Great post as I am also not only concerned about lack of talent in SANFL team but in 2 games I saw their game plan if not awful then the team does not know how to play it , with more intent of getting into spaces or going for tackle than attacking the ball or creating positive attacks.
Yes a lack of talent occurred due to all your points in 1 and we kept players should not have kept.
Porps - L Thompson - McKernan -- Johnston.- Graham. How ordinary have they been.
Plus kids we selected as rookies have not become players we expected apart from Charlie and play like 1 st year rookies, and low selections over last 2 years
Atkins -- Siggins and Knight have shown why they were low draft picks and offered very little .
Looks like Port picked up a lot better extra players that nobody else required .

Bit tough on a couple of players there in Luke Thompson who has been playing good footy in the Snaffle and also did alright last year when he came in for an injured Talia, Atkins is showing enough in the SANFL this year to suggest he's at least a chance and FFS Riley Knight is a first year player...and for that matter young Jake Kelly and Battersby have been good too!! Even Spina has shown glimpses.

I agree. I don't think the rookies and draftees are the issue. In fact I'd have to say that having watched all of the Reserves games, the supposedly experienced players haven't pulled their load. They seem too focused on their own game to bring those younger players into it. Seems to be a major case of lack of leadership. They just don't play as a team.

I assume Otten will travel so Grigg should be available. Looks like the crows have organised an after match get together for members with the Carlton game showing on the big screen after the ressies. Nice work AFC!

Crowds are up by only 40 people per game. Don't think this is the fault of the Crows. Tex's return drew 10000 to the bay. I would imagine this would be a record for a minor round clash.
Ports strength and the dangers this implies is the theme of this report but the bottom placed crows put this one to bed.
I think the real difference between Port and the crows is that Port are a SANFL side supplemented by AFL top ups where as the Crows are an AFL reserves side supplemented by amateurs. Two totally different models.
Our model being unique in AFL due to the constraints applied. This may not be a bad thing as our reserves face hostile crowds each week that may benefit our younger recruits in the long term. Just don't expect too many trophies!

Nah. That has been misproven by posters from both sides.

Sounds as if Port have gelled as a team more, or perhaps quicker, than the Crows reserves and we've had a good run with injuries.
On top of that it doesn't look as if there is a standout side in the SANFL this year.
One thingamajig does not a summer make and a handful of rounds is not long enough to say that a model is or isn't good.

What will happen once a number of very good SANFL players are let go by both Port and the Crows?
Take a few of those away from the Magpies and suddenly everything changes. That could be as soon as this year.

For mine it's got nothing to do with models as sometimes things just are and shouldn't be over analysed.

Yep Port have gone from junk to powerhouse by luck
It could have easily been the Crows.
Three or four years back we would have been struggling to get enough players on the pitch because of our injuries. What will happen if say Renouf and Logan retire, Heath, Stewart and More ask to be traded for better opportunities and we have a couple of injuries? I am sure you could do a similar scenario for the Crows.

It will take more than a year or two to see what sort of impact the AFL teams have on the SANFL. From an AFL perspective both teams need their reserves in one team and the old system put both of our teams at a disadvantage Vs Geelong, Hawthorn and the other AFL teams.

Not too sure if posters alone (myself included) are the final word on this. The facts are there is only 1 SANFL player in our squad (Callinan) where as port have substantially more than this.
How many amateurs do you have playing this week? 6 have been named for the Crows with 1 dropping out to make way for our emergency.
Also I wouldn't think our injury count is currently too high (5) so for us this is par for the course.

I'm not comparing to the Crows, that's not my point. Port are good this year because of the system not because you are Port. Port without this leg up were shit.

Its not our fault per se...... but its obvious people dont want to support a competition that is compromised.

Very surprised channel 7 didn't engage their brain today by televising the crows reserves game today.

It would be a ratting boom.

I'm sure the SANFL would have scheduled the game to start earlier. Fir example, Crows reserves vs south starts at 1 PM and then straight across to the MCG for the crows A's team from 4 PM.

Plus - don't know how many crows supporters would turn up today to watch.

Will just follow via the stats app.

I think you need some of the earlier posts regarding top up players as what you have posted is not quite correct, also this is the first year and it's way too early to know what the best long term arrangements will be.

The Crows are getting clobbered atm but I doubt that has to do with the top up players as you only have so many playing at once. Why your fringe players aren't performing is more the question you need to ask. Not too long ago you had players dominating the SANFL and ours were stuck in SANFL reserves.

We need to be careful that we do not react to something that may not be the norm long term, no different to renegotiating an agreement at AO based on novelty inflated crowd numbers.

Wrt Magpies and Port, yeah it is different now and cannot be compared to last year.

For mine the AFL teams will have great reserves whenever they have a number of players that are "too good for the SANFL" but are unable ro reproduce that form at AFL level, however once they are not longer on tge AFL list they will end up at another SANFL club.
That is the sort of long term effect we need to see before going down the knee jerk reaction path.

Atm Port are going better than expected and the Crows worse than expected and who knows it is quite possible for that to reverse even before the end of the year.

Yep instead we got to see the rabble that is Glenelg FC get pummeled again. I have to wonder if the AFC didnt want our games televised as part of the deal to include us.

Either way people would be annoyed id say. I reckon we need to pump the brakes a bit. Henderson, Lynch, Crouch even LJ and VB makes the SANFL (and AFL) side considerably stronger.

Heath and Renouf got hurt yesterday which will make things a bit more even id say, despite it having diddly squat difference to their AFL side. Not that I wish injuries on anyone.
