List Mgmt. The Case Against Chad.

I think the price we would have to pay both directly and indirectly would be far too high and might actually make us go backwards in the medium and long term. But if he helped win a flag then who cares right?

Any AFL team would try to find a way to trade in Chad Warner, the guy is a jet.

Any AFL team would find a way to trade in Kozzy Pickett too.

Chad is out of contract at the end of 2025 but Kozzy is still in contract.

I suspect Melbourne will keep Kozzy on board judging from previous unconfirmed stories of him wanting out but not following through with that plan.

If Warner chooses to come back to WA but doesn't nominate a club then we will struggle to stump up enough assets to trump WC. If he nominates us then we will get it done.

In summary, Chad may be in play in 2025 but WC would definitely hold the upper hand. Kozzy, who knows?

Both are fantastic players and if we could entice either of them to Freo, then get it done.
WC found a way to land Kelly, and it helped plunge them into the deepest crisis in their history.

We've historically reached for a saviour via a trade too often, with little to show for it.

I quite like the questions Raz asks in his post.

Our ledger isn't flattering with star trade ins, and we can't afford to be flippant. The Bolton move was surgical. Warner somewhat blunter.

I don't think we have a midfielder that drives out of congestion with their legs, not a reliable consistent goal kicking one (though young has shown something there)

Still would rather kozzie.

Realistically I think it comes down to what would you prefer, Darcy and Erasmus vs Warner and Reidy.

My opinion is that our list has the capability to do whatever the coach wants. I mean, I'd hate to get to the end of the season and have the coach grumble:

"I don't think we have a midfielder that drives out of congestion with their legs, not a reliable consistent goal kicking one".

We've got Jackson who has rarely played as a midfielder.

We've got Bolton, who does pretty much what you described when attending centre bounces.

We've got two midfielders taken in the first round wanting opportunities.

We've got serious midfield weapons in the arsenal.

He does, but we are paying a very very heavy price (draft picks) taking high profile players that are in contract.
We are at a stage where mature (high class) players are worth more to us than draft picks. We've been drafting strongly for 8 years.

Most players we draft now have to get past at least a B grade AFL player to be B22 now.

Getting established players who fill needs (i.e. are immediately better than someone in the 22) is a better short to medium term strategy for us now.

We basically have to draft rising star winner caliber players for them to improve the team as it stands.

I like that in this draft we took players who have upside but need development time.

And I love that we traded in an A grader who fits a list need.

I'll have The Chad and Kozi if we're fantasizing.

Just not sure we'd have the money. It's not like we're Carlton and have a different cap to fit in all of the trade ins and umps too.

But if it's between Sydney and WC, i guess it's a toss up between bigger dollars and happy gf but say goodbye to success vs a team always in the finals and good money anyways? Who's to say. May depend on whether Cox gets them better this year or worse. Also, history shows that GF hangovers from such poundings are also hard to come back from

O'Driscoll will hopefully start doing that next year. Rotating between wing and onball.

Yes and no.

Two years of first rounders for Jackson, Murphy Reid, potentially 2 years of first rounders for Chad. Down the track that will catch up with us.

Chasing Chad or Kossie isn't going to make a long term difference on its own. Clubs get into trouble doing that (see Kelly) when they have done little to no meaningful drafting in recent history and have an aging list. We fit in neither of those categories at the moment.

As long as we start drafting meaningfully circa 2028 onwards (and hit on top picks) we'll be fine.

Better result is WC trading all their picks for Chad and having 5 years at the bottom that garners just 1 x top 5 pick resulting in a rebuild longer than the Colosseum.
I hate them as much as the next purple person but I don't think they will be as bad as some people think.

Sure they are coming from a long way back but they have traded in a few solid players and drafted pretty well.

The new coach could give them a bounce as well.

They would be able to offer the Chad a lot more than us and him together with the man child would give them a midfield boost.

Having said that I wouldn't be sad if what you suggest happens either 🙂

Agree that Bolton likely could provide run and carry out of the centre but I think he's desperately needed forward.

We've got a great midfield, but it's a little one paced. Outside of youngie does it have class by foot? Caleb has the best hands in the game, Andy is the best 2 way runner in the game. Youngie is the best kick inside 50 in the comp but for 4 weeks in a row where the season was up for grabs the midfield couldn't get it done. I think if we are relatively healthy and don't play in a gf next year we need to ask are we missing something I'm the engine room

Bolton's biog show stats that rate his clearance work from centre bounces as an absolute weapon. We would be insane not to use that.

If it’s between Chad and Kozi…

In terms of list need: A gun crumbing and high pressure small forward is the higher need. It would also free up Bolton for more midfield stints.

In terms of salary: Chad likely to have far higher salary demands (I think it’s been bandied around to be in the order of magnitude of $1.5m v $800k for Kozi). Warner would put immense pressure on the cap, Kozi less so.

In terms of trade capital to make it happen: Both individually likely to be exorbitant. We’d likely need to lose a player or two that we’d rather keep in order to bring in both (someone like a fit and in form Darcy, Cox and/or Sturt).

It’s Kozi for me…

To adapt a Dire Straits lyric: “When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet (Chad)?"
Money for nothing. And your picks for free

Chad Warner reading some of the posts on here basically saying the team that finished 10th last year doesnt need him because we have too many other good players to fit into the team. 😳

It’s not even Christmas yet and we have 3 more months of this to sift through before round 1. 😫
It's called list management.

I mean it'd be great to go get Curnow, Sam Taylor and the Bont to improve our team but it doesn't work like that.

There are some people trying to convince themselves that we don't need him because deep down they know Warner is more likely to end up at the Eagles. However, you can't ignore those who want Pickett over Warner purely for economic reasons. It makes a lot of sense to prioritise Pickett although Warner would look great in purple.

Sure, it's self-preservation. We're dissing the goodlooking chick before she hooks up with the biggest bozo in the joint and we go home with only the knowledge that she has no taste and definitely isn't all that.

But we are also making a pretty solid case for the other, more quiet, person at the bar who won't cost as much to woo, will be way more interesting and has buried more than a few campaigners with outrageous attack on the footy and man.
