My 22 -
I'd line them up as -
B: Rama Michael Fletcher
HB: Dempsey Ryder Nash
C: Houli Watson Lovett
HF: McVeigh Lucas McPhee
FF: Reimers Lloyd Davey

R: Hille Stanton Hocking

Int: JJ Laycock Jetta Dyson

Emerg: Monfries, NLM, Lonergan, Gumbleton
I'd have that team except for JJ out and NLM in. also i'm not sure if kyle is in our best 22 just yet. i love the kid, but he is still a bit raw. i'm hoping though that one of he or sammy gets a gig in round 1

He seems a bit more settled this year, going by his recent NAB form. Is your view on another development year due to competition in gaining a spot in the senior side or purely due to him not being completely ready for an AFL season?

I've penciled him in for round 1, however a number of players are pressing for a spot.

He's running in straight lines and that's the most impressive thing about his preseason. Playing at half back has been a good move for him.

I just think we'll rotate a few young blokes, actually a lot of young blokes through the side. Myers, Pears, Dempsey etc will all get their chance and that means the likelihood of a 2nd year player playing the whole season, rather slim.

B: Rama Michael Fletcher
HB: Dyson Ryder Nash
C: Houli Watson Lovett
HF: McVeigh Lucas McPhee
FF: Jetta Lloyd Davey

R: Hille Stanton Hocking

Int: Welsh, Laycock Gumbelton/Neagle JJ

Emerg: Monfries, NLM, Lonergan, Gumbleton/Neagle

I know everyone is saying neagle isnt ready etc etc. But i think in terms of development we should plag gumby/ neagle any chance we get. these are the guys who will take us to a premiership over the next 5 years and the guys who will fill the hole of two champions when they leave.. Over the next 3-5 years whilst lucas and lloyd are still playing we have to be prepared to give these two a run even if lloyd and lucas are playing even if it makes our forward line too tall. I dont think we will ever be able to play both of them at the same time unless we have injuries so we have to give them both a bit of a run on the big stage this year

The only thing I'm sure is that NLM is in our best team. Shame on everyone who left him out. Bold are certainties. Everyone else I think has a chance of sitting one out at some point this year.

If everyone is fit:

Backs
Lovett-Murray, Michael, Ryder
Welsh, Fletcher, Nash

Mid-field
Dyson, McVeigh, Stanton
Hille, Watson, Winders

Forwards
Davey, Lucas, McPhee
Lovett, Lloyd, Jetta

Interchange
Laycock, Slattery, Rama, Monfries

Emergencies
JJ, Houli, Johns/Gumby

My preference would be:

Backs: Slattery Michael Lovett-Murray

H/Backs: Nash Fletcher Ryder

Centres: Stanton McVeigh Lovett

H/Forwards: Welsh Lucas Monfries

Forwards: Davey Lloyd Jetta

Rucks: Hille Watson Winderlich

Inter: Laycock Houli Dempsey Reimers

I am assuming McPhee won't come up. Also I think we need Reimers toughness more than Rama and Dyson who are well covered by Winderlich, Nash, Lovett type players.

Very much arguable, Sammy's not a bad call either, however would expect Gus to come in if Kyle wasn't quite there
I'm a fan of Longy's policy on Gus - bring him back through Bendigo, let him know he's not a guaranteed starter
JJ in to provide a bit of pure bulk in the midfield, at least until we can start relying on Hocking &/or Hislop

B: Fletcher Michael Nash
HB: NLM Ryder Dempsey
C: Monfries Watson Houli (replaces winderlich)
HF: Jetta Lucas McPhee
F: Welsh Lloyd Davey
R: Hille Stanton McVeigh
Int: Peverill, Slattery, Dyson, Laycock

theres going to be some big fights for the top 22 this year, players likeRama, Johnson, Lovett. Lonergan Johns are also in the mix for round 1. Good to see some competitions going on. :)

knights seems to have talked up davey, lovett and jetta to get bigger roles this season. What are you thoughts on that? Everyone seems to have jetta FP, rotating through the middle i presume? same with the others?

davey is too small to play midfield in my opinion, can you really see him trying to get a ball out of a pack

He doesn't have to, that's not his job.

Not all midfielders are required to go head first into packs.
You need a balance of those that can win the ball and set it up (Jobe, McVeigh), those that can find space (Stanton) and those that can break lines (Davey, Lovett).

Davey has a role to play in the midfield, he worked brilliantly with Jobe in the last quarter against StKilda.

From an outsiders view

FB: Ryder - Michael - Welsh

HB: Nash - Fletcher - Lovett-Murray

C: Dyson - Watson - Dempsey

HF: Rama - Lucas - McPhee

FF: Davey - Lloyd - Jetta

C: Hille - Stanton - Houli

Int: McVeigh - Laycock - Lovett - Reimers

Emerg: Monfries - Peveril - Myers

Inj: Winderlich

I wouldn't Be surprised if Ryder plays on the ball through out the year!

thats a pretty good effort RIT. the 22 players are probably spot on, but just a couple of their positions are wrong.

I'd love to see Lonergan in the team come round 1. Does all the right things without being outstanding.

I'd like to see one of Hocking or Lonergan in the team come round 1 to help out Watson and McVeigh in the engine room, and maybe just play Monfries at Bendigo (along with JJ and Pev) until he really get's the hang of things in the midfield.

B: Rama Michael Fletch
HB: Nash Ryder Dempsey
C: Houli Jobe Dyson
HF: McPhee Lucas Jetta
F: Davey Lloyd Laycock
FOLL: Hille Stanton McVeigh
INT: NLM Lovett Lonergan
Peverill

EM: Johns Monfries Slattery

Assumes Winderlich, Welsh, Hocking, Gumby unavailable due to injury.

If it was up to me, I would have Monfries in ahead of Pev but think Knights will go with Pev. Lonergan has earned a start and is good at the clearances which I think we need. Go Bombers!!!

Couldn't agree more!!!

We have to realise that the fact we played well in the preseason was because not only the gameplan was to run with the ball and take opponents on, but the side we picked was also quick and able to achieve that plan. Now when we're picking our best side, it's looking a lot like last year.
Backs: Michael Fletcher Ryder
Fowards: Lloyd Lucas, possibly 1 of Gumbleton/Johns/Neagle per week
Ruck: Laycock Hille
Mids: Peverill Jason Johnson Watson (Probably watson and one of the others will play each week)

That's a slow side. A very slow side. Everyone is saying, we played well with youngsters in the side and now bringing back the older guys we will surprise teams. I don't think we will, and i really think we might've been a better side with the team we put out in the preseason. Not skill wise perhaps, but the game plan that we are trying to work on, that side might've been better. Because of that, my best side would look something like:

FB: Dempsey Fletcher Lovett Murray
HB: Nash Ryder Welsh
C: Houli Winderlich Dyson
HF: McPhee Lucas Jetta
FF: Lovett Lloyd Davey
FOLL: Hille Stanton McVeigh
INT: Hocking Watson Monfries Laycock

EMER: Ramanaskus Reimers Michael

Rama unlucky to miss out, probably should pick him in their for a bit of skill and polish

It's a much quicker side, with Dempsey, Nash, Lovett Murray, Welsh, Houli, Winderlich, Dyson, McPhee, Jetta, Lovett, Davey, Stanton and McVeigh all on the field who are quick, we can't pick 8 big KPP each week, and pick only 10 quick guys and say, yeah but he's quick and he's quick, they're our speed, they get tired, you need to play many of them. In this case we have all those guys on the field, as well as Ramanaskus, Watson and even Slattery on the bench.

Agreed, and that's the way i picked my side.

Yes we have played well because of the players we used to execute the gameplan and the way we used them, and if this is the case, then why havn't you listed a ruckman resting in the forward pocket? And why is Welsh listed at Half Back when he played so well up forward? And where is Mal? The whole reason we recruited him was to release Fletcher from Full Back and give him a bit more freedom down back which would enable him to be more damaging which is exactly what happened last year when he was selected in the AA team.

The only one i'd probably agree with there is putting Welsh foward. Maybe put him @ half foward, Jetta onto the wing, Dyson onto the bench and Hocking at half back.
But besides that, with not putting Laycock in the foward pocket, we don't need a 3rd tall down there, we have 2 absolute gun key fowards, and the rest is speed such as Davey, Lovett, and now Welsh. McPhee can also be your 3rd marking option if needed.
As for Mal, might seem harsh not playing him, he did have a good preseason, but Ryder/Mal/Fletch in the same backline makes it too big. The most recent 'dominant' teams, including geelong, had amazing run off half back. Not just one guy doing it, but 3-4. That's why we need Dempsey/Lovett Murray/Nash/Hocking down there.

I think it would be stupid not to have Mal in the starting side.

He is in top form, not just stopping, but creating also.

And he can man up on players who no-one (including Fletcher) else in our side can.

Which ever way we go round 1, finally i'm looking at all these proposed sides and seeing a bit of balance and potential. The emergance of Houli, Jetta, Dempsey, Nash as best 22 players gives us plenty of dash as well providing plenty of pressure both offensively and devensively.

With Gumby, Neagle, Myers, Pears, Hissy, Reimers, Magin, Williams all waiting in the wings, we should be looking forward to some great years ahead.
