Not to mention, that like most other players who when under immediate pressure from the opposition look for the quick handball or a short 20 m kick, in that time of him taking the ball on the run, he looked up and saw 40m's down the field Tippett one out and decided to kick there instead.

The ability to raise your eyes and look down field is a quality that has been lacking in our team.

7 touches for a back pocket being used primarily as a stopper and in his second game of footy. Not bad.

:thumbsu:

As CroCop said I don't think we're going to see the best of him until he's moved away from the back pocket. I think Knights will be out (or should be out) for longer than we're being told and I'd love for Jaensch to be given the opportunity to play in that role. He certainly has all the attributes to do it (skills, speed, accurate penetrating kick on the run etc.) and we really miss that type of HFF in our structure.

If we were travelling as well as Geelong not only would Walker be playing but so would I

Load of rubbish. Given the way that they were going, they could've easily gone with Mooney and Lonergan as their key forwards last season. Lonergan's 2008 season as a forward is better than anything Hawkins has produced...why not stick with him? As it stands, Lonergan spent most of 2009 in the reserves and Hawkins has a premiership medal, despite the fact that Lonergan would've been capable of more in that role. Why??? Because its more important to get games into future stars. The 25 year old Lonergan had to wait for the retirement of Harley before he could get more opportunities, and in defence instead of attack.

Even now, the Cats could sure as shit structure up with just Mooney and Pods as their key forwards, but Hawkins will continue to get games.

Props to Craigy to putting his money where his mouth is and actually dropping players based on poor form! Considering no-one thought he'd actually do it... I laughed when I read the headling on afc.com.au

Danger in... WOOT!!

Walker in... Time to shine mate, just let rip! :thumbsu:

He is being played in the backlines and hasnt done a bad job but he has been concentrating on stopping his man . We need to be playing him up the ground on a wing or Half forward whereby he can use his kicking skills to effect. If you recall that beautiful long kick to Tippett last when he was out in space, thats what we need to be using him for and give the ball as much as we can to him when he is out on his own. Jaensch gets the ball on his boot really quickly which is a good quality for a forward and wingman.

Agree with you CroCrop I feel Jaensch should be played on the wing. Penetrating kick, good speed and reads the ball well. I feel he is being played down back out of necessity.
I would rather Petrenko be played in defence or Armstrong selected as a backman to free up Jaensch.
When Mackay (wingman) comes back I would like them to try him on the ball to see how he goes. Try to get some speed in the central corridor if that doesn't work out can always put him back on the wing.

Radio said Burton might be going in for surgery on the knee?

Probably the type of thing he'd have played through (and has been playing through) if not woefully out of form. This would be the cleanout before making a 2009 Hentschel-like charge at a late season return.

Seriously though, WTF are we doing down at West Lakes? There was evidence of this injury weeks ago and was in serious doubt for the Richmond game, why was he even playing with perfectly good options in the SANFL? Why was he playing at all?

What should happen:

Walker to Forward pocket/roaming forward
Tippett to FF/deep forward/roaming forward (changing it up with Walker)
Stevens to CHF
Petrenko to BP
Jaensch to HFF

i.e.

Petrenko Rutten Davis
Doughty Bock Goodwin
Cook Vince McLeod
Jaensch Stevens Dangerfield
Porplyzia Tippett Walker

Maric Thompson Van Berlo

Reilly Douglas Edwards Schmidt

What will happen:

Tipppett FF/ruck
Walker CHF/wing/bench
Edwards BP - oh crap he's conceded 5 goals in the first quarter/midfield
Petrenko HFF
Jaensch HBF
Schmidt HBF
Goodwin RR

So at the end of the game we will say:
"Edwards was solid" - despite being easily beaten by his opponent in the first quarter and then moving on ball to finish with 25 pointless possessions. I can't believe they were saying on 5AA that Edwards could go back and that he had performed well there in the past - yeh 14 seasons ago!! If he plays BP he will get smashed.

"Walker struggled to get into the game. He still needs to work on his attack on the footy and some other aspects of his game" - Despite being played out of position - AGAIN!

Petrenko will get dropped the next week for not performing - despite being played out of position AGAIN!

"Of course we are leaking goals at the moment. Did you see our defence? Once Edwards was moved into the midfield we had Jaensch, Schmidt, Davis and Petrenko all in our back 6. They just need time those guys." um ok, perhaps we could have avoided this situation by playing players IN THEIR CORRECT POSITIONS!!!!!!!

I'm not expecting that Walker will kick a bag this week. With Johncock out and Mackay still absent, our run out of defence is going to be less penetrating and less effective than over the last couple of weeks. I'm worried Walker may not get the ball enough to get a big score. Our I50's haven't been that great without Stiffy in the side.

If Burton is out for six weeks, though, that'll give Walker a decent period to show his colours and claim his spot.

Also hoping the youngsters who have been kept in will have learned from Stiffy's example, and go hard.

Has anyone heard anything on mackay? I thought he was out for a week- 4 weeks ago!! The website has him down as a test but all ive heard this week has been about knights, jimmy, stiffy and macca?? The Heraldsun didnt even have him down at all???
