I think you hit the nail on the head. Clarke did not have a personal relationship with darling, nor Barrass so it was a business decision. He did have one with baker and the ex Richmond list/recruiting team and was blinded by this, falling into simple negotiation mistakes. I’m over it now, as long as he learns from it then all is not lost. If it happens again, it’s on Pyke though in my mind. You can let someone make the same mistake twice, he will need to own it.

Yeah agree with this sentiment. It’s done, don’t do it again.

Thank you very much briztoon. Based on your comment above it actually all makes sense now !

In all seriousness though, I was looking back through pages trade news trying to follow Brisbane's trades and it wasn't logical because the live picks kept moving up as bids were made it made it extremely tough to track.

From your explanation, it seems best way to match bids is to trade into multiple lower picks because when/if earlier picks are 'used' to match a different bid, the draft point increase is multiplied over multiple low end picks rather than a single higher pick. This could net a larger draft point increase each time it happens. Not sure if the math/points system supports this but that seems to be what Brissy did and it worked extremely well. Well done to you, smashed it.

That only works with later bids. Not Ashcroft and even then picks get pushed out before they come back down. And for example our pick 26 ended up 30 so its points value decreased.

2024 pick 3 ans some picks in the late 60's traded for 12 plus 14 plus Owies.

North 2025 top 5 pick trade for 28 and a future likely 28.

The Norrh trade is undeniable indication how highly round 1 picks were valued this draft.

We were lucky no-one wanted to trade our future picks for and earlier pick than the 30 we used.

People saying we could have done better. It could also have been worse. We still hold an outstanding 2025 draft hand.

List managers are judged by there trading and ability to stay within the salary cap
By resigning players to contract's good for player and club
And by also making sure age range is good

They are not judged on the quality of the list, that's the recruiting teams job

Duane has basically saved Clarke arse with his drafting,
because Clarke ability to negotiate has been brought into question
by his own work colleagues

Not saying it’s easy to know what will happen but I’d say the way cards fell saved clarke rather than any particular skill (Bradbury situation). Wasn’t duane skill that made shanahan available at 30.

Nevertheless, let’s hope it pans out well.

Are there any good rucks going to be free agents next year the eagles could target instead of getting Knobel this year, because while Knobel would have been a great get i think getting another KPD in the SSP period, preferably Phillips, is more important than another ruck. If thats the case hopefully flynn and b williams can do enough to make it through this year

TDK, but the chance of getting him out of there is remote and would cost a fortune although we do have cap to use.

Had we kept 3 we would've been so hamstrung even if we had we got what we got for Barrass. F 1 2 3

3 for 6 and baker. Tigers said no all along.
3 for 10 and baker. Tigers couldn't agree cause Freo campaigners.

Yes I know, We should've held firm and offered our F2 or 26 for baker.

1.Let's say they took 26.

This draft would've been 3 63 77

2.Let's say they took our F2

This draft 3 26 63 77

In either scenario, we wouldn't have been able to split 3 on the night. We wouldn't have got the extra pick 45 for dropping from 15 to 16.

In scenario 1 and 2
We would've definately burned the Hawks F1 to get back in but likely only got something in the early 30s for it. And we might have even burnt the other F2 to get what we got at 45 too.

So in total would've had only Hawks F3 next year to show for barrass.

The more in totality you analyse the more you realise, the depth of the draft was a limiting factor for live trades early.

In the end we did very well all barr telegraphing what we thought of baker and not playing hard ball on it.

There will be another AFL ruckman on a list that started to light it up as VFL, wafl etc level. Target them.

It's becoming ever increasingly obvious, don't take ruckman with first second rounders. Tigers had all the picks in the world and couldve afforded to risk one of the picks on him, but chose higher risk players in hotton and Armstrong. They missed a trick here.

Barnett with 23 from us 2 yrs ago ain't going so well.

Gold coast nabbing knobel is what will become more common now. Freo are just dumb for letting that happen, and yes we know your thoughts on us not taking him.

For us, I think we have enough for the next 12 months. See what pennies drop over the VFL season.

Even with rucks, If we think they are good enough to make it we should ask them to train on. If they perform better then Flynn and B Williams in pre season and Key Backs are looking good enough then we go with them.

I don’t think B Williams is a ruck, I think Flynn can do the job but the shelf is bare after that atm.

Blakiston and Eastland are options.

MSD would be the place to get further depth for ruck or KPD depending on how the players are going and what the injury list looks like but ideally being bottom 4 you just want to go best player not positional needs with our list rebuild.

Greeves, Rodriguez, Curtin and Lindsay are the ones I think we’ll target. Ludowyke projects so much better than Whitlock, still can’t believe Norf blew their load and couldn’t wait another year in a 25 year rebuild given Richmond and us are highly unlikely to select him. Could have had him on a platter.

Might as well go ahead and employ his entire family at this rate, considering he has Chesser, Noble and now Shanahan at the club...
What's wrong with going hard for the best available talent ? By the looks of it Willem has more talent than a possible F/S selection.
It would also help if the women's team could recruit his sister Jasmin.
Don't scoff at the idea, North Melbourne,Essendon and Carlton will use the family connection when Harleys next contract is up for renewal.

If Clarke is such a crap negotiator we should keep him away from Harley's next contract negotiations.
He would probably do a deal with Richmond to get him.

I wonder if they offered the tigers 2 for 10 20 during trade week.? At the time most teams wouldve taken that.

Or did they get greedy and want more for 2, tigers said no and then come draft night norf forced to cough up more.

So Sandy Brock

Played in the Suns VFL premiership side :whitecheck:
Played for Peel pre draft :whitecheck:
198cm:whitecheck:
Turning 22:whitecheck:

So an NT lad with links pre draft to WA. Been developing at the Suns in a pretty succesful VFL programe.

Hopefully we still have a keen eye on good talls.
Wonder if with some players we're trying to convince them to sign for the Beagles, promising them an SSP spot, then not signing them for the seniors haha.

Not sure if legally that's entrapment, but a bold strategy nonetheless.

I like Greeves a lot. Lindsay haven't seen much.

With the Chad and these, we are going to need all those picks we have and some more I think. I wouldn't be adverse next year on going all in and using all our 2026 f picks to get into 2025.

If we can land Warner Rodrigues, Curtin, Banfield, greeves, and a mature ruck next year I recon we are close to full list rebuild.

Another 6 18yo next year's will result in us having about 30 under 24.

I think they wanted Tauru if they didn’t take FOS so deal would have to have been 2 for 6 and ?

In hindsight I wonder if 2 for 6 and 23 was discussed predraft, which essentially looks like FOS and Richmond F2 for Tauru, Whitlock and North F1

He would probably do a deal with Richmond to get him.

We would have to seriously consider it if they offered us pick 1, 2 in 2025 and their F1 2026.

Trade pick 2 for Warner, bring in Dyson Sharpe and Freddy

All things considered with the trade for Baker that pick ended up being 17 was it? It's not the worse deal in the world. Baker will be a solid/good addition to our best 22.

We've done worse deals.

Now that the final piece of the puzzle for 2024 is in place (Champion for free), I feel like the only out and out failure* of the offseason was the price paid for Baker.

The draft was a big win. Super pumped.

And Woosha's back.

* although the news about Oscar's knee isn't great. But we have AA Waterman, J Williams, A Reid and now Shanahan.

I’d love to have Warner on the list but am wary of the cost from both a salary cap and draft capital viewpoint

If he extends his contract at Sydney I wouldn’t be unduly upset as our draft hand will have us well placed to get some very good players in the door - potentially 3 picks before a bid on Banfield comes, then maybe able to match a bid on him with Hawks F2 and a bid on Walley with Hawks F3. Not sure where that would leave Evans but bids mid to late in R3 will be easily matched

Just don’t want him going to Fremantle

From that article above it has 3 Swans academy players included. Makes the possible Warner trade scenario really interesting....especially with the points index changing - they will probably have to trade their 2026 picks into 2025.

Hopefully they'll be happy to let him go to bring their next backbone of mids!
