It’s the chase down pressure we lack up forward. With Cyril/puopolo defenders could never relax even when clear due to the real/perceived pressure. Kosi can do it as is genuinely quick in a straight line, but Lewis, BB, gunner, Moore, Breust aren’t chasing people down who have a gap on them - yes can get guys through smart positioning around the contest (which is important) but not winning a foot race.

Can see why Jai is being rested up forward as he moves well and a real physical presence. Seamus/butler have the speed, we’ll see over next few seasons if they have the defensive side as well.

Thank goodness we didn't get Sturt. Is way behind in his preparation according to Freo reports. Virtually hasn't played for two years. Sounds like a Blues player for me.

Different players. Hawthorn targeted Lachie Shultz this off season, not Sturt. Shultz would have come for nothing as a free agent as he had been previously delisted before having his break out year in 2021. 23 years old, high pressure forward who kicked 22 goals. No world beater but for free would have been a good acquisition to add pressure to our forward line.

Alas, he opted to stick with Freo.

The context of his name coming up again of course is that Hawthorn are obviously looking to add more players that can apply forward half defensive pressure (hence Shultz, Butler and Adducci)- which I agree has been a list need since Rioli's and Poppy's retirements.

No need to tackle and pressure to lock the ball in if a big forward clunks it.

Whilst this is of course true - the fact is contested marks by a key forward are pretty rare these days because the game is set up to prevent them (congestion and loose intercepting talls like our very own Sicily). Carlton's Harry McKay was #1 in the comp for contested marks last season and he averaged less than 3 a game from his clubs 50 inside 50's a game.

Hawthorn averaged 49 inside 50's last season and less than 10 marks inside 50. This ratio is fairly standard with the best side at inside 50 marking in the comp (Melbourne) averaging just 12.7.

Due to this fact/gamestyle/oppo set up, key forwards are taught (and lauded) for an ability to bring the ball to ground, given they are typically outnumbered in the air. As such, forward lines do need to maintain a balance and providing defensive pressure is a key component of that - to turn non marks into scoring opportunities, to retain the ball in the forward half and to cause turnovers up the field.

Looking for a forward 6 with the exact right mix is good fun but a bit pointless come game time. We don't maintain the same 6 forwards for more than 5 minutes at a time. We might deliberately go too tall and when the oppo sort out their match-ups we change it and go small. Interchange rotations, forward press, defensive press, the players up forward are in constant flux/rotation.

The best 6 forwards on paper is basically just that.

Personally -

HF: Breust Koschitzke Wingard
F: Gunston Lewis Moore

I do hope we don't use McEvoy forward too much.
Well I doubt McEvoy is going to ruck more than he has before at his age.

Re McEvoy in the forwardline - the guy can clunk better than most on our list and he has a good all round game at his size.

+ he is our Captain. Getting this bunch to work together well is a good place for him to be in my view.
Not to mention his goalkicking accuracy.

Of those to have kicked at least 50 goals, he is the most accurate player to ever pull om a Hawthorn jumper!

League wide, he is the 8th most accurate of all time (again, min 50 goals), 2 spots ahead of Plugger (if we make 100 goals the minimum, Big Boy is the 3rd most accurate of all time).

He certainly makes his opportunities count.

Nash usually speaks very well. If he cements his place he will be a leadership group and even future captaincy candidate.
In the bulldogs game towards the end of last season, whenever a goal was scored and the players would meet in groups before spreading for the next bounce, Nash was calling people in and leading some of the group chats.

It's another positive that in all the good news about developing players from the intraclub Saunders wasn't even out there. Got a good band coming thru and we can add him in when he gets out there.
