Review St Kilda v North Melbourne Rd 2 2018 Bad Friday

For the longest time I've been trying to put my finger on what it is we need to fix to become a good side, to find the root cause behind our 'almost', because it's felt for a couple years now that we were close. If only we'd developed our kids better or, if only we'd picked the right players or, if only we had a half decent ruckman. I've come to the realisation after today's game though that we're rotten to the core.

There is no single issue with St Kilda. We've consistently picked the wrong players in the draft for as long as I can remember. We've struggled to develop a player since Roo came through 18 years ago. We don't have a quality coach in any line from Head to Development and VFL. We don't play players in the right positions, hell we don't even play the right players. We don't go after the right players and we can't attract the right players. I couldn't describe our gameplan if my life were to depend upon it and I don't even think our players could.

This has, in my opinion, lead to the players becoming disenfranchised with the coach and I can not blame them at all. To have a coach so inept that literally not having a coach would lead to a better performance is shameful. But to also have players so soft that not a single one could stand up when it matters is nauseating. And to have a football department that lacks so much spine we can all predict their weak response to a tee is really the best representation of St Kilda I can think of.

I've never in my (admittedly short in relation) life seen such an abhorrent display from any team ever. Essendon after the drug scandal turned up more than this. Melbourne after their thousandth rebuild showed more than this. Even Gold Coast showed more than this in their first year of football. Collingwood's 16 point game a few years ago was better. All these I'm mentioning are better because they were all the worse teams. Today we entered the game with an objectively better list and got spanked like naughty children by an old woman on life support.

I can think of one player today who can feel slightly less shame than the rest, take a bow Jake Carlisle you showed a bit of class and at least attempted to show something resembling grit and determination. For someone who supposedly "has great hands" McCartin had more slippery fingers than a stirrer in a lard factory. For someone who could kick on goal last year Membrey was more likely to kick through North's goals than ours. For someone who is supposed to "provide grit" Koby Stevens disgraced the name of an inside midfielder. And finally for someone who is supposed to "develop our list", I don't think I've seen a worse coaching display under any definition of the term than Alan Richardson.

Not only is he incapable of displaying anything resembling a gameplan, he is clueless on matchday, shows no initiative regarding changes and resorts to the age old plan of throwing Carlisle forward to further expose our defence. Furthermore, he clearly can't develop players as developing requires playing in the right positions. Steele, Sinclair and Acres aren't forwards. Hunter Clark isn't a Half Back Flanker. Stevens can't even call himself a footballer after today's detestable performance. I've defended Longer for a while but injury or not he's clearly not up to it. Ditto Webster. Armo provided essentially nothing today except a player to push Steele, Sinclair, Gresham, Acres and co out of position. Bruce was deplorable and Brown was ineffectual. I didn't even realise Newnes was playing until I read the stats sheet and he should be dropped quicker than a cheetah can run.

This is the worst game of football I've seen St Kilda play and I'm honestly considering finding a new sport to follow.

In Richo's pre-game comments with BT he talked about the players looking each other in the eye before each game as if to say "I've got your back if you've got mine".

That went well then.
They were just avoiding eye contact with the coach because his gameplan is laughable.

We've been close to a flag three, maybe four times in my life (97-98; 04-05; 09-10; maybe also 91-92). Each time we missed out through some combination of poor luck and poor management. Meanwhile relatively unsuccessful clubs like Richmond and the Dogs pop up and win flags. Other historically unsuccessful clubs like Brisbane, Sydney, Geelong put the pieces together and win multiple flags. New clubs like Port and Adelaide have had plenty of success.

This is the fourth time in my lifetime that we've been seriously out of contention. Late 80s, mid 90s, late 90s/early 00s, now. The last few years have been fine, because it's a cycle and you have to go down for a while to come back up. (Unless you're Sydney, Geelong, Hawthorn.) But it's looking pretty likely now that this rebuild has been a bust, that we've got the wrong coach and wrong list. Start again. Again.

And you know what happens? The players cycle through, they might go play elsewhere, either way they get their $400k a year. The coach goes and gets a job somewhere else for similar money. The admin cycle through, go get a job at AFL House or something. The president and board wander back to their business interests.

The only poor ******s stuck with the club are the everyday supporters. We throw our money at it rather than getting paid for the privilege. We're the ones who have absolutely no say in how it goes, and yet the poor decisions of all these other campaigners effect us personally for years and years and years.

I'm not sure this shit adds anything to my life any more.[/QUOTE]

This sums up me as well. After dragging the 9yo through a 400km round trip to see this tripe, I just wish I could offer him some joy that I have never had, but no chance of that.

Touch rough on Brown he really dosnt give an inch live. I didnt relise the other Brown kicked 6

Line in the sand moment. Warne to come in as president, bring some colour back into the place. We are so boring and pc it's pathetic. Be stkilda again, colourful and entertaining.

Clarkson offered whatever he wants at year's end . Last roll of the dice. Otherwise hand back the keys and get on the spirit of Tassie

Richardson can not stay after this year, kids are stifled under him and that was meant to be his strength. JB,acres , Dunstan they have all come on slower than what they showed early. Paddy going backwards, he'll kill Clarke and coffield too.

Trout needs to go also, sorry but picking a bloke who feels hungover everytime he gets nervous due to his diabetes is just deplorable and amateurish research. It was a joke at the time, and only gets worse the more info we get on paddy

Move Richo, Ross, McCartin and Billings on, they are all to soft.
Bring in Lehman, Smith, Warner and Bancroft at least they will try and get the ball to do something we didn’t today.

"Pick good young men."

Our whole recruiting strategy.

We’ve been getting sliced apart by teams that use a kicking game from defence for years & still can’t defend it against a team that went at sub-70% kicking efficiency who beat us by 50+ points.

That is a structure & coaching problem

I paid good money to go today and was so disappointed in the effort. I keep saying it, our list is terrible and we have to play labourios footy to compete. We lack skill and quality and are young and inexperienced. We have a bottom 4 list still. Brisbane and North have more stars and Carlton is building a list to overtake us soon. Our defence is disorganised without Joey and our mids are all the same size and pace. Stuv is the only real point of difference. Steele, Koby, Dunstan and Seb are too similar. We should have got Hartung as a fill in even. Trout is a spud. I’m starting to think Richo is a full in too but Jesus couldn’t make this list play top 4 footy. We are a long way off finals in 3 weeks we will be back on to assessing top 5 draft picks and hope our one pick in the front end of the draft works out.

$60! What a waste of money for the garbage that we delivered today. The players looked lethargic and had no intent from the beginning but the optimist in me was hoping that we would eventually click and use our superior talent to overrun North. Not to be I suppose, and it's an important reality check to show the players that they aren't god's gift to earth. Christ, we have to be the most unskilled team in the competition, missing 2m handballs and dropping chest marks or handball receives. Whilst its depressing for us, it'd be quite comical watching as an opposition supporter.

Can Richo just stop ****ing around and use players in the positions they predominantly played as a junior. Give Acres, Steele and Gresham more midfield minutes; **** armo off; put sinclair back onto the wing and bring Dunstan back into the side. I don't know what Ben Dixon has said to Membrey, but he's completely ****ed his radar in front of goals- he didn't even make the bloody distance from 40m on one shot which is disgraceful in itself.

I'm all for giving McCartin time, but can he start actually exhibiting the traits that had him touted so highly. I can't recall another Key Forward renowned for their vice like marking drop so many sitters. And I'm sick of this rubbish that he is a good field kick- he rarely hits a target and often just plonks it on someone's head down the line.

P.S I think I'll spew if I see Richo try his customary Carlisle to Full Forward move again when the game is already lost. Was incredibly embarrassing to be a Saints supporter today. I'm as passionate as I'm sure everyone else here is, but not even I can find the energy to muster up a defence or any positives out of the game for the club after today.

Ball skills were atrocious.

Seb Ross was a shining light.

I'm not sure we've picked the wrong players so much as been really bad at attracting talent during the trade period.

I think it's a big problem that needs to be fixed not just for our club. Other teams are just handing out big payments to spuds because they simply don't have any stars. Now we don't have Riewoldt and Montagna I dread to think where our minimum player payments go. Geary making half a million a year (or more) would be a travesty but I'm not sure there is anybody more senior actually on big money.

On another note, it really is hard to blame our forwards when the ball use up the field was so horrific. It makes timing their leads into space and creating separation hard when kicks up the line are constantly being fluffed, in addition to not getting the ball lace out themselves.

And I hope Roberton starts to pull his finger out and return to last year's form as I'm sick of us getting swindled by 'one season wonders' who have great years when they are out of contract then turn to garbage.

If there is a year to be shit it’s this year... this draft is unbelievable.
Haven’t we traded the picks away for some fourth rounders last year? We are a stupid club. Can the AFL send us a recruitment manager, we shouldn’t be allowed select our own staff?

Positives anyone :rainbow::rainbow::rainbow::rainbow::rainbow:
You're not a Freo supporter.

Fans of all clubs have had these moments; North in 2013 with all the close losses made me Plugger35 level mad. For the sake of your club and small clubs like yours, Dogs, Melbourne and North, you just have to stick it out. Footy is a funny game and you can turnaround in no time and defy the traditional norms and conventions. Losses like this can make or break your side, so at least you can take comfort in that knowledge and go from there, whether that involves moving on the coach or that a poor performance is merely a blimp on the radar and not truly indicative of five years of poor rebuilding.

Harsh but fair

Finniss needs to go too. Squandering cash by giving Richardson an extension after it was very evident last year he couldn't coach .

He's turned the club into a PC flogfest. This is not stkilda, we are colourful, controversial, entertaining. Why change the entire fabric of the club because a dwarf was looking for a compensation pay out after a tiny match stick flame .

He has been at the helm which has turned us into the most mundane and snoozefest club in the land. North have gone past us, FFS

President out, Warne in with an axe to Richo and finnis. The playing list is not that bad. Some tweaking and someone that half resembles a coach with gameplans and player development in
