I have alway said Stevie j is the most under rated player in the AFL he is the only play that can do what Gary Ablett does

I think he is elite. I think the reason why he's not universally seen as elite is people look at his game against the Eagles, for example, and he has it 30+ times, yet goes at 65%, has 6 clangers and burnt the ball a lot.

But he's an incredible footballer, stronger than what you think, deceptively quick, has an incredible football brain and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty with tackles etc.

SJ is absolutely elite.
Not in the same bracket as a Swan or Mitchel but they aren't in his bracket either.
Elite talent who impacts games like some people like to claim Cyrl does. He is Cyrl x 10.

He does some dumb things but when he's on song he can be one of the most damaging players in the game, like Ablett he can rip a game to shreds in the space of 5 minutes.

What his history re B&F finishes?

Don't think he's ever finished in the top five. Didn't even finish top 10 last year, though I'd like to think he would have been right in the mix in 2009 and last year, had it not been for injuries and multiple suspensions, respectively.

But I think the B&F thing is pretty reflective of how he is assessed, compared to Ablett, Pendlebury, Watson, Selwood and others. While he's undoubtedly been one of the best players in the league over the past two years, I just reckon it's that he's too much of a roller coaster. He has a tendency to infuriate with some of his brain farts, which those other players just don't possess. It's unusual for an elite midfielder to do so many undisciplined things, practically every game. Geelong supporters still say things like 'You take the good with the bad', when talking about Johnson and I can't think of any other midfielder who's anywhere near his level that would have their club's supporters say the same.

The Hawthorn game was a classic example. Clear BOG and got the 10 coaches' votes. And yet, he probably did half a dozen things that just defied belief (in a bad way). Without watching the replay, I actually thought today was one of his most disciplined, mistake-free performances that I can remember. And yet, it was really just a good game for him, nowhere near some of his best performances over the past couple of years.

Would put him ahead of Selwood just because he is more reliable as a forward if a switch needed to be made.
Grossly underrating Selwood's ability to seriously influence games in the balance.

SJ is a champ but butchers the ball more than Selwood

Has an ugly head and bad teeth , probably not elite. Rather look good and lose than look bad and win.
At least he showers!! I read an article where Pendelbury said he hates showering and often goes without for days...

God I wish Collingwood had taken him.
If not for that medical report we'd have the undisputed best midfield in the comp.
Then again we could have had Pav too.
Shoulda, woulda, coulda...

and Jono Brown
But then you wouldn't have got the Big Q Stick ;)

I made literally no comment on Selwood's ability to influence games in the balance. Nor Johnson's, for that matter.

Literally? Yes. But you said, "Would put him ahead of Selwood just because he is more reliable as a forward" and I said Selwood's ability in crunch moments is > than Johnston's ability to switch forward. Just an opinion.

Sometimes tries to do too much, probably because better than half the time it comes off. But other than that. Easily Elite.
