first, second & fourth were quality, third was like percy jones coached it..................
Speaking of Percy Jones. not sure if anyone heard the interview on SEN of Phil Maylin. He tells the story of his first game for Carlton, which he was a late sign on for the season and still in Adelaide and would move to Melbourne a few weeks later. Was not even moved from Adelaide when got a late week phone call that Barry Armstrong was out and he would be playing round one v Pies. So flies to Melbourne, at this point not meet any of players or coach, in his first game moments before game he tells one of officials he does not even know what position he is playing that day. as Percy not even told him. This sums up Percy Jones as a coach...

failing to plan, is planning to fail...

I think people are now viewing Cain as a bit of messiah. He is just putting it all together after most of the good work that the club has done with the rebuild. The rebuild is the key. That’s what fans are most excited about.

Dont disagree with that. The rebuild was well and truely needed, hitting the draft was needed, a new coach was needed and then another new coach was needed. A new CEO was needed and since we made a change, off field we have been going really well.

Downplaying of someone’s achievements to make someone else look better is stupid and happens too much.

comments proclaiming that it’s easy to build members and revenue and that anyone could do it , fly in the face of years and years of evidence that it’s not, not just at our club but lots of clubs.

Im sure in years to come Liddle tenure will be littered with mistakes, as will Silvagni, as will the presidents, just like all other presidents, CEOs and list managers.

I haven't seen anything that comes close to resembling that view.
One should be applauded for the good they do and pretend that it's all just a case of being in the right place at the right time.

If anything, it's Russell that many here are lauding, beyond the reality. SOS was the messiah and now it's Russell.....and when Russell goes....etc etc

Messiah may not have been the best way to describe it. All I’m trying to say is I don’t believe Cain could have done what he is doing if we were the old Carlton. The full rebuild brought hope to a lot of fans and they are coming on board.

The full rebuild started with the 2015 draft/trade period.
The membership numbers for the following years weren't anything exceptional but that changed with Liddle.

Our membership growth has surpassed any growth before and it's not as though we've flown up the ladder in that time.
I have demonstrated this previously, so for me....credit where credit is due.

Yes but fans were never going to become convinced overnight. It’s only natural that they see some evidence that the club is heading in the right direction. Liddle is doing a good job too. So it is all coming together but the rebuild was the catalyst.

Anyone that can't see that isn't looking hard enough.

We didn't have any of that evidence in 2018 though. We finished last. :)

We didn't exactly smoke them up last year either and finished third last yet were going to easily smash the 75K mark, barring covid.
It's a big deal when one looks at the facts and not simply a; 'It was always going to happen' It wasn't always going to happen. It was made to happen.

Another thing is that fans want to see membership grow too because they understand it means less dependency on the wealthy board members and hence less interference from them as has happened in the past.

I am bitterly disappointed with the type of fan who can (financially) afford to pay for a membership every year, but refuses to do so, until we come good again (i have a good friend who is in this boat)

Those are the type of 'supporters' who shouldn't have access to GF tickets in my opinion before the long standing stalwart fans who have been 20/30/40 plus year members who buy their season tickets each year and health and circumstances permitting, go to as many Melbourne based games (and interstate of possible) as they can.

I clearly recall seeing the head of the Richmond cheer squad in tears after they won the 2017 Grand Final and from what i read, he has been to every Tigers game (in Victoria and interstate) since 1980.

Putting aside the distaste of him being a RFC fan, that kind of stalwart loyalty and dedication is very impressive.

Wonder if we have any supporter/fan at Carlton with a similar dedication ?

We have thousands and your mate is what I call a follower and not a supporter.
Some people just want to jump on when things are good and distance themselves when they not so good. Followers...
