Seemingly the drive of the training group came from the new draftees and 2/3 year players. I just didn’t feel the level of leadership to drive standards from guys like Sicily was on show. My bias says this list is possibly top 8, to do it needs Mitchell O Meara and Sicily to take the group with them, not sure at this early stage it’s been evident.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "at this early stage". I'm looking for a graduated build up and I think there is so much new at the club that it will take time for even the older heads to be become comfortable with the new set-up, likewise they will be pacing themselves. The great thing is that youth have no fear and it sounds like they are really attacking it.

Hey Linda, really appreciate the post and am really excited by your rating of those three and that the young lads are exploding (assuming this means they're demolishing the house).
I am curious though as to what you mean by you didn't see the senior players taking a step, and I'm curious as to how you'd measure that?

As far as leadership is concerned Worpel has taken a real big step. Yes Jom and punk recently came back but they have led the mids and fwd line along with shiels. Hartigan and Sic have been good in the backline and gunners stoppages. Impey just generally helping out.

In fact they had a leadership only training session for the second last session where there were no coaches and was instigated by the leaders.

Of the coaches apart from Sam hickmott is really impressive with his enthusiasm and work ethic with our young boys. The commando millitary style training is back at waverley.

Cant wait for January

Worps strikes me as the kind of guy who would only elevate his game upon being appointed captain and given extra responsibility, aka the reverse Cogs

Definitely think he's a very good chance of captaining our club in the next few years

I'm expecting (hoping) it to click for him next year, however, he's current output is a ways away from captain standard, IMO, though.

yeah that's probably the biggest roadblock, but I would expect his impact (not necessarily statistical output) to improve with the added responsibility of captaincy

Definitely agree. And his game suggests this as every time he’s given a bigger role in the midfield he steps up. His best games have been in 2019 with Tom or this year with JOM missing.

Would love to see more of Worpel and wingard together, they worked well together in the limited times they got to play in mids together

really hoping that he gets a crack at it this year.
That's really up to Finn. The opportunity for a young, unproven midfielder to break into the Hawthorn midfield hasn't been this high for about 10 years.

Where Clarko was looking for the reasons not to drop older players, Mitchell will be looking for the reasons to give younger players a go.

All Finn has to do is make a good case for selection and he'll be in.

What are the chances of making it to the mid season draft without a long term injury? If there is no one we really want then hold off to mid season but little strategic reason to hold off.
Someone who might burn it up in the VFL/SANFL/WAFL form first three months of next season?

The Stkilda game where we got smashed he was top 5 on the ground without JOM and Mitchell around him. Was 2019 form. Looks a different player when given more ownership of responsibility which suggests he has good leadership capabilities

For anybody following the boys on Instagram, Titch, Moore, CJ, Scrimshaw, Phillips and Finn went on a holiday together to Coolum before Xmas, but also completed a training session while they were up there.

DGB appeared to be having Xmas morning at James Worpels yesterday too. At least from the outside or appears as though this group is a tight one. Let's hope it shows on the field next season and they all play for another unconditionally.

Really enjoy the walk and talk stuff tbh.
Really hoping that Day can come back and play very early on next season, and really hoping that Sam's strengh's based approach to coaching works well for the young group.

I'd love to hear more about the balance between training for each player's strengths v's their weaknesses.

We've heard the narrative a few times now around the focus on developing strengths, but surely weaknesses have to be addressed in some context as well, right?

Develop your strengths
Acknowledge your weaknesses
