Dougal is a big clumsy fall-over-his-own-feet m'f'r ... and he broke Max King.... broke him I tell ya... broke him

Ben McKay (on 6 years and $800K+) or Esava for an early 2nd rounder or keeping Dougal.

Honestly I can't see why people are complaining.

You are right Dougal is our best full back option at present, and he is servicable. But we need to work towards an upgrade if we want to improve.

That doesnt mean paying 800k for another player, it is hopefully developing a player to fill the role. It might take a couple of seasons to find an answer, but it needs to happen IMO.

This is the go. He's not the worst going around, but we would want to move beyond him when possible.
Whatever kids might be in the frame are a long way off, so much as to not be legitimate options right now so we just suck it up and see what happens after the season. I'll bet he stays on a lesser 2 year deal.

Howard just needs to play his role nothing more , Wilkie and Sinclair are the outlet along with Nas everyone else in the backline are there to hold there focal points , which includes Webster , Battle or whoever they throw down there.
To me our backline in fine , it will all come down to the midfield again and hopefully we improve in this area and it's going to be good to see how Windhager , Owens , Phillipou and Dow go this year in the midfield.

Sam De Koning was a gun defender at 20 years old..

That was with 2 years development under his belt and despite his great 3rd year, he still took a backwards in his 4th year.

It takes time to become a good, consistent key defender capable of playing on the monster key forwards. It's not going to happen overnight or with 7 weeks of training. We are fortunate enough that we have 2 mature options who were good/solid in the role last year that we can be patient with the developing options before throwing them to the wolves.

Same old story people want these kids to dominate men , it takes time especially for the bigger guys.
Max King is about the right age to to show his full potential , but I 'm excited for some of the kids we have like Keller , Camaniti , Heath , Van Els , they all have the ability to be good players.

Probably alone on this one but don't understand the preoccupation with trying to turn a young talented forward into a key backman.
Who knows how long Membrey lasts and we are screaming out for a dedicated CHF.

Hammer should learn the craft and stay a forward for mine.

I agree, but there's plenty of possible reasons.
  • We are also in need of CHB should Battle go down or leave.
  • Maybe they think it's his best position
  • Maybe just for his development
  • Maybe there's a different CHF in our future plans
Hammer is a work in progress. A stint in defense means nothing right now anyway.

Totally agree so many of the greatest key forwards had stints playing in defence - Riewoldt, Roughead, Gehrig, Longmire, Kositchke. Gary Ablett senior started on a wing. It can actually aid their development and drive them to become better players.

Yep. People are getting their knickers in a twist over nothing. We've got what looks like a good crop of kids, they'll play when and where fits best which will include lots of VFL.

A real understanding of what good defenders are trying to execute on field will only assist a good forward in his craft.

Short term I have no issues with a forward training down back. The magic will be to understand where a players long term value is, and at what point they should be given the freedom to play in their ‘natural’ position.

To me, rather than a natural forward as such, Caminiti strikes me as a young enthusiastic athlete willing to take direction and do whatever it takes to succeed. A Ross Lyon special in other words. If we were talking about a key forward drafted in the top 20 kids in the country, or a traded player, fair enough I'd understand the misgivings moving him back. But we're not, we're talking about a young kid into the club on a moment last pre-season. In my mind it's a smart dice to roll, to me Caminiti's best qualities weren't so much forward craft, as endeavour, application, aggression and body size. All things which could easily translate down back.

Didn’t Kosi also win his Rising Star playing at CHB ?.

Fev’s stint there against the G-Train didn’t go so well….

Alastair Lynch was the AA full back in 1993

Also Fitzroy leading goal kicker the same year kicking 68 goals!

Fitzroy Lions career (1988–1993)

Selected at pick 50 in the 1986 VFL Draft, Lynch began his senior football career at Fitzroy in 1988. He signed his first contract on 5 February. He was an intimidating player in defence, playing full-back and centre half-back. In his early years, his notable abilities were his strong marking (his outstanding aerial abilities were recognised when he won the 1989 Mark of the Year award) and heavy tackling. His titanic battles with key forwards such as Tony Lockett were highlights, and Lockett has commented on Lynch being one of his toughest opponents. In 1993, Fitzroy coach Robert Shaw moved Lynch to full-forward, where he led the club's goal-kicking with 68 goals in addition to winning the best and fairest award. Lynch also played full-back in the 1990 Tasmanian State of Origin team, the first Tasmanian team to defeat Victoria in 30 years.
