You don’t let Oscar go for pick 4. There’s a good chance pick 4, not only doesn’t become as good as Oscar, but you also waste years of development which we can’t afford to do.

You need to give up the lower tier player like a Barrass / Mackay type which doesn’t hurt the team as much but still gets you a first rounder

It 100% depends on his knee.

Anyway he is likely signing an extension soon. Hopefully after going to Quatar and getting a specialist review.

He's retired under medical advice.

What list issue?

Just thought it's a tad tough calling Simo wrong about 10 players being cut when the 11th player retired early due to concussion concerns.

Personally think that was just some funny sarcasm mate.

He wasn't drafted as a lockdown defender and he has many attributes that make him a quality outside player.

We've got Tommy Cole and Liam Baker as lockdown small defenders and Ginbeast to lockdown any resting rucks.

If you watch/read about Hough's U18 campaign you'll see he influenced games playing inside/outside mid between the arcs and creating off half back.

We didn’t trade for Baker to be a lockdown defender he will be midfield or a rebounding HBF .. Cole would be a liability playing the lockdown role.. No point in moving Hough if he’s found a defensive position that suits the team , he reminds me a lot of Corey Enright so yes perhaps he could be freed up to a more attacking role at HBF ..

I don't understand why he was delisted ? Good young player with pretty good skills and definitely puts in. I think he is perfect for us and is best 22 I would have thought ?

Not wrong. I work with a lot of Carlton flogs unfortunately, and generally the view with him is positive and "We're going to regret letting him go, looked really good" etc etc. Bit like how they all seem to love Owies despite him not having a contract.

I guess with Carroll he just reached that point where he's been on their list long enough and still hadn't established himself in their best 22 yet. Tough ask, conidering their midfield is Walsh, Cripps, Kennedy, Cerra etc.

A lot of AFL commentary described Carroll as having a "breakout season" in 2024 as well, which makes him being cut all the more odd. That's despite him being sub impacted in 9 of 15 games.

The fact several other clubs also seem to be into Carroll suggests a similar view. I'll be disappointed if we miss out.

My issue with having Smillie as a mid is not his ability to impact clearance, it is post clearance that concerns me.

The importance of team defense and two way running in the modern game can't be played down, and this is what worries me about Smillie as his speed and endurance have question marks.

I already worry that Reid is not a 2 way runners or defensively minded, and there are not many balanced 195cm mids that have made it in the AFL. I can think of Cripps, Bont and Blakey, with Jarrod Berry and Noah Anderson at 192cm....

I agree and think the 15-25 area of the draft is not appealing types of players for us, I think there will be a plethora of great value pick ups in the 25-50 range.

We also drafted Clay Hall and Jack Hutchinson (both 190cm) who are projected to play mid and both we have barely seen and have large upside.

Call me crazy but I really hope the outside player we are pinning our hopes and dreams on is already on our list.

Brady Hough

This man is a gun lockdown defender, but we need to unleash his 191cm frame into the midfield.

** We also have a string bean 196cm Ryan Maric with elite skills who could chug down some protein powder and develop into Darcy Moore.
Don't think Maric needs to chug down protein powder. Wasn't he a little big and put a lot of work into slimming down to be more mobile and play AFL. I think he could naturally bulk up a little if he wanted but how it would impact his game is the question.

Tall defenders

Gov 32
Harry 25
Jamieson 23
Bazzo 21
Maric 21

Ginbey 194cm 21
Hough 190cm 21

We draft another kid.

Bring in a semi mature 25 yrs or younger DFA for depth.

That would be 9 defenders 190cm or taller.

Without moving anyone else other than Maric to defense.

Key Defenders on the list:

Gov
Harry
Bazzo

I am fine calling Jamo the 4th because he played 5 games there in 2024 to be the first forward/ruck we've trialed going back, but let's be honest the jury is still out there. Oscar Allen would be the genuine 4th tall as he's played more down there than Jamo.

Maric I named in my starting 22 in defence as a 3rd tall but he's so far played no games there, he's a forward/utility/wing so far at senior and AFL level and so far there's no confirmation from the club he'll be playing back in 2025, just a bit of speculation from the likes of us.

190cm or taller.. whats that like more than half the list? We're a tall side outside of key positions, for sure. How many of those blokes can play on a Ben King every week and not expect to be soundly beaten 9 times out of 10?

How many 200cm forward play each week?

One per team. Two at most.

Harry 200cm or Bazzo 196cm take the giants. Jamieson also 200cm.

Maric is 196cm.

So that is 4 options excluding Gov for obvious reasons.

What's the latest on sheeds injury?

Is it possible he pulls the pin if he can't get a pre season in? I gather if he does medially retire at that point he gets payed out and a list spot opens up?

I doubt we need another list spot this year. If things don't improve in the pre season he can retire mid season and we get a pick in the msd.

Agreed. The aim of a rebuild is not to get as many draft picks a possible, it's to win a flag. You don't trade a mid 20s, top 10 KPF during a rebuild, you lock them in and find the other missing pieces.

Trading Barrass was the right idea for a team with plenty of KPP. 30 years old and could get bunch of selections for him.

Plenty of kids are played in defense early before moving up the ground.

They need to learn how to defend at AFL level and they need several preseasons to build the endurance and power to play further up the ground.

Plus the modern game requires a player to be flexible and play multiple roles if needed.

Shoe horning a kid into a just a lock down role so early in their career isn't good for our list development.

There's 3 defenders including gov, and then many more options. The point of the conversation was that all the options are forwards and rucks and other than getting a few games into Jamo [and Barnett at the beagles] we have barely started preparing any of these guys for AFL level football in defence. Other than Jamo none of them have even trained with the backs let alone play.

I love Maric, would love for him to make it as a defender whether KPD or 3rd tall. Lot of water to go under the bridge yet though, and with all these guys [including Edwards and Bazzo] there's still as many reasons why they maybe won't make it as there is reason to believe they maybe will.

Gov is the only player on the list you could say is a proven key position defender now. And he himself is kind of a unique case playing a much different kind of game than most key defenders are going to play, and would still likely be given a bath by the top forwards if he had to play at fullback for some reason.

Agree, he's worth 2 first rounders obviously but why take the risk. Better question would be, if Sydney were a suitor would you straight swap him for Warner rather than spending 2 firsts on Warner?

Personally I'd rather use 2 firsts than trade them for Warner. And I'd rather keep Allen so we have him through the 26/27 high water mark before losing the remains of our 2018 A graders, but I could see a Warner swap as being mutually beneficial if the intend would be to just play Oscar as a forward for the next 10 years and watch Reid and Williams go the way of Jarrod Brander.

I’m waiting to hear that we’ve signed him.

So all of this Norf splitting business is going to take up discussion. Tauru would make absolute sense at Norf, as also he would at St Blunder. I cannot see Melbourne taking him at 5 as they need to restock their midfield (maybe harder depending on which 4 of Smith’s teammates he was supplying).

Tigers know that a jump from 6 to 2 is a nice one but probably not worth more that a late R1. That is the issue with this draft. Tigers will have choices at all of the R1 picks and they can add everything they need.

Norf cannot slide back to 10 and expect him to be there. Melbourne are not giving up 5 and rumours of Saints preparedness to split is likely to occur on draft night.

I would laugh my ar$e off if Tigers do the split with Norf only to pick Tauru at 2. They can pick up a second mid at 10 and likely Shanahan at 11 with a KPD and running backs later.

With us holding 12 and dreaming of a high end mid, I would love the beggar bowl brigade to be forced into Tauru at 2.

The club has up until pre draft list lodgement if he was going to be medically retired and open up a list spot. He had surgery quite recently so it’s unlikely (but possible) a case could be made for him to be medically retired before the draft. If he doesn’t respond well over summer and we need an extra list spot it may be revisited before the SSP or MSD.
Agree on it being in 2025 - I assume our cap was full for 2024 so unable to pay out this year. Besides, Sheed is worth one last try. We should know one way or another if he can continue, otherwise we’re likely to have an early mid season pick. Which I believe will be tradable in 2025

Bazzo? 2024 was a right offf but he got back in the final round. He needs a good preseason and game time to develop.

Jamieson the same.

Maric the same.

Harry needs to step up.

How many more tall defenders do we need to trial in 2025? That's 4 plus Gov being the general.

We draft an 18 yr old to add to the production line for tall defenders. Dennis 195cm AA CHB from WA for example. Pick in the 30 to 40 range.

Many have mentioned Barnett as a 200cm CHB.

We have plenty of options to develop. Just need to keep sifting through and find out who is good enough.

I'm thinking we will draft only 4 players including Champion and sign up 2 SSP players.
We need to hit next year's draft hard (including F/S & next gen academy players), with possibly more players traded in. So we need to be flexible in regards to list spots and not have extra players signed past 2025.
Whilst next years draft looks good from a west Aussie perspective, getting Warner could clean us out as far as getting players other than those we have first dibs on.
With this year being so deep we'd be crazy not to try to get back in at any point or split or 2nd rounder

North should just take him with 2.
They've got that many high draft picks in the mids I don't understand why all the mocks that have them taking another one.
Sheezel (2), McKercher (2), Wardlaw (3), Phillips (3), LDU (4), Stephens (5), Simpkin (12), Powell (13) and that doesn't include the mids they've squeezed into other areas.

They have one decent pick in the draft, it would be such a Norf thing to do to take another mid with a high draft pick.
