Autopsy Swans lose to Dogs by plenty

Yesterday was an absolute smashing.

Beaten badly at CB and stoppage, even though Grundy won the hitouts. Could barely stick or break a tackle, hand passes all over the place and panicked kicking when we actually got the pill.

No rebound from defence. Barely generated a F50 entry from HB with no one running. JUH absolutely murdered us and did as he pleased.

Forward line dysfunctional. No answer to 3 tall Dog defenders who intercepted at will. Have not seen a Swans forward line look so impotent.

Hoping to at least see improvement against Port as our rebuild towards finals needs to start, otherwise we will just be making up the numbers.
Who's the forwards coach ? J McVeigh ?
We need to get Dermie or Lloyd up there for a couple of sessions to show leading patterns etc , apart from L . Mac at times no one else does , So Heeney back forward as well because he can lead

On what we've seen recently, I just assumed we didn't have one.

Must be so easy to defend against at the moment, with barely any movement and leading. At very least, getting one forward to lead to one side, and one to the other could make a huge difference. Even if we must continue with the 'bomb it at will' tactics, at least by doing that we force the opposition to split their defenders up, and can stop every contest being a 10 on 10 slog fest.

Seems so simple.....

This is where Reid would've been handy as he did compete and fought for it on the ground , sad really he's not an option

Yep exactly.

I don't think any of our three talls in isolation are awful at ground level when it gets to that point (although I have continuing questions around Amartey's work rate). But so often they are all in the same cupboard sized portion of the ground, and then its just a trio of giants all competing for congested space, where big guys, bar the very best, are all but useless.

We've got good enough players (even with our injury concerns) to be kicking a lot more to players on the lead than we do. Maybe you know, we should actually try it occasionally. The other thing it can also help with is it in general (not always) makes it much harder for the opposition to rebound quickly.

Sure, sometimes the forward gets outmarked and off they go. But more often then not, if the forward can halve the contest, all the defender can try and do is bring it to ground, or dare I say try and punch. Sometimes that will open play up, but often it'll either lead to the ball being turned straight back over, or alternatively to congestion and a stoppage. Either way, a big win for the attacking team.

At least we need to try it enough to make it a viable option to stop other teams just having their designate 'big guy' defender that gets to have a field day of catching practice. You don't even need to do it that often - just enough to put doubt in the minds of the defenders, so they know they just can't sit there all day and mop up at will. Make them accountable, and suddenly not only will we find we start getting a return out of the big guys again (even if the big question of set shots comes to the fore again), but we will also find that bombing it in will work sometimes.

At the moment, it is all so predictable, and with goals from our midfield group dried up because they are collectively being sorry arse lazy buggers, we don't look like scoring heavily or quickly.

Saying all that - footy is an easy game to watch from outside and critique. Making it happen on the field is something altogether different of course.

For all the negativity to guys like Mcdonald Amartey and Mclean

Watching Lloyd analyse them, and he is showing how impossible their job is, our midfielders from like 70 out just hold the ball and bomb, and then they stand and watch it go forward , our forwards could be Carey, Lockett and Dunstall and would be up against it,

More damming footage is defenders guarding grass and allowing one on ones at the other end.

But yeah bomb to Mcclean etc and All the smalls hover away and if he cant take an impossible mark the 4 dogs around him clear and kick over the mids just driftng.

Where the extra pass to half forward gone, even when we had Buddy and Tippett when the **** did bombs from 80 out ever work for this side, its the same people, Warner, Gulden, Mills just running around in no mans land. No wonder Adams and co kick like shit, no ****en targets working. If you are going to bomb long, then man the **** up and get ready to crumb, not hover for a short hack exit kick and hope for glory.

Yep agree with this, if Buku Khamis didn't have butter hands on the day we would have scored what 3 or 4 goals. Our short kicking game was non existent and thats why Hayward presenting was crucial and it just didn't happen we needed more leading options and movement

Chad at HF might be a good option? Can lead, take a mark, is a threat anywhere from 60 out

All I can say is, I am so sorry guys. I bought a Platinum membership the week we lost to Freo and we haven't looked the same since

My uneducated guesses

- no real plan b, if we cant get run going we stop a lot and look lost and try to control it, there is no dare when sides pressure up, we dont seem to want to kick long to targets

- players playing hurt and cant run as hard as they should be so are not in the right spots

-. mental - we can't start well and theres a here we go feeling now/ cant handle pressure, big finals/ being hunted not the hunter, losses in a row - just ****ed in the head

- somethings fractured the group----- gulden seemed shitty with the world today, warner not trying, Parker sub even as someone critical of I was surprised.
That last is my pick. I feel as if there's an undercurrent and the guys aren't playing for each other the way they were up until the GWS game. That was the tipping point when we lost the magic. It's not something that can be forced.

They didn't look too pumped up waiting in the race before the game , oddly they seemed to be waiting there for a few minutes , does anyone know why they were , surely they weren't waiting for the cheer squad ! No one seemed to be saying anything , just looked like why the F are we standing here

Thats the thing we have to take away something out of midfield because we have noone to challenge Hayward for that medium forward spot so he has to play even when injured or not 100%

I just don't get how an opposition can set up a wall and then blakey just stands there with nothing to kick out too. But we have like 10 swans behind the wall?

If we want to run and carry why are we standing still? why aren't they working harder?

Dogs should have kicked straight and won by 80 odd, make no mistake this was a flogging.

We were stopping so often to look for options that didn't ever eventuate. If we aren't a contested side and want to run, where are the runners? End up with Gulden just running right to the boundary edge screaming for the footy.

But how often did the camera pan to behind a swan looking up the field with just no options at all.

Eventually they go long to a Dogs tall.

Adams disposal cops it for sure but he isn't alone
Gulden and the boundary is becoming as an annoying a duo as Lennon & Yoko.

He's getting well beaten in the midfield. I think moving him out for periods of the game at least gives the opposition something to think about. Also, we're going into games at the moment with Adams, Parker and Mills who I think are all AA mids. So perhaps they need to lift and start dragging our team over the line during this tough period.

Fair its hard to say what to do because we have like what 4 guys in form if that. Grundy, Roberts, McCartin & Lloyd are probably the only ones doing anything regularly for the last 3 weeks

Just thought English worked back took a few massive marks that were telling
I could have been out there yesterday and I'd have taken marks against our mob, they've completely forgotten how to spoil or even challenge for a mark.
It did my head in last week with the lack of effort in the marking contests against Brisbane and it was no better yesterday.

Scary part is Dogs won it in a quarter then I reckon cruised around for 3 quarters.

Even if you add Papley Rampe Mcinnerney Rowbottom back in for a rematch , the Dogs can play a lot better yet if challenged imo

That’s what happens when we play soft for a quarter every week we got away with it for 10 weeks

Wonder what they thought at half time, were they surprised how easy it was

Cam Mooney said after the Freo loss that we were not playing that well, and that while the coaches would be stressing various things they don't sink in, because the team is winning. I get the impression that the losses of 1 or 2 points were shrugged off as just bad luck. This hammering hopefully will be a massive wake up call.

Well I don't recall seeing Chad smiling against the dogs, so there's that. Perhaps the penny will finally drop.
The only people at the ground smiling at any time after about 3.22pm yesterday had royal blue in between their red and white 😞

I wasn’t smiling. I paid $9 for a carton of eggs after the game. I was more pissed off about this than the game itself. Pains of living in a small town when it’s late
