Security?
Not really. Dutton's Home Affairs minister. It'd be foreign affairs, you'd have thought. Bet Marise Payne's positively thrilled about Dutton stepping on her toes.

Again, you'd have thought that, were there truly an issue, the government would be investigating privately through the appropriate channels, rather than Dutton looking to criticise outside his portfolio on state issues. It's in the fact that the Libs very frequently do this - play politics along the edges of the federal/state divide - that I'm objecting to. Either things like the Bushfires are state issues and Dutton should pull his head in, or Morrison should cop his whack for being on holiday and telling volunteers that they enjoy fighting the bushfires.

as they say “the plague is a great big truth telling mirror staring at you and you see people / politicians for what they really are.” and we see China for what it really is, a coward and a bully, much like a school kid that doesn’t get it’s own way.

Time we diversified...if this pandemic hasn’t taught us that then we’re doomed.

Hopefully it has opened eyes which had been happily shut for far too long.

Problem is a few years on China will return with bags of cash and it will happen again.

ScoMo was told a little while back that Australia better back the US in everything the US says and does in regards to China or the consequences for Australia would be severe. I detest ScoMo, but this is out of his control - we've been sucked into Trump's re-election campaign and this is the result

And what consequences would they be?

It is completely hilarious that everyone is all "Straya has to stand up to China" "we cannot let them bully us" "they cannot interfere with our domestic policy making" yada yada yada.

But the second the USA issues Straya with an ultimatum "that Australia better back the US in everything the US says and does in regards to China or the consequences for Australia would be severe" we are straight under the desk Monica Lewinsky style.

**** off Trump

The US is basically a basket case besides their military strength, manufacturing ability and their sheer population size. How long is this sustainable?

Their technology, their finance market their, their resources, their movie industry , their music industry.......
( but we have mining and farming ).

Apart from that ....What did the Americans ever have going for them.

Any evidence of the US saying that ? Sounds more like Chinese government propaganda aimed at undermining our valid and very diplomatic responses to their horrific actions?

I think you now qualify for a French Passport

The vast majority of countries in the world are vassal and client states of some form or another. Never understood why a term laced with barely disguised bigotry has been able to gain so much traction and acceptance.

Anyway Australia is no different, due mainly to its comparatively small population in the Asian region, but it has the advantage of speaking English and having a population that physically resembles some of the world powers of the day along with historical links to the Anglosphere so it has fared far better than those that do not.

But be under no illusion that Australia is some sort of middle power (laughable) that can push its weight around speaking out of turn about sensitive matters involving big whales like China and expect to suffer no consequences. True Australia is comparatively wealthy to other countries in the world and has a high standard of living but that does not mean that our pollies have the license to mouth off about matters that only genuine big boys can back up.

I'm no fan of China but Australia should be leaving these discussions to the US, Japan, the EU, etc.. and tag along behind them giving our tacit approval to whatever they hash up, not right out in front like deluded fools exposing ourselves to this kind of crap.

I don't know that I agree that we should just placidly support whatever nationstate is bigger/stronger/'right', but I do with the notion that we overestimate our power and importance significantly.

There's an irony that similar people who inform us that we represent less than a percent of world carbon and that we cannot affect change on a global scale are the ones who are picking themselves up for a dusting with China.

Not that I know of.

I would not be surprised one little bit if Scotty from marketing did it all off his own bat.

The point still remains. There is nothing in it for Australia to be so bullish with the USA - Trump is a lunatic. And there is plenty for Australia to lose by being so aggressive towards China.

Australia must balance the respective relationships. Australia is not a major power. We need to stop overreaching.

If Australia is really committed to their position then let's start a conversation about trade restrictions with China. Stop selling them iron ore and stop selling them coal on principal. Show them how committed we really are.

But we are not quite that committed are we?

When push comes to shove all this damage to the Australian economy will ultimately be for nought.

He hates the West and loves taking the moral high ground and wants us to cut our nose off to trade off the economy to make up the moral high ground. Then when we have the moral high ground it's predictably and ironically 'what about the economy', and 'it might (virus) have started in the US. Hes jealoud because austrlia hs thr moral high ground. Guys a fraud and I've noticed there's a few other posters (trolls) like that on here and it's pretty toxic. This crisis has exposed them.

Just a poster who is anti west.

I do believe that China should be held accountable, I just don’t think Australia should be one of the countries out in the front line of the cavalry acting and speaking as if we have any leverage and/or power to intimidate China to allow access into their country in order to do a thorough investigation of the origins of the virus. That responsibility should be left to those that have some bite in their bark and not stupidly financially exposed and vulnerable to China like Australia is. Australia can then come in and support whatever is proposed and agreed upon.

Australia hasn't been aggressive towards China you loon. And China's wild over the top reaction says all you need to know. We'd all be serving Master Chin but for the US. Your rack disciprine!

I don't know what it is if it's that you don't like what you see in the mirror or what but you're consistently anti us Aus at every turn even when we are victims of a pandemic it's still our fault. Maybe there something you dont like seeing in the mirror.

I think he would like us to give up our sovereignty and submit to a bully whilst pointing out that all other countries should stand up to us with grenades when we are a little firmer then we should be in diplomacy. He's actually a troll. Plenty of them.

Joel Fitzgibbon has accused the coalition of demonising China and its communist system.

That will play well next election. When we get to vote. A reminder that China isnt a fan of elections.
