Swans Reserves 2008 Season Thread

I think it's fitness he's lacking, not match fitness per se. He's just as likely - if not more likely - to get that via a tough week or two on the track than by playing. From what I've seen of him, if and when he's fit enough he'll be pushing for a senior berth regardless of how many reserves games he's played. Whether he is seriously in with a shot depends on the fitness of Schmidt, Laidlaw, Malceski etc, who'll also be putting their hands up.

But he's probably half a season or so away so maybe it makes sense for him to take his turn now rather than later. Still wish they'd rest him for a Canberra game though.

I can count 15 listed Swans and that's the limit per game. So maybe it's his turn to rest. Bit annoying that they're resting him for a home game though - if indeed he is being rested - since it is him and Murphy that I most want to watch.
WHAT ?!

Watched him play in Round 2 and was really looking forward to do it again .. guess I'll have to busy myself with Murphy & Davis

I think the limit is 18.

13 on the field + 5 on the bench.

16 listed players played last week.

Have been looking for an article that tells us what the rules currently are. 13+ 5 doesn't make sense with a squad of 22 - unless the team is limited to only 17 on the ground. The 13 on the ground is confirmed by this

but I had thought the total number had been brought down from 18 last year to 15 this year. I think there was something in the off-season Swans magazine about it - not the most recent one but the one before that. But I can't find my copy of it, and it's possible I've thrown it out.

The extended to bench to 24.
liz check out the AFL Canberra Round 1 edition. It's all there in gory detail.

anyone know what the progress is of jake orreal, the big Caravan?
It's an interesting one.

Either
a) He's such an unknown player that the media doesn't give 2 cans about him and he's been injured. or
b) The club doesn't even think he's ready to play at AFL Canberra level.

I don't think he's ready honestly .. Footy's not a hard game to get a hang of if you have a pretty good background in basketball and other contact sports, but i guess he's just working on making use of a different kind of ball.

Expect to see him out onto the field before the end of the season, at least.

If, as rumoured, there is late change/s to the seniors, perhaps Vespa may come in if he is indeed being rested.

Guess I'll find out at 03:11pm when I settle my arse on a seat at ANZ.

No Vezspremi, anyone know why????
Just an FYI for anyone not knowing. This guy played in 49 today and he is a swans scholarship player. I am thinking from somewhere south of campbelltown he plays with some people we knows son.

He seemed much shorter than I thought he would be. Kicked a nice goal.

Davo kicked 8, was trying to come up with a nice headline but just can't get it right.

Davis 8 - the (Mag)pies off?

I've written some comments over there, and we expect to have a match report up sometime later today.

But for anyone who isn't inclined to visit I will add some comments here.

Fantastic game to watch, or the second half at least. It took the Swans half a game to get any coherence into their structure, not helped by the number of top-ups who were generally of a much poorer standard than the top-ups I saw last season. Skills were very ordinary - not just the top-ups but several of the Swans players too. Belconnen took it up to them physically and it was only some superb kicking at goal from one Nick Davis that kept the Swans within striking distance.

In the second half the Swans looked like they'd had the gauntlet thrown down to them to rise to the challenge, and rise they did. Even many of the top-up players rose a level or two in skill and confidence. Once they finally hit the front I think it was clear that they weren't going to let go, though they did concede a goal to have a 7 point margin brought back down to a single point. Two more goals finished Belconnen off and the final margin was 13.

Davis was in a different class as a forward. If it weren't for developments later in the evening I am not sure whether what he did would have earned him a senior recall. As it is, I'm not sure Roos has much choice. But he's said that he's not interested in how many goals Nick kicks, just in his work rate. So it seemed quite odd that they left Nick one out in the goal square for so much of the game. He did have short stints on the ball but played predominantly as a forward.

And as a forward it was a sensationally skillful game, kicking razor straight from close to 50m on several occasions. In addition to his 8 goals, he set up at least 4 more, and three of those were high quality assists.

As for other players

Bruce - workhorse all afternoon. Certainly one of the best 4 quarter players. Still a bit rough round the edges but I can see his potential in a Ryan O'Keefe kind of role.

Currie - very good, I thought, in the ruck, though he looked a little awkward around the ground until the final quarter. Dominated at centre bounces.

Laidlaw - took some time to get going but his second half was very very good. He's had quite a long lay-off with his knee injury but give him a month or so to get his fitness up a bit and I expect him to be challenging for a senior spot. In, one super piece of play he paddled the ball in front of him along the boundary line for what must have been half the length of the pitch, outrunning everyone chasing him, before centering the ball to set up a goal.

White - played at FB. I thought he was beaten early by his opponent but his second half was brilliant. Took some imposing marks and his lightening rebound from the back was instrumental in opening the game up for the Swans. He and Murphy together are an exciting combo to watch. Second best game I reckon I've seen him play.

Murphy - still clearly grappling to come to terms with the game. Made mistakes, like trotting across the mark to give away a 50m penalty and a certain goal to Belconnen. Tried to take players on and got caught with the ball. But boy, the good stuff is droolingly good. And you can see palpable improvement, not only from week to week but within a game too. Kicked one goal, with a very secure shot from about 40m out, and was instrumental in one of Davis' goals too. And he's already showing some leadership out there, trying to marshall troops in the back line to cover opponents.

Smith and O'Dwyer - quietish for 3/4 but both came to life in the final term and played a significant hand in the Swans' victory.

Those were probably the pick of the listed players. Terlich and Beckmans still have some way to go, DOK did a few nice things but isn't getting involved nearly enough, Brabazon worked his butt off but his disposal was generally very poor, Faulks was pretty vanilla in defence and certainly was outshone by both White and Murphy.

Great report Liz, I thankyou heaps!

Great news about Murphy and White. Looking forward to their development and improvement in the future. They are so massive.

I agree on Murphy he wanted to run and run and run and just tried to do too much at times he is awesome to watch......I also found it interesting he was getting the boys going cheering them on.
There was a goal in the final quarter when we were on the come back not sure who kicked it but davis murphy and the blonde that kicked it all went in for this massive group hug.....with the smile on davis' face you would have thought he had won a premiership LOL.

White I wasnt over impressed with. He certainly isnt ready for the big boys yet.
