On FC tonight Gary Lyon stated Mumford is ahead a Blake.

Since the mighty Mummy has had zero exposure outside of GFC fans that's a pretty big statement.

Well, if Lyon has said that I guess this counts for nothing...

Shane Mumford has another half a year of senior footy experience under his belt.

He moves well around the ground, and even Thompson has conceded that Mumford looks more "fluent" and "intense" at ground level than Mark Blake.

But Thompson has basically scoffed at suggestions that Mumford could have overtaken Blake for the No. 2 ruck spot by the time Ottens returns.

This suggests that Blake, for the time being at least, is Geelong's #2. In turn this means, right now, Mumford HAS NOT passed Blake in the eyes of the man who counts most - the coach.

Rather than bagging Blake maybe we should just be grateful that Geelong has multiple rucking options behind Ottens in Blake, Mumford and West.

I'm pretty sure there are a few clubs around that would LOVE to have the problem Geelong has in the ruck division.

Did anyone else see that Blake finally made a list in the HUN? Unfortunately for Mark it wasn't a good list. Came in 9th on the 10 Underachievers of 2009(so far). I can just imagine the Blake supporters putting their hands over their ears, closing their eyes, and shaking their heard whispering "no, no, no" over and over.

Re: When "The Pill" returns

I would have to agree. Mummy has grunt and will try his heart out. He did much better today on Sandilands compare to Blake. I say drop Blake and see how he responds in the two's. If he has any heart, it will make him work harder and come back better. If not, stick with Mummy.

Re: When "The Pill" returns

In: Ottens
Out: Blake

Agree..... Mummy seems to offer alot more around the ground.....and really throws in the body

Exactly, actually jumped at Sandilands at the centre bounces as well, it shocks me that Blake hasn't yet thought of this idea. Just tries to out position someone who is four inches taller and 30 kg heavier than him

Mark Blake

Where are we at with the devolpment of this bloke?

When Otto comes back is there any chance that Mummy will be the number 2 rucking role because Blake isn't up to it.

Week in week out he continually gets manhandled by the opposition ruckmen and i don't think we're going anywhere with him.

Bag me if you like but he's no good, if he was he'd have a premiership medallion.

Re: When "The Pill" returns

I agree too. Mumford is like a younger version of Ottens IMO. Does a lot more around the ground, and you often see him on the deck trying to get a hard ball seconds after going up for a hitout. Can't remember Blake doing anything like that.

Re: When "The Pill" returns

I seriously thought that for the first time tonight. I was impressed with Mumford and thought he should have been given more time in the middle than he was. But in all honesty I don't think it will happen. But Sandilands is the best ruckman there is at the moment and noone would expect Blake or Mumford to beat him. But you blokes are very fickle I have to say that. Hard to please that is for sure.

Re: When "The Pill" returns

He may still be young and may get better but what he lacks is grunt

I have great reservations that he will develop this part of his game as it is not in his nature.

Ottens will come back and spend most of his time on the bench or in the forward line as he is underdone. Mummy is still behind Blake and will not be able to carry the load for the game time required however Mummy is a much better long term proposition. I hope we do not keep him on the basis f the King issue

Re: Mark Blake

At the moment Blake is a good back up ruckman who is being forced to play as a first string ruckman because Ottens is injured.

He does not have the streangth to fight with the bigger ruckmen but he is a good tap ruckman in his own right.

If Ottens were out there he would not be as exposed to the oppositions better ruckmen.

Sanderlans and Cox are some of the better ones in the game. Blake can hold his own against most others but these tow have to much height/ body mass for him to handle. He is not the crash and bash type but more of a placement ruckman.

Mumford is getting to go up against the oppositions second sting ruckman each week while blake has to deal with the best.

I've always held the opinion that it was a HUGE mistake getting rid of Steven D'King instead of Mark Blake. I personally think he's a little pea-hearted and that his performances could prove costly in our quest for premierships. Before you shoot me down for saying "ohh dont be so negative, support the bloke...yadda yadda yadda" I want the best team possible on the park, and i think its becoming more obvious with every game Mumford plays that he offers more than Blake.

I saw Mumford up against Sandilands a bit today and thought he showed A LOT more than Blake. Why do we need to have a specialist "back-up tap ruckman" when we can have someone (Mumford) who is better?

Re: Mark Blake

Mumford is not a better tap ruckman than Blake mate. Get your blake hating blinkers off

I didnt say that i just said hes better, the role of the ruckman is no longer just a plain old "tap ruckman", in all other areas Blake is poor, highlighted by the fact the crowd always laughs whenever he goes to kick the ball

I would classify Mumford as a bash and crash type ruckman. He had the body mass behind him to at least stand up to Sanderlans alot easier than Blake can.

Re: Mark Blake

After watching Mark Blake's performance against Sandilands, I am prepared to trade Mark Blake and Ryan Gamble.

To put it bluntly, we will never win a flag with Mark Blake as the 2nd ruckman.

I would be prepared to trade Mark Blake in a 3 way deal to get Matthew Maguire. We need a Centre Half Back who can hold the fort and set up attacking moves from Half Back.

Re: Mark Blake

I've opened up on Blake on another thread.

He was shown up today, to why we didn't pick him for the 07 flag. Tactically is poor in contests against a better opponent. He doen't have a plan B, therefore just gets thrown around like a rag doll.

Ottens and Mummy change their plans. Otto against the pies just threw they young guys around, yet against Sandilands he jumps into him. Mummy does the same, a bash and crash type of ruckman which suited today.

Blake needs to step up.
