good kid at #30.

Would be very happy with Moore at 30!
Easily top 20 quality in this draft.
See him most likely going at 15 or 14.
