WC found a way to land Kelly, and it helped plunge them into the deepest crisis in their history.Any AFL team would try to find a way to trade in Chad Warner, the guy is a jet.
Any AFL team would find a way to trade in Kozzy Pickett too.
Chad is out of contract at the end of 2025 but Kozzy is still in contract.
I suspect Melbourne will keep Kozzy on board judging from previous unconfirmed stories of him wanting out but not following through with that plan.
If Warner chooses to come back to WA but doesn't nominate a club then we will struggle to stump up enough assets to trump WC. If he nominates us then we will get it done.
In summary, Chad may be in play in 2025 but WC would definitely hold the upper hand. Kozzy, who knows?
Both are fantastic players and if we could entice either of them to Freo, then get it done.
I don't think we have a midfielder that drives out of congestion with their legs, not a reliable consistent goal kicking one (though young has shown something there)
Still would rather kozzie.
Realistically I think it comes down to what would you prefer, Darcy and Erasmus vs Warner and Reidy.
It'll come down to Pickett or Warner, and Pickett suits our needs far better.
We are at a stage where mature (high class) players are worth more to us than draft picks. We've been drafting strongly for 8 years. He does, but we are paying a very very heavy price (draft picks) taking high profile players that are in contract.
We can afford to do that now, we've done the drafting and built our core, now is the time to bring in established players. He does, but we are paying a very very heavy price (draft picks) taking high profile players that are in contract.
I like that in this draft we took players who have upside but need development time. Most players we draft now have to get past at least a B grade AFL player to be B22 now.
Getting established players who fill needs (i.e. are immediately better than someone in the 22) is a better short to medium term strategy for us now.
We basically have to draft rising star winner caliber players for them to improve the team as it stands.
Need Cox to work his magic and convince Chad to stay…

Chasing Chad or Kossie isn't going to make a long term difference on its own. Clubs get into trouble doing that (see Kelly) when they have done little to no meaningful drafting in recent history and have an aging list. We fit in neither of those categories at the moment.Yes and no.
Two years of first rounders for Jackson, Murphy Reid, potentially 2 years of first rounders for Chad. Down the track that will catch up with us.
But all those guys are 'first rounders', and two of them are very young.Yes and no.

I hate them as much as the next purple person but I don't think they will be as bad as some people think.Better result is WC trading all their picks for Chad and having 5 years at the bottom that garners just 1 x top 5 pick resulting in a rebuild longer than the Colosseum.
Agree that Bolton likely could provide run and carry out of the centre but I think he's desperately needed forward. My opinion is that our list has the capability to do whatever the coach wants. I mean, I'd hate to get to the end of the season and have the coach grumble:
"I don't think we have a midfielder that drives out of congestion with their legs, not a reliable consistent goal kicking one".
We've got Jackson who has rarely played as a midfielder.
We've got Bolton, who does pretty much what you described when attending centre bounces.
We've got two midfielders taken in the first round wanting opportunities.
We've got serious midfield weapons in the arsenal.
Bolton's biog show stats that rate his clearance work from centre bounces as an absolute weapon. We would be insane not to use that.Agree that Bolton likely could provide run and carry out of the centre but I think he's desperately needed forward.
We've got a great midfield, but it's a little one paced. Outside of youngie does it have class by foot? Caleb has the best hands in the game, Andy is the best 2 way runner in the game. Youngie is the best kick inside 50 in the comp but for 4 weeks in a row where the season was up for grabs the midfield couldn't get it done. I think if we are relatively healthy and don't play in a gf next year we need to ask are we missing something I'm the engine room
This is exactly what I was thinking, NOD has more drive out of stoppage than Ras, so the comparison is:O'Driscoll will hopefully start doing that next year. Rotating between wing and onball.
Money for nothing. And your picks for freeIf it’s between Chad and Kozi…
In terms of list need: A gun crumbing and high pressure small forward is the higher need. It would also free up Bolton for more midfield stints.
In terms of salary: Chad likely to have far higher salary demands (I think it’s been bandied around to be in the order of magnitude of $1.5m v $800k for Kozi). Warner would put immense pressure on the cap, Kozi less so.
In terms of trade capital to make it happen: Both individually likely to be exorbitant. We’d likely need to lose a player or two that we’d rather keep in order to bring in both (someone like a fit and in form Darcy, Cox and/or Sturt).
It’s Kozi for me…
To adapt a Dire Straits lyric: “When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet (Chad)?"
It's called list management.View attachment 2181190
Chad Warner reading some of the posts on here basically saying the team that finished 10th last year doesnt need him because we have too many other good players to fit into the team.
It’s not even Christmas yet and we have 3 more months of this to sift through before round 1.
There are some people trying to convince themselves that we don't need him because deep down they know Warner is more likely to end up at the Eagles. However, you can't ignore those who want Pickett over Warner purely for economic reasons. It makes a lot of sense to prioritise Pickett although Warner would look great in purple.View attachment 2181190
