IF we were to somehow end up with 3 picks in the 20s, getting Oliver, Hynes +davis/Moraes/kpd then maybe I could live with it, but we are in a rebuild. Gotta keep the talent trickling in.
An extra year of development is worth something, and this years draft from the 6-40 area is stronger than usual for sure

Baker
Johnston
Cole
Duggan
Ginbey
Hunt
Yeo potentially
Chesser

That is 8 players who can all play the small / medium defender role.

We only need 4.

We add a Lindsay and or a Oliver that's two more who will need a spot to develop.

So 10 players other than Hough.

We have the depth to allow Hough to play wing. Rotate with Ginbey off a wing.
I mean more than we have nobody even close to what Hough can do on the small forwards. Maybe we do just get Johnston to follow the same path as Hough with Cole the other small, which might work, but imo there is no rush to move him. Our 2nd pick has outside mids in that range that would suit. We probably end up with Lindsay with pick 12 too who can also be that outside mid.

its not just about having small/medium defenders, they gotta be capable too. Our backline is looking super weak now with no Barrass and very little attention put to it via the draft in recent years(outside Hough). Yes we have Ginbey now but hes not quite suited to marking a small forward imo, not agile enough.

I mean its against the rules to not bring players in so its not as if we'll be sitting out of the draft. 3 picks in the 2nd round v's 12 and 26 is not going to break the club. Especially when we've basically blown every pick in that 11-15 range for years on end at this point, while generally nailing our second round selections.

Also is the talent difference between a top 5 pic [maybe several] next year greater than the difference an extra 12 months of Beagles football can make for a pick at 12 or 30?

At some point the calculus does become ok well we could have Oliver/Moraes plus 12 months in the beagles or Rodreigez, Matt Whitlock at 29 and 12 months in a back pocket behind Bazzo and Jamo or Cody Curtain. In 2028 who beats who?

I don’t think there’s a single universe where Adelaide don’t select Draper at

You’d think so, but I think they could be wooed by a bigger body like Langford.

It wont break the club, but the club has more to think about than the most optimal way to bring in kids, they also need to consider fans, marketing, etc.
No first round pick in the middle of a rebuild is a terrible look, despite what we have next year.

The only way a player we are happy to take isnt there at 12 is if Armstrong is left and Tauru is the only KPP taken in the top 11.
We should take ANY of the mids/Travaglia who slide, and if Tauru is the one there at 12 then take him instead, he would be a great fit for us too.
Trade a f2 to get another pick around the 30 mark, we dont have to split 12

We get the last pick of that tier of talent, we will get somebody.

My friend less than 1 in a thousand Eagles '"fans" know any of those names you just said. They already know we used pick 3 on Liam Baker. And the really keen observers might have a vague idea of who Bo Allan is and expect us to take him. If he's gone by our pick and we live trade 12 and can say we have 4 first rounders next year that's 1000% more marketable to the punter than drafting Lindsey or whoever its going to be. Likely the biggest name the media focus on with this years draft hand regardless of who we pick in the main draft is going to be Malakai Champion, and he's a given no matter what we do with our draft hand from here.

New draftees are developed on the flanks or pockets unless you are Harley. They simply dont have the bodies or endurance to play further up the ground at AFL level.

Hough has done his apprentership. Now lets see if he can graduate and make a similar impact further up the ground. If he can happy days. If not, we have a very good defender.

Kids like Johnston, or a Lindsay or an Oliver take the back pocket position abd they spend 2 to 3 years developing there. Chesser another option for quick smalls.

Just like the Cats did with Humphries and Adkins moved to the midfield from defense.

Sorry, but I’m not interested in sub-optimal results just to please the fans.

Thats true, but I still stand by my point.
Go and see what the media will shriek about all year if we dont improve, itll be all about how we took nothing in the draft and sold it all for Baker. Is that the narrative we want the average fan to be hearing all year? Does the club want that?

Yes we know its not that simple, but thats what the headlines will say and thats what your average fan will see

Unless The Don can do something anything to make the Beagles more competitive then I don’t see them providing upcoming players with much development. I think it could (again) be a real brake on our progress - especially when the majority of teams have the (arrogantly named) VFL.

Im all for it if we have somebody else in mind to take that lockdown defender role, but until I see it im going to lean towards keeping Hough in the back pocket

I just saw you added more here.

We are a very young side who probably doesnt have the capacity to bring in several first year players into the side at once. Half the squad is only in their first few seasons as it is.

Its a lot easier to trickle in a couple of kids each year than coming to 2026 and having potentially 3-4 new first year players who are good enough to be selected round 1.

I dont know what youre trying to say here, its a bit all over the place.
An extra 12 months into Moraes/Oliver is worth something, its not insignificant. We want to be competitive now and into the future, not just in 3 years time.

You mean like the club listened to the fans demanding we recruit Baker for 14? 😊
That was done with an intention of playing better next year, that was for the fans and sponsors. I dont think they anticipated the reaction they got, and tbh the reaction was over the top.
The deal for 14 was seemingly agreed on a while ago

Hi,

Please dont attack! i am a Perth based supporter so WCE is kinda my WA team i even go to live games to watch with the family

Any chance WCE may look at our pick 28 and 31?

Been a fair bit of discussion about it on here

Keen to see us trade our 2x F2 picks for 28 and 31 prior to a Kako bid then trade 26 for your F2 after the bid +/- some steak knives

It’s a trade I think makes sense for both clubs. No idea if it happens though

Would make sense and seems to be a trade thats fair on both parties

if i recall Hamish Davies sits in that 20-30 bracket would be good pick up for WCE

Well then you are never going to see it. Until other kids gets the opportunity to develop.

We are in development mode. Not play every best player in their best position and win at all costs. We simply are not at that stage.

And if we dont expose the kids to AFL level and develop them we wont get there.
