Twice in 2 weeks he has squibbed a contest when we needed him to at worst compete

If someone wants to pick and choose when they go they can go back to the VFL and do it there

Drop him

Absolute squib. Short steps tonight. Disgraceful.

2 weeks in a row #32 Steven Motlop has been involved in one on one contests.

He is an incredibly talented player with mercurial pace and skills. He is a veteran player approaching RFA.

He has also set he most abysmal standards in setting examples in consecutive games these last 2 weeks.
Senior players need to set examples by what they do. And then to not be given hardship over that not be acceptable is also not on.

I gave Mots shit after the first incident but chose not to post here about it as every player should, IMO, not be skewered for one bad act in a game.

He has 2 in a row. Thats a mindset, not an one off act. That is an example of selfishness and self preservation and showing younger teammates its ok to choose when you go and when you don't. And i'm sorry but an arsey kick off the ground and a few banana kicks into F50 dont get a pass from .e

To get off the shit list, earn your way off it. I hope this is an isolated incident and not a vein of entitlement.

I'll repeat what I said in the other Mots thread

"Twice in 2 weeks he has squibbed a contest when we needed him to at worst compete

And without doubt the biggest frustration with him is that we all know his best is absolutely elite, but the last couple of years he seems to have been drinking his own bathwater and thinks he can get by on less

He is like Cyril
He is a star when a team is flying

We should also be careful what we ask for as Varcoe is going ok, as for Mitch he never got going, and labumba is off with the fairies

Absolute gun of a player, and gets an unfair rap on here IMHO.

And yes, his job is to play outside, not inside so much.

But **** me, I can't abide sqibbing. When it's your turn, you have to set the example and put the body on the line.

Reserves.

The shirking of contests the past couple of weeks has been ugly. What's hurting the team more though is that he is no longer breaking the lines and taking the game on. Rounds 1-4 he was doing this and massively contributing to our attacking efficiency, even if it came in spurts. Along with Hawkins and Menzel those spurts were actually keeping us in games. At the moment he's not using his attributes to his advantage and when you take out the X factor, you take out his reason to be in the team. That's what is disappointing me more than him not putting his body on the line.

Great point - yes his station is outside runner. I have no issue not seeing him in and under extracting. That is 100% not his gig.

However, these were one on one circumstances where he could influence the contest, even just create one - and he would have escaped the vitriol.
But he shirked them both. Refused to bend over and pick up a ground ball and refused to fly to mark a ball. Both instances resulted in opposition free touches and eventually scores.

NOT. GOOD. ENOUGH.

He's not a gun player. He was a gun player over 18 months ago. Not any more. People need to wake up!

It's time to concede Meow. This isn't about who was right or who was wrong but this bloke is taking us nowhere. He's an absolute waste of space!

He's a gun mate ... It's those in charge of ensuring that he stays there that are to blame. They've failed him the club and the clubs supporters by tolerating undiscipline.

The minute he came back to pre-season training overweight was the moment he should have been playing VFL.

First four game block he was very good.

Next two he was so-so, but far from our worst.

Last night he was terrible.

His performances haven't been consistent at all, and therefore opinions of him shouldn't be rigid. The same is true of players I have been critical of - Blicavs and Mackie, who started the season well but have declined.

I also think he's being played out of position and should be a permanent forward.

Scott has failed him, no doubt. However, at one stage or another whether it be in life or on the footy field people need to take responsibility for their own actions. Motlop hasn't. Sure, people should have pulled him into line by now but it's only him that can change what's going on out there. No one else.

Yep, agree with that too.

But this is the thing. His inconsistent efforts are nothing new. They've been happening for a lot longer than just this season and supporters such as myself are fed up with it. I can handle losing but not when we have insipid efforts where players refuse to put their body on the line. The worst thing is that the two efforts that have been highlighted over the last two weeks wouldn't have even taken much courage. It's not like we're asking him to run back with the flight into an oncoming pack or anything like that. These were just acts that AFL players are expected to carry out on a weekly basis.

Yeah I know. Here's an example of my thinking: Guthrie has been just as weak, while also offering 10% the attacking threat Motlop does. Lang and Murdoch have hardly been bulls either, yet outside of the St Kilda game neither have given us much. Blicavs as often as not is offering little at all of value. Thurlow hasn't shown anything this season. So sure, drop Motlop. But just make sure you drop at least those five players first.

Parfitt is an example of a "Motlop type" who has brought the right combination of skill and endeavour to usurp Motlop's place in the side (based on the past three weeks). Given he's injured, alongside McCarthy and even poor old trier Cowan, we're running out of options to replace him. Do we try a Cunico? I don't know.
