A little concerning if we want him to develop into a midfielder. Hopefully he has a big pre-season and hits the all you can eat buffets.
Or we have another wirey 400 gamer... He is only 20 so would expect this year and next after injury will be the years he fills out - aslong as he stays injury free all that matters

No issues if he's going to play on the wing or HBF. But some more size will certainly help him hold his own in the middle. Personally I hope we just play him on the wing forever though.

All this time we've been trying to decide which player we think Day can most closely emulate. Whitfield comes up a lot obviously.

But I've just realised he could easily be a right footed Stephen Hill, who was an absolute jet at his best but lost the last 5 years of his career to constant injuries. Day on a wing for his whole career could definitely match the output (and surpass it considering his high footy IQ) of Hill at his best.

That wirey 400 gamer, CHUBBS was referring to, played on the ball most of his career and dished out more than he ever received.

I’ll post more when I get home but it’s hard not to be excited by our draftees after watching that.

They broke the time trial up into three lots of 1 km today with a six minute break between each set and Josh Ward* was clear winner by the third run.

😍

*Mitch Cashion actually took the chocolates.

I bet you'll find them in Monkey's locker though...

The trial was a form of interval training with the breaks in between, and also broken up into 2 groups of players, so it’s hard to gauge who took out the trial.

Ward, Long, Maginness and Phillips the best of the first group. With Ward a clear and seemingly easy winner, Long coming in second with a gap to the rest.

With Serong, Pup(actually he was in the first group) and Moore the the best of the second group.

Denver and Noodle bringing up the tail, but the chatter was that DGB has improved on his PB.

Axeman, myself and HoudiniHuddo were trying to keep ourselves in check after watching the draftees do so well.
Worth remembering these kids will never be lighter, so they might have to contend with carrying more muscle in the months to come.

Day, Jiath, Jaeger, Downie all on the bikes, being managed into the summer. Everyone else was there apart from the two Irishmen.

There was a big cheer once they all got the boots on and congregated into the middle of the ground. Players sought out Gunston who was welcomed back into full training.

I left not long after the players had broken up into some contested work, where they’d deliver into the leading forward, and it was great to see Gunner on the end of our entries once more.

Very interesting report - thanks for putting it together.
Long is a big lump of a lad, so very impressive that he outperformed Maginness and Philips.

Training today Monday 6 December

Again, Channel 10 came down to film training. Got there at the end when they were back to running.

Sam Butler leading the packs with Finn followed by Worps. Special mention to big Lynch who was 5th and kepping up.

Ned Long and Ward... oh yeah... good ones there!!

At one stage they were calling out groups to match up and the coach called "Ned" and Seamus" not to bunch up together and then he had to amend that to "Big Ned" or "Bigger Ned" to distinguish between big Ned Long and Bigger Ned Reeves.

Not certain, but he looks trim and fit.

Been a bit of talk of Ned being a bit sluggish and lumbering but he must be an ok runner to do the times he does. Who needs a good sidestep when you are 194cm and 91kg …… just keep running straight as fast as you can young man and good luck to whoever stands in your way!
Yes a Lomu sidestep indeed

Sicily was not the only player of note to take to the track at the Hawks’ first official day of pre-season training on Monday. Jack Gunston, who managed only one match in 2021 because of serious back issues that required surgery, was also in action.

The lean Gunston remains on a limited program but enjoyed a significant moment at training.

“Jack did some ball work today for the first time which was great,” Mitchell said.

“The boys all got around him which embarrassed him a bit, which was good as well. But he is certainly running fast and is getting more involved in what we are doing.”

Top-10 draftee Josh Ward is ready for senior football and his athleticism was again on show as he and fellow draftee Ned Long won the two-kilometre time trial.

gunston Sicily day. Makes a huge difference obviously

the age call siss provocative. I’d call him provokable (up till now ) there’s a difference
