Analysis The Matt Taberner effect

Always been a supporter of Taberner, just check my history in here and elsewhere - but if we're losing Lobb and Walters is cooked, it's time to bundle up Taberner with them and move past all three for the future of our forward line. Taberner is garbage up the field and is a liability through his availability anyways.

Treacy + Amiss from Round 1 next year. Fyfe, Darcy, Jackson, Logue can all be the other talls / support.
Treacy and Amiss? You’re joking. This squad should be playing finals and top 4 next year.
Tabs is playing with one leg out of structural.
Where the **** was Lobb tonight? The forward line of the last month have been garbage. Sydney, Richmond and now Melbourne. It’s the smalls more then Lobb and stabs

Taberner just isn't that guy folks.

Do we seriously think this guy is anywhere close to the other number 1 key forwards in the game? If you were to rank every key forward in the AFL right now, where would you rank Tabs? Wouldn't be very high on my list.

Also, doesn't help that he's very injury prone, like every single year this guy is injured. We should've found a replacement for him years ago, what have we been doing.

Now we have to sit and wait and hope that Amiss and Treacy turn out good and push this guy out of the team.

He never should had to be.
A Rookie listed forward that’s a punt in the dark is the display of the list management that have caused years of frustration.
Amiss is the first top 10 pick since probably Pavlich in 99. That’s pathetic

Tabs was never meant to be the top forward. But rather a second tall complimenting say a Pavlich/Naughton. But that’s Fremantle for you

Lol at people coming out of the woodworks to pot Taberner once again

It was a greasy game, only one tall forward kicked a goal all game and it was Weideman who had 1 touch for 1 goal the entire game

People coming after Taberner are so far off the mark that its hilarious
Injury prone and overrated, I put the blame on list management more then anything to be honest.

Fair to pot him I reckon, he's been asking for it for weeks now.

bit rich to pot him in a game where Melbourne decided to run with only 1 key forward and he literally had 1 touch

1 touch the whole night, I'm not lying

That’s the exact key.
Our small/medium are dogshit. Melbourne can have McDonald for all they care. Yet their smalls are elite.
Fremantle’s aren’t

Tabs and Lobb weren’t either of the reasons we lost tonight. Our forward 50 entries were mostly garbage and again - other than the last quarter and a fraction of the third - we were horrible at keeping in there
Yes and no, our mids have no confidence in our forwards and hesitate accordingly

Taberner aint the problem though

our smalls are too hot and cold I agree

Schulz hasn't shown up for a full game all year, pops in for a half every now and again
Freddy shows up every 2nd or 3rd game
Colyer has fallen off after trying to play wing
Banfield has a cameo each game but not much else
Switta is our most consistent but is always injured

Graham Polak

But broadly yes.

Anyway Tabs clearly a) playing injured (?permanently so now), b) not a world beater and c) wrong side of the age curve.

Treacy must get games now.

It’s not any 1 forwards fault, our structure is incomplete without a mobile 3rd option & the regression in fast ball movement through the middle of the ground. Taberner has a role to play, but we are too predictable to defend with only 2 marking targets.

Random fact. That 2003 season Freo made finals.

That 2003 draft.

Ryan Murphy was pick 12. Looked like a promising kpf to help Pav. Kicked 3 goals in that 2006 semi final vs the demons, then we traded for Chris Tarrant.

Mundy was pick 19. Enough said.

Michael Johnson was a preseason draft pick and lasted until 2018.

Tabs is no champion forward , But has been serviceable over the years , At the moment he is hopelessly out of form and needs to go back to Peel. Twice he was passed by the defender on a lead yes passed!!! he started in front and finished behind at the ball drop . There was nothing wrong with the kick coming in it favoured the player in front which was Tabs when the ball was kicked and the defender by the time it landed.

I agree with those picks, what was getting at is the fact the priority to draft forwards later in the draft rather then first up. It’s well known that KPF/talls always have the better potential hence going early. Fremantle never had that. Hawthorn took Buddy and Roughead rather then Tambling or Griffen.
Can draft incredible midfield and defence, but Fremantle just never seem to prioritise talls

Trouble is the forward line itself is out of form.
Schulz needs a spell, so does Colyer. Can’t change it drastically then there will be no cohesion. Perhaps Colyer out for Sturt/Crowden, then Schulz state until Switta is fit. That could be poor timing for finals.

Well freo still has a 1st rounder in this draft. Likely to be pic 11-14.

Will Freo grab the best kpf?

Didn't look that great last week either and it was dry.
