Nope, 36k~ is the limit for AFL games these days at the Gabba. Kardinia Park is supposed to be hitting 40k next season.
What a short sighted project.
Millions of taxpayers dollars wasted to get the capacity to 40k.

All they needed to do was increase the capacity to 45k and there would have been no reason to the AFL to deny them home finals played at that stadium.

A missed opportunity.

Looking forward to heading down to Pencil Park next year for a change.
We have a great record there winning 9 of our last 13 games including the infamous 1987 round 22 clash with an 8 goal last quarter and Dunstall kicking his 200th goal with a minute to go to get us home by 3 points - knocking the Cats out of the finals and letting the Demons in for the first time in 23 years.

Let's hope they let more than a dozen opposition supporters in.

Are you upset that Gold Coast get to play their home games at Metricon too?

Shouldn't they be forced to play their home games at a larger stadium in the capital city of Queensland?
No. The game doesn't need growing in geelong.

Also 20k < 50k

If Richmond and Hawthorn are being sent down there, Collingwood & Carlton should too.

It’s actually a joke the Pies haven’t had to play us at our actual home ground since 1999, but that’s the AFL for you.
I dont mind playing there on occasion. But agree, if we play there so should others.

That's the next stage.

Stage 1 (New Reg Hickey Stand) built in 2006 was done on the cheap to get the ball rolling and made it possible to do all the other redevelopments.

Now that the rest of the stadium has been complete, rebuilding the RH stand is next on the list. It's the stand you see on the TV and is pushed right up against the road. Has very limited capacity considering it's on the wing. Lots of space wasted by the ramps too.

Like the GABBA and other stadiums, would require building the stand over Moorabool St but would boost capacity of the stadium easily past 45k

For context: Won't happen for 10-20 years.

Thanks for the insight.
You’d think that in 20 years time with population growth you’d be hoping to future proof the next build with a capacity of 50k.

Hopefully those making the decisions to invest next time have the foresight to look ahead.

Had Carlton not won as many flags, well 16 of them, would they still be playing games at the MCG?

If Carltons fan base was as big as North Melbournes, would Carlton be playing home games in Princes Park or Tassie? A good chance they would.

I assure you Carlton would love to play 2 or 3 or even 4 games a year at Princes Park or Optus Oval or IKON park, especially if the seating capacity is 30-35,000 and its a cheap rent deal like kardinia park

Can you give another example in world sport where a team is not allowed to play their home games in their own city?

If you can, you're a better man than me.
49ers don't play in San Francisco. Rams and Chargers don't play in LA. The New York teams don't even play in their own state.

Five examples in 10 seconds.

I'm assuming that these decisions were made by the clubs themselves (for financial or other reasons), and that they did not come about because The NFL told these teams that they can't/don't have the right to play in their own cities. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Logic school? If you pay $50 for a car and your parents pay the rest, you didn't really pay for the car did you?
Yes logic....You complain that a team in a National competition who receive funding from a state government (that no one has denied?) while also taking on costs is wrong but then also ignore that your own team is receiving state funding for a pissy little training ground that's used for training only in the men's competition then i don't know what to tell you dude?

You can't see the hypocrisy? At least Kardinia is a state of the art facility that hosts multiple sports, concerts, events etc.

Midget clubs like Geelong will suffer significantly if they do not get to play home games to clubs like Collingwood. This is why they request it year after year. If they play every game at GMHBA, they will start whinging come finals time that they don't get enough exposure at the G
80k+ members is consider midget folks....

We'll gladly take Finals at Kardinia, don't care about MCG exposure.

Every club gets government funding *******. Only one gets to have a 50,000 capacity stadium for no reason other than for Geelong's hga.

Yeah I really enjoyed watching Sri Lanka vs Namibia play in front of 200 people. Nice international sporting event bro.
I think you’ll find Australia wide there’s massive investment outside of capital cities to promote a better spread of population.
The congestion in Melbourne is depressing as is.
Large investment in Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat are a must.
Sounds like your one of the tiggy supporters that won’t go to Docklands because it’s to far away
