I sincerely hope he works out for your club. I'm also glad that Freo didn't pick him up as we have more than enough ruck stocks and he is an unproven KPP.

What would worry me though if I was a Melbourne supporter would be if his heart and soul will ever be in his footy at Melbourne when it is clear he wants to be back in WA. If he is to reach his full potential, he needs to be 100% committed to the club he is playing for. He is not starting on the best foundation for this to be achieved. Still, time will tell.

If I was you I'd worry more about how Freo's history of FUBAR trading has managed to combine with the even more FUBAR trading presence of Lyon to lose a player that nominated you as his club of choice.

With all due respect, your logic is unsound.

Melbourne didn't convince Mitch that is was the better fit for him - it offered him a shitload of cash which no one in their right mind could turn down. Make no mistake, Mitch wanted to play for Freo - how else do you explain the joint press release from Freo on Friday. But the cash - which could set you up for a lifetime - was simply too good to turn down.

And in this lies your problem. You got rid of one "mercenary"; now you have another one. Mitch is a West Australian. All his family are in Perth. You can guarentee that his heart will not be in the job at Melbourne. Every team needs 100% commited players that are loyal to their club. And I doubt you will get this from Mitch Clark.

I'm sorry, but do you actually believe this rubbish Fremantle is trotting out?

They weren't even close to having a trade offer accepted by Brisbane so regardless of the contractual situation Clark wasn't making a decision between Fremantle and Melbourne.

It was a decision between Melbourne and the PSD.

Also, maybe his heart won't be in it at the start of the pre-season... but I can guarantee you when he makes friends with the playing group he will be doing everything he can to play well for his mates, that's the nature of footy.

This could be a masterstroke by Melbourne. As a couple of others have mentioned, Geelong did almost the same thing at the end of 2004 when Ottens had nominated either Sydney or Geelong as his destination. Ottens was heavily criticised in his first couple of years at the Cats when played as a forward, but after overcoming injuries became a pivotal cog in the ruck. Clark has an advantage of not coming to you under any major injury cloud.

Only thing I'm not happy about this deal is how much Schwab was involved, sending Clark text messages and the like. When will he learn to get back in his box! Trade week should all be about Harrington, Neeld and Prendergast.

For anyone with a bit of time on their hands and wanting to see some of Mitch living up to his potential. Watch our game in round 10 against Adelaide, one of his most dominant games he has ever played. Hopefully this trade ends up win/win.

Gazza, your fixation on draft picks borders on the obsessive. There comes a time in the development of a team when you stop looking to top up with 'young talent' at every turn and start aiming higher by filling gaps and targeting needs. We have reached that stage. I know you know this given your comments on Ottens, just thought it needed to be said.

I am ecstatic with getting Clark. He's just what we need and will improve our team no end.
Let's also keep in mind that he's been playing in a disgraceful team the past 2 years, so him not matching his 2009 AA heights since then is quite understandable.

Great to see us flexing some muscle and being aggressive at the trade table.

CaptAIN Jack best post ive seen in 24 hours, ive just paid for my trident this morning after seeing clarky's press conference...hurt the pocket thio...

Very happy with Clark for pick 12, I was worried we were going to offer at least 1 of our compo picks as well. Tim Harrington said today that due to front loading contracts we are still only paying 92.5% of the salary cap next year with Clark included in that.

Personally I'm most excited by the footage of Clark Vs Tarrant, when we played Collingwood this year I couldn't get over how much bigger and stronger Tarrant was compared to our Forward line. We finally have a big bodied FF to make a contest, Can't wait to watch Watts and Jurrah reap the benefits next year.

Also couldn't be happier with how aggressive Melbourne has been in the off-season, first we signed Neeld, Stole Misson from the Saints, Won the bidding war for Craig, Went hard and didn't accept no for an answer when trying to get Clark and then even had a crack at Caddy.

Well Done MFC

If he wasn't convinced Melbourne were the best destination, he woudn't have signed with us. Money is part of it certainly, but we didn't offer him that much more than you did - it might just be the front loaded nature of it that appealed to him.

He has family in Melbourne too, by the way.

Freo spent a good portion of the year talking to Clark, so to pretend Freo fans aren't pissed about the ineptitude of their admin is ludicrous. The deal couldn't be done with Brisbane because of the unprofessional manner in which Freo approached the situation. You deserved what you got in this one. Melbourne acted like professionals, and aggressively chased the player they wanted. You sat on your hands waiting for something to happen, and treated another club like dirt in the process, whilst trying to get the deal done through the media. We just went ahead and signed that player.

You wouldn't be posting rubbish in this thread and carrying on like a tool if you didn't care. You mad brah.

Congrats on getting Clark but the fact remains that he is not a big loss for us. We don't need another ruckman and as a key forward he is erratic and inconsistent. 27 goals is not much of a return. Kepler Bradly kicked almost as many from fewer games. If he was desperately needed by Freo then we would have offered more for him earlier, say pick 16 and a reasonable player.

I don't see how it's unprofessional to want to get the best deal for Freo, especially when based on Clarks comments in regards to homesickness, Freo appeared to hold the best hand. It sounds as if Brisbane wanted us to put our best deal forward to start with and go from there. That's not how it works, and Brisbane suggesting that this would have got the deal done are being disingenuous; we obviously can't and don't know what they would have done but based on their continual insistence that pick 16 on it's own wouldn't suffice is it's more likely that the trading would've have happened in any case and the deal would've gone to Monday either way.

We got gazumped by you when the big dollars were too good to refuse, and contrary to his previous statements, his family in Perth became less of a draw. That's it.

Actually I'm pretty sure the real reason is that he wants to play for a club that's won a premiership ;)

This guy was a docker Friday nite 24 hours later a demon:eek:

This worries me a bit and it's the only reason I voted "unhappy". Im stoked that he is at the club, but for them to pay 600K for him and possibly front end load it, whats not to say he pisses off in 2 years time to go "home" and takes the money that was front end loaded with him. Integrity has to be questioned.

He's on a four year contract. If in four years unless we're not very close to being an elite side, he'll probably hang around.

If he wants to leave in two years, he'd be on a two year contract worth about 200k-300k a year.

Assuming he performs as expected, West Coast or Freo would want to throw an awful lot at us to land a (then) 25 year old, 200cm, 100kg power forward on only 250k per annum.

His value actually goes up after this year, if you think about it.

He will find the going hard without brown in the same forward line
was our go to man this year and kicked under 40 goals
his biggest bag of goals isn't over 4 or 5 so he'll need to work harder

No-one is expecting bags of 7 each week. If he kicks a few each week that's rnough.

What he offers is a tall, strong target that straightens us up and that we can kick long to.

We have other goal kickers in our forward line that will be released now.

Any club that drafts or trades based on the fear of the "go-home factor", may as well fold now.

Look at Adelaide with Tippett. In all likelihood he's going back home next year, but Adelaide have stuck to their guns and refused to trade him a year early. Same goes with GC and Caddy. They had to make a stance, otherwise they'll be seen as an easy target.

Sh#t, who would have predicted that Scummy or Ward would leave their home city to move interstate?

congrats on the Clark pickup, think he'll be invaluable playing forward and pinch hitting in the ruck as needed.

my old man is a dees supporter so looking forward to seeing some of his speccies in the red and blue (as long is its not over the tiges of course :p)

Exactly. You have to back your clubs imminent success and culture to make them want to stick around.

To those unhappy with the contract, this is a quote from Tim Harrington in The Age today:

'We go into next year with a key position player that we have targeted over the last couple of years in Mitch and we go into next year - even with Mitch in our system - still at about 92.5 per cent of the cap, so we have the capacity to pre-pay next year as well, so that holds us in good stead for the future.''

Why am I reading in today's Sun and here to dome extent non Demon fans and some Dee's fans even mention how much this frees up Jamar?

FINALLY some help for Jamar some write...

How did Martin's season go unnoticed and the fact he backed up and stepped up admirably when needed? Jamar for the first time in a few years spent more time on the bench getting a rest rather than rested up forward with Martin being the one resting forward and being a rather decent target despite his kicking. It used to be as soon as Jamar finally got a rest and came to the bench I sighed and looked on for what was always the inevitable goal to the opposition that was kicked as a result.

Clarke is a forward now and i can only see him pinch hitting the ruck in the forward 50 or there abouts and thats it. I would hope anytime we lose either Jamar or Martin to injury we simply bring in a ready Gawn and keep our forward structure to that of what we want.
