Kossie is quick, but he’s not able to provide consistent pressure.

Moore is above average defensively. Last year we played a gameplan conducive to high inside 50 tackle numbers. Long high kick to a pack and get numbers around it. A contested situation is where Moore thrives.

But if we play a taller forward line he will have to do a lot more run and chase to prevent teams attacking off the HBF. Something he isn’t as good at. And to be fair, it’s doesn’t exactly play to Breust’s strength either as he fares a better in the contest also.

If we have an extra small forward they can cover more area together and give the opposition less free space.

Brocky might massively improve this year but we can’t just expect it to happen.

Adding Wingard in would help which is why I feel our forward line would be better suited to 2 talls and 4 smalls.
Kossie is big and quick, gives good effort which is good for someone who is a key forward.

Yes but you'll always, always see Moore chasing. His defensive pressure is very very good.

Brocky has the pace to really put on pressure so i think he'll be good.

Wingers will spend a fair bit as a fwd/mid.

It's good

Gunston, Lewis, Kossie and Macca with Wingard, Brocky?, Breust, Moore.

I’d personally consider Gunners a tall. At least while he is getting back into it. I’m not expecting him to be pressuring like he used to, at least early on.

At his best though he could apply very good pressure.

I would consider Gunners an in-between.
I cant see that he doesn't play forward plus there is Bigboy, Kosi and Mitch who are all talls.
I actually don't think that we have enough quality smalls to play four forward.

Maybe its 2 talls, Gunners and 2 smalls and perhaps Wingard depending on who our opposition is.

Moore looked a step above most blokes on our list from that 9 minute highlight package. Incredible to think he was almost delisted 18 months ago.
He was very lively and dangerous in the intra. I am expecting bigger things from him this year baring any injury.

I think you pick your best six forwards regardless of height. If it turns out to be McEvoy, Lewis, Kosi, Gunston, Breust and Moore, it could work. McEvoy and Lewis provide the key marking targets with Kosi and Gunston as options. Breust and Moore attack the loose ball and apply defensive pressure when the opposition has possession. Kosi gets run down duties when a defender breaks free. Gunston is allowed to roam, creating space for someone like Wingard. There are also viable options with up to four small/medium forwards (Brockman, Wingard, Breust, Moore, who are all very capable overhead). I reckon the priority is quality/form over structure. We just need a flexible enough game plan to accommodate different structures.

I'm mostly the opposite here. I don't want to carry inadequate players but primarily I want a forward line that can put a lot of pressure on opposition defenders at ground level. If we are going to play a more attacking game plan, that necessitates our mids taking more attacking positions than under Clarko. This means when the ball is turned over when we go inside fifty (as most entries are), we need to apply pressure immediately as our mids will not be in the same sort of position we are accustomed to to defend the defensive fifty. A lack of forward pressure would likely hurt us more with an attacking game plan than a defensive game plan. Brockman has to play and I'd love for Saunders and Butler to get some time on the field too at some point once they are fully fit.

I think it depends on how agile Gunners will be when he gets back.

I definitely agree that we don’t really have enough small forwards ready to go. Hopefully some of Saunders, Butler, S. Mitchell etc. can put their hand up at VFL level.

And we have 4 talls who are more than good enough to play AFL. If we picked more for balance there’d by some very unlucky players.

I agree we will likely go with 2 talls + gunners. Our forwards are going to have their work cut out chasing defensively.

Heard Harvs say in a video on Facebook the other day that apparently we have a third practise game against Carlton?

Anyone know anything about that? Or is it behind closed doors?
Closed to the public. Carlton board thinks it may be 6 or so stanzas so all the squad get a run. It will be on social media, which I am not.

We are definitely looking to add more forward half defensive pressure with the attempt to pull a swifty with Freos Schulz, the recruitment of Sam Butler for whom its a clear strength and Adducci getting a shot at our list. With that said, I wouldn't underestimate Mooreys defensive contribution. He was above average for pressure acts in 2021 and was top 7 in the whole league for tackles inside 50 (easily #1 at Hawthorn). I know you said it's different (more contested than chase down) but Moore definitely does his bit to lock it in and generate turnovers.
Thank goodness we didn't get Sturt. Is way behind in his preparation according to Freo reports. Virtually hasn't played for two years. Sounds like a Blues player for me.

Last season, not only did our forward largely not mark the ball, but they let their defenders mark it and rebound.

That doesn't even give our smalls A CHANCE to do something at ground level. I don't mind the extra height up forward as long as Gunston is there.

It completely sucks that any AFL club would not allow supporters members to come along to watch some football after all the games we have missed
It’s not the clubs, it’s the AFL.

This is the competition removing all risks of Covid impacts where possible prior to Round 1, so that the games can start when they should.

Even our CEO can’t get into the game.
Match day staff and players only.

Looking for a forward 6 with the exact right mix is good fun but a bit pointless come game time. We don't maintain the same 6 forwards for more than 5 minutes at a time. We might deliberately go too tall and when the oppo sort out their match-ups we change it and go small. Interchange rotations, forward press, defensive press, the players up forward are in constant flux/rotation.

The best 6 forwards on paper is basically just that.

Personally -

HF: Breust Koschitzke Wingard
F: Gunston Lewis Moore

I do hope we don't use McEvoy forward too much.
