makes such a difference to our forward structure, even if not kicking goals he is keeping a good defender busy
Absolutely. Dont care if tabs gets double teamed.

If it opens up for a Schulz or a Switkowski or Walters to kick 3-4 goals then that's fine.

Genuine elite AFL tall forward

and no, 1 or 2 brainfades every couple of weeks doesn't push him down a tier, this bloke is elite, he has worked hard for years to get there and has done it all in a team that has been borderline garbage.
I tell ya what, I pumped him up and he put in a career worst performance tonight lol

I'm still backing my statement though

He straightens us up and and always takes a good defender. He needs more help from Lobb.
Felt Darcy going down really affected Tabs tonight. Lobb and Tabs can form a partnership but Darcy is deadset liability with his knocks and bumps every week. Time to play Meek Darcy Tabs and Lobb. Tabs will get more one on one and allow the smalls to get free too

Darcy went down? He played the whole game. Or do you mean that Tabs was poor because Darcy was poor because that is an interesting train of thought…

Darcy was on the bench for long periods. Or rested up forward. Forced Lobb to play longer period in the ruck.
Darcy wasn’t 100% tonight. Was lumbersome and slower

Darcy definitely wasn’t 100% but he was on ground for 84% which I’d imagine is in line with his average. I imagine he was always going to need a week or two to build into it given the interrupted pre-season and such.

Tabs was just beaten by Keefe, no two ways about it. I expect him and Darcy will put on a clinic against Essendon next week to be honest

Keefe always seem to have his measure. Just a poor night all round from the talls. Lobb was meh, Darcy poor.

Some stats for Taberner that may surprise many here (well they certainly surprised me);

Since 2019 (so ignoring his first 60 games from his first 6 seasons 2013-2018), he has played 43 games (out of a possible 65 Freo games).
He has kicked at least 1 goal in 40 of those games.
In 1 of those 3 in which he did not kick at least one goal, he was subbed out injured after only playing 26% Time On Ground (2021 R15).
Tabs has kicked 83 goals in those 43 games.
In those 43 games played, he has averaged 1.93 goals per game (that includes 2 games in which he was subbed out and played <60% Time on Ground ... if you exclude those 2 games, he has averaged exactly 2 goals per game since 2019).
In those 43 games, Freo kicked 470 goals. So Tabs kicked 17.66% (83/470) of those total goals kicked.
And 89 Contested Marks at 2.07 CMs/game.

Now if we put that in perspective and compare it to the premier AFL goal kicker for the years 2019-current, Tom Hawkins;
  • played 74 games (out of a possible 75 games, includes finals)
  • 8 times Hawkins has not kicked a goal in those 74 games.
  • kicked 180 goals in those 74 games.
  • never been subbed out and always played 85%+ Time On Ground.
  • averaged 2.43 goals per game.
  • Geelong kicked 883 goals. Hawkins kicked 20.38% (180/883) of those total goals kicked.
  • 116 Contested Marks at 1.57 CMs/game.

Hawkins has far greater goal assists and Tabs has better inside 50's which is understandable given Hawkins is more of a deep forward than Tabs.

He's been a top 10 key forward over the last 2 years. This is spot on.

I think he just had a bad night, just one of those days. Every player has them.

Yes, it was frustrating but I back him to find some form.
I wrote on a recent thread. On a good day we love tabs to have 15-20 disposals and kick 2-4 goals.

Some will think its a bad thing if tabs is held to 0 goals and 10 disposals.

I can accept tabs being held goalless and have 10 disposals if he is double teamed or triple teamed and a small like a Walters or Schulz or Switkowski etc is allowed to be free and kick 3-4 goals.

And now the week after he has put in a career best performance!

That was the one thing missing that people could discount on him being "elite" a big bag of goals, boom has done it now

Love the big Kebab

Such is Tabs.
After a horrendous week and people questioning his role at the club, comes out and does a ‘quiet’ 7 goal performance. Epic.
Total tally for the season is 11. Only 5 goals off Daniher with 16. Had two weeks off.
i will blatantly steal that saying. 'such is tabs', lol, thats gold.
