First round draft picks last 10 years :

2013 - Dom Sheed
2014 - Liam Duggan
2015 - Traded for Redden
2016 - Venables medically retired
2017 - Brander delisted
2018 - Traded for 2017 R2 picks (Allen, Ryan and Petruccelle)
2019 - Traded for Kelly
2020 - Traded for Kelly
2021 - Campbell Chesser
2022 - Rueben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett
2023 - Harley Reid

Six actual first round picks on our list and pick 12 tonight will make it 7

Richmond will add that many to their list tonight

Not blaming anyone, just saying

I mean really, when you look at that, the lack of access is what's held us back there.

Sheed
Duggan
Redden
Venables unfortunate...out of our control
Brander X
Allen, Ryan
Kelly trade ??X that's the wrinkle.
Chesser X
Ginbey hewett
Reid

Overall its ok.

The brander Chesser and 2024 pick 3 years, are definitive stuff ups.

The Kelly trade cost us too, but ultimately, we doubled down on a premiership and went chips all in, and it didn't work. Had we not gone all in everyone on here would've called us for folding and not taking a punt.

For the record, going by Phil's previous posts, his favourite was a player who didn't want to leave Melbourne (I think Reid) and second favourite was Joe Berry.

I took his comments to refer to Berry.

I took his comments to refer to Berry.
I’ve tried to back calculate this without hitting Phil up via dm from memory Phil has made the following comments

Murphy Reid his favourite in the draft but doesn’t want to leave melboure

Hotton a big flight risk

Joe Berry one of the best in the draft

Happy if north come with their F1 for our pick 12

Basically too many possibilities so I’m just going to let it play out.

I’ll have a little chuckle if we end up with Reid/Hotton given one of the justifications in support of trading pick three was the not a lot of top picks wanting to come west.

I'm looking forward to us scrambling and downgrading due to mids all being taken

PIck 12 to
Pick 21 (Cooper Hynes) and a future 4th

For lower rated teams draft day is neant to be a joyious occasion. Thanks alot for ruining Christmas day for me (draft day) **** you.

I have settled. it's Murphy Reid or bust for me. I will only have hope if we pick Murphy because of memes

Reminds me of the time I told my wife I was going to buy a nice 780HTP Barcrusher to go fishing and that I would need to upgrade the ute because I needed better towing capacity (Pick 3).

Wife then stepped and said I could but only if I bought her a BMW first.

She now has a crappy BMW X1 (pick 72) and I've ended up with a Pick 14:

Pick 14 isnt as sexy but it would ride better than a fking Barcrusher.

Is Clarke a dictator and noone else at the club has a single say in what he does?

Because that is what you are implying.

Which is clearly not correct.
Sometimes people hire someone and give them full autonomy, and then are reluctant to step in as not to be seen as micro managers.

I imagine shit went down like this:

Pyke publicly: Barooogah! I am king kong. I fix this mess in no time.

Mini in interview: I'll be able to get them climbing the ladder in no time. It's not about the list, it's about the gameplan and "synergy"

Pyke private thoughts: This is exactly what I want hear

campaigner Clarke in interview: It's easy to do a few trades and get us winning again.

Pyke private thoughts: This is exactly what I want hear

Neck Minnit: Strong draft hand pissed up against the wall.

Stronger hands, takes the ball generally at a higher point, straighter long kick and has performed significantly better against men. (VFL and also local league) Also shown great leading patterns particularly from deep against men. A lot of those leading patterns tend to not show in the CTL or Champs due to the lower overall skill level and players not necessarily putting the ball to the forwards advantage as often.

This is my last post before the draft. I go into a long meeting in 8 minutes before we break for a few hours.

WCE pick will likely be around 5.20pm WA time.

I'll know the exact order of preference in an hours time. Pyke has had an input, I hope his input is laid down like the letter of the law as I know Massey's order.
God speed and may we sail forth to a glorious new day

14. Taj Hotton

23. TRADE: West Coast - Matt Whitlock

Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country
DEF/FWD, 199cm

Trade: Richmond trades pick 23 and a future third round pick for West Coast's future first round pick tied to Hawthorn and their future second round pick

The Eagles are pushing to trade into the first round with future selections and have been linked to key position prospects throughout. The Tigers are well positioned to gain an enviable 2025 draft hand by trading later first-rounders out to talent-hungry clubs like West Coast. Some clubs see Whitlock's future up forward, but he did his best work as a reliable defender with his long reach and athletic profile. He's an ideal long-term prospect at either end for the Eagles.

In the mix: Matt Whitlock, Harrison Oliver

30. West Coast - Hamish Davis
Claremont/Western Australia
FWD/MID, 190cm

Davis' WAFL exploits, which included four goals in a crunch final for Claremont, has given him a chance to find a home on the first night. His running power, speed and marking ability at 190cm is the full package for a half forward, but needs to re-work his kicking action to take the next step. West Coast is keen to add forward depth in this pool, and could settle on Davis if they don't select Berry. Both Sydney clubs have also shown interest in the Claremont gun.
This was spew worthy

I think there are a lot of good options that may be available at our first pick, and we should be happy with any of Reid, Lindsay, Travaglia or Allan. In this draft, I don't think pick 3 projects as obviously better than one of these + Baker. In fact, I'm not convinced Sam Lalor is better than any of them.

Shanahan and Berry look like excellent players, but not really in a position of need. I'd still say they're good value for the pick, even if we leave ourselves some work to do with our haul of 2025 picks to even out the squad positionally. That's OK by me; rebuilds take time.

Hotton is a boom or bust selection. He'd be my 7th choice, of those who seem a chance to be available. I wouldn't love the pick, but it might turn out to be a stroke of genius.

No idea who'll be on the cards at our second pick, but it does seem like we'll have much more attractive options than some players we've previously drafted around that mark. If we can't do better than Ainsworth, O'Neill, Foley or Petruccelle in this draft, we're doing something wrong.

Given our recent links, Cals late mail and his bro potentially being a train on, I'm tipping Hotton is who we'll end up getting.

Reid at this point would be fairly celebrated on here I reckon. So I'll be surprised if it happens 🥹

My issue with Hotton is pretty simple, it's a risk really shouldn't be taking and our medicos don't cover themselves in glory. We aren't a club where injured players have miraculously gotten the best out of themselves (Save Vardy in 2017/18).

Add Hotton and I feel our draft bounty is going to be sitting on the pine for the next 6M. Before all of this happens.

- "Taj is coming off a serious injury so we won't rush his rehabilitation, we'll take a conservative approach and he'll ease back into loading as a long term prospect"

- "Unfortunately Taj has had a setback in his rehabilitation, that's disappointing as he was progressing quite well and we thought he'd turned a corner.."

- "Yeah Taj's knee hasn't really pulled up how we'd like, he'll now seek the advice of an overseas specialist, so we'll put him on the LTI list and on ice for the remainder of the season"

And there you have his first year of development wasted and 2025 cooked.

Also, generally speaking, not playing and being stuck the rehab group is more often than not the first stage of a young player getting homesick and wanting out. Given Hotton ticks both these boxes there's potential for a Perfect StormTM here.

Funnily enough, despite all that I'd still prefer him to Berry 🤣
