West Coast

Players drafted: Bo Allen (16), Jobe Shanahan (30), Tom Gross (46), Luca Greggo (48), Hamish Davis (65)

West Coast rivals Richmond for the biggest winners of the 2024 AFL Draft. It was tough to envisage after trading back from pick 3 to 12 in the Liam Baker deal, but WA's best prospect Bo Allan slid through to the selection after they traded back with Port Adelaide and the Eagles scooped him up.

Allan is a ready-made, physical midfielder who leads from the front. He will start his career at halfback but it won't be long before he joins Harley Reid in the engine room.

Another minor miracle occurred with highly-rated key forward Jobe Shanahan falling all the way to pick 30 despite receiving a draft invitation on night one. Shanahan's ceiling is immense as a 194cm goalkicking power forward, but some clubs also see his future down back where he reads the play and his athleticism is on show.

They snared tough inside midfielder Tom Gross at 46, with his point of difference being an underrated aerial ability. Luca Greggo offers serious speed on the edge of contests, while massive slider Hamish Davis was scooped up at 65 out of Claremont.

The 190cm forward kicked four goals in a WAFL final this year, won 40 disposals in a midfield masterclass at Colts level and also took out best on ground honours in the Colts Grand Final. He could play football early for the Eagles, but needs to re-work his kicking action to become more reliable distributing the ball.

West Coast can list Malakai Champion as a category-B rookie after he slid through the national draft.

Grade: A+

Champion goes onto our list today, whether Cat B or A I guess it doesn't really matter.

Leaves us the one SSP spot for trains ons, reported names are:

Burgiel - the incumbent, who has loads of talent and speed but also injuries. Needs to have a huge pre season to nail that spot.
Michael Selwood (Peel) - 21 year old defender with apparent great foot skills.

Olli Hotton - talented mid/half forward with great skills. Delisted from Saints due to injuries, had stress fractures in his back in first season. Had a reasonable output at VFL level this year, including a 5 goal haul.

James Van Es - another delisted from the Saints, 196cm Key Defender. Good lock down type with good long kick on him, and can intercept. Went onto Saints inactive list this season after ankle surgery, was his 3rd ankle injury at the club. Assume after his latest surgery he's good to go!

Anyone else rumoured?

Based on who we took in the draft, feel Van Es represents the biggest list need.

Definitely agree that a KPD is our biggest need. When you look at our talls -

AFL :
Ruck - Flynn or BWill
Forward/Ruck - JWill
KPF - Allen, Waterman
KPD - McGovern, Edwards

WAFL :
Ruck - BWill or Flynn
Forward/Ruck - Livingstone
KPF - Archer, Shanahan
KPD - Bazzo, Jamieson

Plus whatever Barnett is

McGovern has 2, maybe 3, years left if we’re lucky and besides last year hasn’t been exactly durable. Even then he still missed 4 games

Edwards and Bazzo have shown promise but have yet to prove themselves. Jamieson seems to be perma injured and is a long shot to have a career beyond 2025

Not sure Van Es is the answer due to his injury struggles. Clurey could be a one year stop gap but that seems a waste of a list spot

Clancy Dennis or Tom Bell would be very good rookie selections and arguably a better use of our last list spot than Burgiel

Conversation needs to be had with Sheed as he’s not best 22 even if fit and doesn’t have the skillset that our new game style is likely to need. He’s taking the spot of a youngster which would be particularly annoying if he spends most of his time in rehab

Four players - Allan, Shanahan, Gross and Davis

I left Allen off deliberately as whilst he was not expected to be available at our pick he didn’t slide significantly like those others

Most mocks had Allan going with one of Richmond’s two picks before ours and some with him going to Melbourne with the pick before those

Essentially became available because Richmond chose Hotton instead, then we were able to trade back one spot because Port preferred Berry

So it was only a small slide which is why I said 3 rather than 4

How could we have got Reid? We would still have to give up a pick for Baker (R2 in your dream scenario) and would have taken Shanahan at pick 14 (or 17 after academy bids). I think we'd end up in the exact same place.
Tell Richmond it’s F2 or ** off (preferably ** off) then tell Port we’re taking Joe Berry at 12. Do the trade, take Reid and Allan and still get Shanahan.

Sheeds gotta be a good chance at retiring. His time is likely up in the senior team with the new gameplan so trying to get back from surgery to play for the Beagles doesn’t really seem worth it. Still some good options there so I reckon take the extra player and if Burgiel (or whoever) misses out then so be it.

As per the current CBA, we can only have 2 Cat B rookies on the list.

So signing Champion to that list means either Dewar or Livingstone has been upgraded to the Cat A or main list - probably Dewar as he signed a two-year contract extension this year.

Also means we’ll probably pass in the rookie draft to leave a list spot open over preseason.

I do get the sense from hearing him speak and seeing him on social media that Sheed is quite a laid back, relaxed type of character.

Does he have the hunger to push himself back to full fitness and fight to get back into the side? All the while having a dodgy foot that could flare up at any time again and spell 2-3 months on the sidelines.

He hasn’t returned to training yet - will be interesting to see where he’s at on Monday.

At this stage I would not be surprised at all to see him retire. Feel like it would be quite a shock to non Eagles or casual footy fans though.

If

Dewar to main rookie
Champion to Rookie b
Take Dennis with pick 2 today.

Leaves us no list spots.

What if then over the summer and before the Feb 25 SSP deadline, Sheed finishes up?

Would be great but don’t think we can change the Cat A/B list spots this late. If Dom has had enough then Coby is back on.
