Murphy Reid

A midfielder-forward who has speed to burn which allows him to burst away from congestion and use the ball with precision. Reads the game exceptionally well, is a prolific ball winner and creative and innovative when in congestion. Was outstanding at the National Championships, averaging 24.5 disposals (9.2 contested), 3.2 clearances and 3.2 tackles across the four matches which included dominant displays against South Australia and the Allies. Was rewarded by winning Victoria Metro’s MVP award as well as All Australian honours. Was also a star at club level, averaging 21 disposals and kicking 14 goals in 10 matches for the Sandringham Dragons. Capped the year with his second Coates Talent League premiership and selection in the Team of the Year. Did not test at the Draft Combine due to knee injury.

He seems to be the slider that could last to our pick after Allen & Lindsay have been seemingly snatched from our grasp. While Smilie was floated as a possible slider with very little evidence.
The big danger is if noone drafts a key position player like Shanahan or Armstrong before our pick, meaning that Reid could be taken right before our pick.

If Allan, Lindsay and Reid are all gone before our pick, I'd be happy for us to split the pick.
Rather than using it on Hotton, Berry or Shanahan.

Hotton is very good player, but would be too much of a risk that early, especially with only one shot in the first round.
He is a proven contested ball winner, a strong mark, has plenty of x factor and can do some incredible things.
No better example of his abilities than his 32 disposal 4 goal game.


On the other hand IF Hotton is able to fully recover from his AFL with no ill effects, it might end up as a genuine bargain pick.
That being said, taking a punt on Hotton is still more palatable than drafting Berry or Shanahan with whatever pick 12 will end up being.

He’s definitely not fast and didn’t do end of year testing which is a shame. I’ve said it before the game slows down around him with ball in hand, I can’t recall too many instances when his lack of speed has been costly but the question is does he fit into how McQualter wants the team to play?

Given the standard of our kicking and almost total lack of dynamic vision and unpredictability I think he’d be a good addition if available.

Look, I acknowledge that we don't need another key forward as a list need.
However, I've seen a lot of Shanahan this year (at least 12+ live games).
I got to chat to him and his mother for over an hour yesterday.
He's fairly reserved compared to some of the other draft prospects I've interacted with the last couple of years. Very happy to come west.
But, boy, on the field, there's something that gives me the feeling that he'll be a generational forward in the same mould as Josh Kennedy was.
He is 195cm, he takes the ball at its highest point, he crashes packs, his sinks goals from 50m out on the boundary. I think what makes sense as a selection from a positional point of view today may not stack up in retrospect in 5-7 years. I think Shanahan is far more bankable than a Hotton, Reid, Allan or Lindsay. I understand the impetus for us selecting one of them, however, by comparison, Shanahan has by far the highest ceiling.

No. He ran a 3 second 20m sprint at the start of the year and speed is not something that’s easy to teach. He’ll also look fast next to slow opponents which will obviously have a selection bias in his highlights. Noober also does videos where every touch/involvement is included so you may want to watch a few of those for a better picture of his speed but it’s certainly not his one wood.

Murphy seems the ideal cool head counterpart to the energy of Harley and Hewett. I think that trio has a lot of potential (I see Ginbey as a defender for the long term tbh). Throw in Hall as the more defensively-minded inside mid also.

I really hope he's there at our first.

Our F1st for Dees pick 9. Tigers 10 on draft night. Add two ball getters now in this draft.

As long as we retain a 2025 1st and later picks we can do deals next year for clubs chasing points holding top 10 picks.

He doesn't really "burn" anyone off or create space via his pace. If he's already on the move he'll zip away from someone flat footed in a stoppage sure, but there's a distinct lack of explosiveness, which generally separates state level players like Trew for example, from AFL talent.

I actually low key get shades of Sheezel lite from Murphy. Neat, tidy skills, light frame without being an explosive athlete.

If we did manage to draft him, the chip scab role in defense doing the kick ins wouldn't be the worst idea in the world initially.

There are two type of footballing speed - Leg speed and Head speed.

Murphy has elite Head Speed , has quick reactions by hand and foot as he processes the game in real time faster than most.

It's why guys like Scott Pendlebury and Sam Mitchell where able to play the game for longer.

Murphy Reid is one of the very few that can process the game quicker than those around him, thats his point of difference.

The bonus is that he also has very good foot skills and clean hands.

As far as footy IQ goes he is the best in this draft cohort.

Remember good folk, leg speed , is worth SFA, if you don't know how to either use it or exploit it.... preferably both.

I doubt that Murphy Reid gets to our pick, however if he did, I would be super pissed if we didn't call his name out.
